The Aztecs’ final road contest of the season is a must-win game with a Quad 1 opportunity

2025-26 is a unique season for the Mountain West.

This season will be the only time the conference will ever look like this, and it is truly living up to the hype. Nine teams have winning records, and eight of them have winning conference records. Colorado State, Boise State, and UNLV are all tied with a 10-8 conference record but are just one game out of a share of 4th place, and only four wins from first place.

Colorado State has surged to seven straight wins to give them a much better chance in Las Vegas next week. The Rams will take on New Mexico on Wednesday night for an opportunity to help the Aztecs out with an upset win at The Pit.

San Diego State needs some help to give them a chance at earning the one-seed and winning the conference regular season. SDSU and UNM trail Utah State by just one game. The Lobos and Aggies meet in Logan to end the regular season on Saturday afternoon. A UNM loss to CSU, but a win against USU could give SDSU a share of the lead with the Aggies if the Aztecs do their job. Utah State will take on UNLV before hosting the Lobos.

Anything can happen.

The NCAA Tournament is a whole different story. East Village Times broke down what the next two weeks could look like. It may be Mountain West Tournament Champions or bust for this team.

The San Diego State Aztecs’ NCAA Tournament résumé can still improve with a win at Boise State on Tuesday night. They need to focus on that game because the Broncos will not be an easy opponent. Boise State is 11-4 at home with losses to UNLV, Utah State, Grand Canyon, and Hawaii Pacific. The Broncos are 59th in NET rankings with a 2-6 record in Quad 1 games. SDSU is 2-5 in Quad 1.

Triple-OT New Year Triller

One of the biggest wins of the season for San Diego State happened at home on January 3, right after the New Year. The Aztecs took down the Broncos 110-107 in triple overtime as BJ Davis had the biggest game of his season. Davis ended with 22 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and four steals. That is one of the best games off the bench in Aztecs history.

The game was a tale of two halves. SDSU won the first half, dominating offensively, scoring 50 points and leading by 21 at the half. SDSU even led by as much as 24. However, the Broncos stormed back and scored 50 points in the second half themselves, forcing overtime.

In the first OT, the Broncos had the game almost locked up. They led by six with just over 10 seconds remaining until Elzie Harrington (who also had a monster game with 20 points) hit a crucial three-pointer. Davis would then steal the inbound pass, and the backup guard drilled a clutch triple from the top of the key at the buzzer.

SDSU found a way to win in triple overtime, and they avoided a Quad 2 loss.

Key to Sweeping the Broncos

San Diego State is 5-8 at ExtraMile Arena and won there last season in early January. In order for the Aztecs to win two straight in Boise, the team must come together and improve in these certain areas.

Boise State is going to battle at home. They out-rebounded the Aztecs by seven on the road in the first meeting, and they are likely going to control the boards once again. If SDSU didn’t have BJ Davis helping on the boards, SDSU may not have won that game.

The good news is that Magoon Gwath should be much more active this time around. He played only 15 minutes in the first matchup, scoring nine points but not coming down with a single rebound. Gwath must insert himself in the paint this time around and force the boards to a more 50/50 style compared to one-sided. This could be a big game for the 7-footer.

Furthermore, the Scarlet & Black need to be much better from the free-throw line. It’s somehow turned into a difficult task for this group, but on the road in a must-win game, they seriously cannot afford to miss 9+ free throws again on only 22 attempts. This team is at its best when it is wearing out the opponents with pace and getting to the line throughout the game.

I'd like this amount to

Broncos’ Core 4

Four Broncos average double figures in scoring. Drew Fielder leads the team at 13.9 per game on 53.8% shooting. The 6-foot-11 center can shoot the long ball as well at 40%.

Dylan Andrews is second on the team at 12.4 per game, but Javan Buchanan is right behind him at 12.3. Andrew Meadow is 4th at 11.9 per game. All four of them had a huge game against the Aztecs at Viejas. SDSU must contain all four and hope that none of them have monster games again. Buchanan and Meadow combined for 54 points in the first game while Fielder and Andrews both had 16.

If those four get hot, then the Broncos can be dangerous. The Aztecs must find a way to escape Boise with a win.
