After a needed win against the Washington Spirit, San Diego Wave FC continues its East Coast escapades in New Jersey.

SAN DIEGO — The Wave entered its game against the NWSL-leading Gotham FC trailing by eight points. Needless to say, coming out with a win would be a supreme boost going into the latter half of the season.

While Lia Godfrey mustered through her fourth game-winner of her career, the offense has remained a point of improvement for the club. Head Coach Jonas Eidevall elected to give Trinity Byars the start up front, leaving  Ludmila as a substitute.

What needed to remain a constant from the Spirit game was stellar defense. While Gotham doesn’t have Trinity Rodman to deal with, their attack is balanced and has been a major problem for even the top defenses in the league.

First Half

Gotham’s Guro Reiten threatened early, ripping a shot off the post. The one-timer attempt had a decent lane to the back of the net, but San Diego held.

In the 25th minute, Mimi Van Zanten found Melanie Barcenas in transition, who fed Byars an open shot on goal. The shot didn’t get much lift and was handled by Ann-Katrin Berger.

The pressure would keep mounting on the Wave, and Gotham’s Jaedyn Shaw would get the scoring started just before the end of the half. She produced a curling right-footer that stretched just out of Sandra Paños’s reach.

Some good news for the Wave is that Kenza Dali subbed on earlier in the match. She is likely to be back in the starting lineup and has been working up her minutes after missing a match with a lower-leg injury.

Byars would get an opportunity to equalize in the final minute of stoppage time, but couldn’t convert.

Second Half

Unfortunately for the Wave, it was an uneventful second half. Adrianna Leon, also working up more minutes, came on in the 66th minute for Melanie Barcenas. Bringing in the vet to shake things up on offense was the goal, but it was fruitless.

San Diego wouldn’t generate a look at the goal until the final 10 minutes. Van Zanten and Leon both put up shots, which would be the last of the match for the Wave.

Conceding three points to Gotham FC puts SD 11 points behind the league lead. 11 matches remain in the regular season, and the Wave currently sits in fourth place.

Denver Summit FC is coming to Snapdragon on August 14, giving Eidevall’s side a week to recover and prepare.

The return of Catarina Macario and the debut of Laila Harbert may be the catalysts needed for the club, but both timelines remain in limbo.
