Padres minor league affiliates went 2-0 on Thursday.

Here is our daily recap of games played.

Roster Roundup

  • The El Paso Chihuahuas made a quick flurry of roster moves before their game against Albuquerque: Left-hander Wes Benjamin was placed on the development list, and Bryan Hoeing was placed on the 7-day injured list on September 9. To fill in the roster spots, a trio of arms was called up. Right-handers Clay Edmondson, Maikel Miralles, and Kleiber Olmedo were assigned to Triple-A to reinforce the bullpen after Wednesday’s game saw four relievers and a position player used in relief.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 4-2 vs Albuquerque) (75-65 on the season)

Luis Campusano – 2-for-4, Home Run, Double, Two RBI

Yonathan Perlaza – 1-for-4, RBI Double

Victor Lizarraga – 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 5 K (86 pitches – 50 strikes)

Right-hander Victor Lizarraga twirled five innings of one-run baseball in his Triple-A debut. Lizarraga flashed a strong six-pitch mix in his debut, striking out five batters while walking three. His arsenal yielded a 23.5% whiff rate in his five frames, with the only run scoring against him coming on an RBI single by Sam Hilliard. Lizarraga generated four outs via the ground ball, with one resulting in a double play. While the traditional stuff+ models may not be as bullish on Lizarraga’s stuff, he found ways to keep the ball in the park despite allowing seven hard-hit balls. Omar Cruz pitched two innings in relief, with the only blemish on his line being a solo homer by another former big leaguer in Keston Hiura. Bradgley Rodriguez looks to be all the way back, as the right-hander fired off a scoreless eighth inning, averaging 99 mph on his sinker. Sean Reynolds generated three groundouts in the ninth to seal his fifth save of the season and a Chihuahuas win.

If Don Quixote is the Man of La Mancha, then Luis Campusano is the Man of El Paso. Campusano launched his 25th homer of the season in the first inning, tying the ball game at one run apiece. The Chihuahuas’ offense would pull away in the third inning, as Tim Locastro led off the inning with a single. Yonathan Perlaza’s 47th double of the season scored Locastro, giving El Paso a 2-0 lead. Clay Dungan tripled to score Perlaza, and Dungan scored on a double by Campusano. Campusano is now up to 50 (yes, 50) extra-base hits on the season, a career-high. Nate Mondou had two hits in four at-bats, and the Chihuahuas went 2-for-6 (.333) with runners in scoring position in the win.

San Antonio Missions (Won 5-1 vs Springfield) (65-69 on the season)

Braedon Karpathios – 1-for-4, Two-RBI Single

Albert Fabian – 2-for-5, Two-RBI Double

Luis Gutierrez – 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K (69 pitches – 43 strikes)

San Antonio picked up a second straight win over the playoff-bound Cardinals, winning 5-1 on Thursday. Starting pitcher Luis Gutierrez, in his Missions debut, struck out four batters in five efficient innings of work. Gutierrez started incredibly well, facing the minimum through the first four innings. Gutierrez recorded the first two outs of the fifth inning, but two singles and a walk loaded the bases with two outs. However, on his 26th pitch of the inning, Gutierrez induced a groundout from Miguel Ugueto to end the threat. Johan Moreno made his Missions debut in relief, tossing 1.2 innings of one-run baseball with his first Double-A strikeout. Jose Geraldo closed out the seventh and threw a scoreless eighth inning. He returned for the ninth but walked the first two batters. The Missions called on Harry Gustin to close out the game, and Gustin delivered, recording a strikeout, forceout, and groundout to earn the save and seal a Missions win.

Braedon Karpathios opened the scoring from the get-go, as with the bases loaded and one out, he singled to center field to score the first two runs of the ball game. Karpathios’ base hit was one of two the Missions recorded with runners in scoring position. San Antonio’s patient approach at the plate was successful, as the Missions drew eight walks in the win. Damon Dues drew three walks and scored a run, also contributing on defense with an outfield assist. Romeo Sanabria and Anthony Vilar drew two walks each, and Wyatt Hoffman finished with two singles and a run scored. San Antonio led 2-0 through the seventh, when Albert Fabian pushed in two more with a two-run double. An eighth-inning walk & wild pitch combo with Ryan Jackson on the plate scored the fifth and final run for the Missions.
