The San Diego Padres traveled to New York to take on the Yankees in game three of their three-game series.

Coming into the game, the series was split at one apiece. Dylan Cease took the mound for the Friars, and Max Fried pitched for New York.

This game was a pitching duel early.

We saw a masterclass performance from both starters in this game. Cease pitched 6.2 innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out nine. Max Fried pitched seven innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out eight.

Jackson Merrill opened up the scoring with a solo blast to right center in the top of the fourth inning. It was Merrill’s fourth home run of the year and his first since coming off the injured list.

Dylan Cease had his no-hitter broken up in the seventh inning after Cody Bellinger hit a solo homer to tie the game.

It was by far Cease’s best outing of the year, and he ended up exiting the start early with some sort of injury to his throwing arm/hand.

He was still able to throw 89 total pitches in the outing.

I'd like this amount to

Jackson Merrill struck again with a single in the bottom of the eighth inning, bringing home Fernando Tatis Jr. to regain the lead. Immediately following Merrill’s at-bat, Xander Bogaerts added to the lead, bringing home Manny Machado on a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom half of that same inning, former Padre Trent Grisham hit a two-run shot to tie the game off of Padres pitcher Jason Adam. It was Grisham’s second home run of the series as he came back to haunt his former team.

The game went to extra innings, and the Yankees walked it off. J.C. Escarra hit a sacrifice fly to win the game and take the series. The Padres’ bullpen was finally hit hard in this series, which has not been the case all year.

Mike Shildt spoke on Cease’s injury postgame “Just now getting feedback on it, training staff isn’t overly concerned, it’s a little bit of cramps, he’ll be evaluated, you know he wanted to keep pitching, so let’s just start by saying he threw the ball fantastic today,” Cease said.

The Padres are set to travel to Colorado to round out their road trip.

The first game of their three-game series is set for May 9, as San Diego has the travel day after this New York series.

The first pitch is set for 5:40 p.m. Pacific time on Friday, and the pitchers have yet to be announced.
