The Padres and Phillies met on Wednesday afternoon for the third and final game of this three-game series in San Diego. San Diego looks to salvage the series after dropping Monday and Tuesday’s games disappointingly.
The Padres go up against one of the top pitchers in baseball, Christopher Sanchez, who, coming into Wednesday, rides a 37 2/3 scoreless innings streak.
Walker Buehler would have the starting duties for the Padres against the team he spent time with a season ago. Coming into Wednesday’s start, Buehler owns a 3.52 ERA at home at Petco Park in comparison to his 8.04 ERA on the road.

Buehler finding ways
Walker Buehler needed just 49 pitches to complete five shutout innings. Buehler was extremely efficient in getting outs, as he’d induce two ground ball double plays throughout his outing. To start his sixth inning of work, Buehler gets Adolis García to ground out. Then came the base runners as Justin Crawford singled and Edmundo Sosa got hit by a pitch to put runners on for Kyle Schwarber in a 0-0 game. In came Adrian Morejon to face the two lefties in a tight game. Buehler threw a light 58 pitches with 35 of them being for strikes.
Unfortunately for this Padres team, Morejon allowed both inherited runners to cross home plate. The Phillies would take a 2-0 lead on a Schwarber RBI single and a Trea Turner RBI ground out.
Buehler’s outing consisted of 5 2/3 innings pitched, two earned runs allowed on three hits. Buehler struck out two batters and did not walk any in his outing.
Crawford robs Machado
Rookie Justin Crawford crashed into the right-center wall as he took away extra bases from Manny Machado.

Fernando shows off at second.
Fernando Tatis Jr. makes a nice over-the-shoulder grab to take away a hit from the Phillies’ third baseman, Alec Bohm.

Philly tacks on more
Ron Marinaccio would allow a leadoff homer in the top of the ninth to Trea Turner. This extended the Phillies’ lead to 3-0.

Alvarado closes the door.
With Jhoan Duran likely unavailable, after pitching Monday and Tuesday, lefty Jose Alvarado was called upon to try and get the save for the Phils. Alvarado struck out Machado and Laureano for his first save of 2026.
Wrap-up
The Padres had absolutely no answer for Christopher Sanchez. Sanchez went seven scoreless innings, allowing six hits and striking out nine. Sanchez finished the month of May without allowing a run and extending his scoreless innings streak to 44 2/3 innings.
Sanchez would improve his 2026 record to 6-2, and Buehler would take the loss and drop to 3-3. The Phillies sweep the Padres and better their record to 28-27. San Diego will fall to 31-24 after Wednesday’s loss.
The Padres’ offense went 0-8 on Wednesday with runners in scoring position. On Monday, they went 0-10, and on Tuesday, they would go hitless as well in two at-bats. This would combine for a dreadful 0-20 with runners in scoring position through the whole series.
Adrian Morejon, Jeremiah Estrada, and Jason Adam would all put up scoreless outings.
Off to the nation’s capital
After the game on Wednesday, the Padres will take off to Washington, where they will get a much-needed day off on Thursday. The Padres and Nationals will begin a three-game weekend series starting on Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 3:45 PM PT/6:45 PM ET. Lucas Giolito is expected to start on Friday vs. the Nats.
