Five fingers are on each of our hands, one for every win the Padres’ minor league affiliates had on Tuesday. That’s right: Padres minor league teams went 5-0 on Tuesday.

Here is a recap of the day’s events.

Roster Roundup

The Padres organization saw some players move around the system, so here is a brief roundup of the moves:

El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 9-7 vs Round Rock) (16-18 on the season)

Eguy Rosario – 2-for-4, Home Run

Jake Cronenworth – 1-for-2, Home Run, Two RBI, Three Walks

Wes Benjamin – 4.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 3 BB, 2 K (79 pitches – 42 strikes)

Eguy Rosario became the Chihuahuas’ all-time home run leader, as his second-inning home run gave him a franchise-record 49 home runs, breaking Cody Decker’s franchise record. Rosario was just one of the team’s star performers at the plate, and a fellow infielder took a share of the spotlight. Jake Cronenworth, on rehab assignment in his first career game with El Paso, slugged a two-run home run of his own, while also drawing three walks. Cronenworth drove in two runs and scored three in the game, looking back to full strength. Connor Joe and Nate Mondou both had RBI base hits, with Joe’s being a double. Catcher Cody Roberts reached base on three base hits, and Yonathan Perlaza gave El Paso the lead in the sixth inning on a two-RBI double.

While starter Wes Benjamin was rocked for six runs in 4.2 innings of work, the Chihuahuas’ bullpen had a very strong performance, tossing 4.1 innings of one-run baseball. Kevin Kopps was the first to enter the game, and would ultimately earn the win after 1.1 innings of one-run ball. Right-hander David Morgan made his El Paso debut and flashed impressive stuff despite the pitching environment, getting whiffs on 44% of swings while hitting 98.1 mph on the fastball. The Stuff+ grades on Morgan’s pure stuff is enough to make the nerds salivate, as seen in the graphic below.

Harold Chirino and Reiss Knehr combined for the eighth and ninth innings, with Chirino escaping a runners-on-the-corners, two-out jam with a timely strikeout of Sam Haggerty. Knehr, meanwhile, struck out three in the ninth inning, reaching 95 mph on the fastball with an 100% whiff rate against the four-seamer.

El Paso returns to play Wednesday, with Omar Cruz set to make the start.

San Antonio Missions (Won 9-2 vs Frisco) (15-13 on the season)

Romeo Sanabria – 1-for-4, Two RBI

Moises Gomez – 3-for-5, Double, Two RBI

Braden Nett – 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R (1 ER), 1 BB, 7 K (80 pitches – 52 strikes)

Right-hander Braden Nett bounced back with one of his better starts of the young season. Nett looked sharp from the get-go, striking out seven Roughriders over 5.1 innings of work. Five of the seven strikeouts by Nett came on swings, and Nett was able to keep the baseball on the ground for six of eight outs recorded on balls in play.  Despite a 5.04 ERA in his 25 innings of work this season, Nett currently has a 2.73 FIP, indicating he is pitching significantly better than his cumulative season stats show. Jake Higginbotham pitched a scoreless 1.2 innings of work, not allowing an inherited runner to score, while Eduarniel Nunez closed out the win with two scoreless frames.

The Missions’ offense put up a three-spot in the third, going on to score nine runs in the ballgame. Moises Gomez and Devin Ortiz each finished with a three-hit performance. Gomez drove in two runs on two run-scoring hits, a single in the third and a double in the sixth innings. Ortiz scored one run in the game, while Romeo Sanabria had a sacrifice fly and an RBI single in the game. Francisco Acuna was 1-for-3 out of the number nine spot, and Brandon Valenzuela scored two runs.

San Antonio returns to play Wednesday, with right-hander Enmanuel Pinales set to make his Double-A debut.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 14-9 vs South Bend) (16-12 on the season)

Leo De Vries – 1-for-5, Two-RBI Single

Jack Costello – 3-for-4, Double, Three RBI

Ian Koenig – 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K (76 pitches – 46 strikes)

You know it’s a good sign when the leadoff hitter scores two runs in the first inning. Leo De Vries accomplished that feat on Tuesday, reaching base twice in the first inning, scoring two and driving in two. The TinCaps scored nine runs in the first inning, with Sean Barnett, Nerwilian Cedeno, and Rosman Verdugo each driving in two runs in the inning alongside De Vries. Jack Costello had a big day at the plate after a sluggish April, hitting a double and two singles while driving in three. Nerwilian Cedeno and Sean Barnett drove in three runs each, while Braedon Karpathios reached base four times and scored three runs. Brendan Durfee was the lone member of the starting lineup to be hitless, but he still reached base twice.

On the mound, Ian Koenig pitched five tenacious innings, striking out a season-high six batters. The San Jose native bounced back from seven earned runs in 2,2 innings over his last two starts to allow two runs on four hits in five innings of work. Koenig had a rocky first inning, partly due to the long wait after a nine-run first inning, but he was able to reel in his control to finish five innings for the first time this season. Luis German allowed three runs on two hits and a walk, bringing the game to a 13-5 score, but Eiker Huizi left the jam without allowing any further runs, tossing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Nick Wissman allowed four runs in an inning of mop-up duty, getting two of three outs on the ground.

Fort Wayne returns to play on Wednesday, with Clark Candiotti taking the mound.

I'd like this amount to

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 4-3 vs San Jose) (12-16 on the season)

Zach Evans – 3-for-4, Go-Ahead RBI Single

Kasen Wells – 2-for-5, Two-RBI Double

Kash Mayfield – 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 7 K (80 pitches – 56 strikes)

Left-hander Kash Mayfield continues to get whiffs in the California League, as he punched out seven batters in five innings of work. Mayfield has pitched better than his metrics suggest, as the left-hander has posted a 3.11 FIP (vs a 5.04 ERA) in his first five professional starts, and despite his areas of growth being evident, Mayfield has turned in a strong start. Not every prospect hits the ground running, and Mayfield is making strides towards dominance. Right-hander Will Varmette earned the win while pitching the final four innings of the game, getting four of nine outs on the ground.

Kasen Wells got the Storm’s scoring started on a two-run double in the fifth inning, driving in his eighth and ninth runs of the season. Wells has been the leadoff man who makes the Storm offense click; after all, a .415 OBP tends to do that. Ryan Jackson had one hit on the night, but it was a crucial one, as in the eighth inning and while being down 3-2, Jackson doubled to score Lamar King Jr. With Jackson at third and with two outs, Zach Evans turned on an inside pitch and lined it to left field, scoring the go-ahead run with two strikes and two outs. Evans continues to be a fixture in the Storm lineup, and his three-hit game on Tuesday helped fuel the win.

Lake Elsinore returns to play in San Jose on Wednesday. No starter has been announced.

ACL Padres (Won 3-0 vs ACL Rangers) (1-2 on the season)

Luis De Leon – 2-for-4, RBI Single

Kale Fountain – 2-for-4, RBI Double

Abraham Parra – 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

Humberto Cruz made his season debut for the ACL Padres, serving as an opener. Cruz struck out two of three batters faced, a nice preview into what he possesses. Right-hander Abraham Parra tossed five innings as the bulk reliever, punching out four. After posting a 9.59 ERA last season in the ACL, the right-handed Parra looks to perform much stronger now that he knows the environment.

Kale Fountain had his next big hit, a run-scoring double in the first inning. Fountain, serving as the DH, has a .571 average in his first three games. Victor Figueroa had two singles, while Emil Turbi doubled and scored a run. Luis De Leon had two hits out of the leadoff spot, scoring once and driving in one. Yoiber Ocopio, one of last year’s DSL breakouts, had his first continental base hit with an RBI single in the first inning. Shortstop Yimy Tovar also had a single in the win; the team ultimately went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, stranding nine runners.
