The San Diego Wave will play their third game in the 2024 NWSL regular season this Saturday, April 13, against Racing Louisville at Lynn Family Stadium. The Wave have played two home games this season and have come away with a 2-1 loss against Kansas City Current and a historic 1-0 win against Seattle reign.
Both initial games have been filled with excitement and drama, as this last game against Seattle was decided by a 98th minute goal by Emily van Egmond. The win was a historic one for San Diego, as it was their first-ever victory against the Reign franchise, who have always found a way to be a burden for Casey Stoney’s side.
San Diego Wave has had a very different look this season with the additions of Savannah McCaskill and Hanna Lundkvist, along with other alternate options by Elyse Bennett and Kaitlyn Torpey. Casey Stoney has been aggressive offensively, and this Wave team has been producing many scoring opportunities. Finishing has been inconsistent in the final third, which led to that home-opener loss against Kansas City Current at Snapdragon Stadium.
Alex Morgan has had a very nice start to the new season with a goal in the NWSL Challenge Cup title game and an assist to van Egmond’s goal against Seattle. Morgan was also unjustly taken away a goal after an officiating decision in that same game against Seattle Reign.
Jaedyn Shaw has had a very slow start to the season, but she played very well in the recent SheBelieves Cup against Japan and Canada, with a goal and an assist. Shaw was not at 100 percent when the season began after participating in the W Gold Cup with the USWNT, but she is always a player that can provide heavy offensive support at her best.
Racing Louisville is winless with three draws to begin the 2024 NWSL season and will be highly motivated to try and get that elusive first win of the year. Uchenna Kanu is by far Louisville’s best player currently with three goals scored in the team’s first three games. A familiar face for Casey Stoney and the Wave, Taylor Flint (formerly Taylor Kornieck) is also a key player to watch with her commanding physical presence in the midfield.
The Wave are the favorites in this match, but it is set to be a very hard-fought road game at Lynn Family Stadium.
