Padres minor league affiliates wrapped up the week with a 2-2 record.

Now, onto the games and notable performances.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 7-1 vs Reno) (35-40 on the season)

Dylan Grego – 3-for-4, Double, RBI

Nick Pratto – 1-for-4, Double, Two RBI

Jhony Brito – 4.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K (77 pitches – 52 strikes)

The Chihuahuas’ offense came to play, scoring seven runs against a Reno staff working a bullpen game. Nick Pratto opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second inning against left-hander Spencer Giesting. Dylan Grego then drove in a run on a bloop single to left field, giving El Paso a 2-0 lead. Grego had quite a day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two singles, a double, and a run batted in. For a player who had just 72 at-bats past Single-A, his early results at Triple-A have been impressive (with the caveat of a small sample size). Anthony Vilar singled in a run in the sixth inning, scoring Grego; Vilar came in to score on a wild pitch later in the inning. Carlos D. Rodriguez drove in two runs with a double.

Right-hander Jhony Brito eclipsed the 75-pitch mark, as he threw 4.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Brito struck out five batters against Reno, walking three. While Brito’s pitch shapes were affected in the altitude of El Paso, he was able to get chases on half the changeups Aces batters swung on. He looks as ready as ever for a big league return. Evan Fitterer threw 3.1 innings in relief, striking out one. Fitterer was charged with one run on three hits, with seven outs against him coming via the ground ball. Alek Jacob threw a scoreless ninth to close out the series.

San Antonio Missions (Lost 5-3 vs Corpus Christi) (31-38 on the season)

Braedon Karpathios – 2-for-4, Two Doubles, Run Scored

Francisco Acuna – 1-for-4, Double, Run Scored

Andrew Thurman – 1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 1 K (38 pitches – 16 strikes)

With scheduled starter Eric Yost scratched for undisclosed reasons, the Missions were forced into an impromptu bullpen game. Andrew Thurman, making his first start in affiliated ball since August 5, 2017, allowed two runs on four walks. Thurman’s command was not as sharp as he or the team would’ve liked, with only 16 of his 38 pitches landing in the strike zone. Omar Cruz threw 1.2 innings in relief, allowing one run of his own. Cruz fanned two while walking three. Bernard Jose made his Double-A debut in the loss, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings. The right-hander struck out three, picking up three outs on the ground (including a double play). Clark Candiotti struggled with his command in his second appearance of the series, walking all four batters he faced. Francis Pena walked in a run, scoring an inherited runner, but then closed out the eighth and ninth innings without any further scoring.

Braedon Karpathios hit two doubles in four at-bats, coming around to score one of three Missions runs. Karpathios has been on fire in June, slashing .322/.437/.475 with a .912 OPS and two home runs in 16 games. Francisco Acuna picked up a double as well, scoring a run. Acuna scored one of three ninth-inning runs for San Antonio, scoring on a single by Albert Fabian. Fabian came around to score on a base hit by Luis Verdugo, who reached base for a fourth consecutive game. Kai Murphy drove in a run by reaching on an error.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 6-2 vs South Bend) (29-40 on the season)

Alex McCoy – 3-for-4, Home Run, RBI

Jack Costello – 2-for-3, Home Run, Two RBI

Jamie Hitt – 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K (75 pitches – 48 strikes)

Left-hander Jamie Hitt, coming off a five-run outing against Dayton on the road, pitched a quality start on his team’s home turf. The left-hander struck out four in six innings of two-run baseball. Hitt allowed only five hits, with seven outs against the southpaw coming via the ground ball. Hitt also pulled off a successful pickoff in his outing. Ryan Och picked up the win, his second of the week, by throwing 1.2 scoreless innings in relief. Och struck out three while his fastball sat between 90-92 mph. The left-hander comes from a very low ¾ slot, giving the baseball solid rising action out of his hand. Tucker Musgrove came on in the eighth with the tying run on base and struck out Miguel Useche to get out of the inning unscathed. Musgrove then recorded a scoreless ninth, ending the game with a strikeout of Drew Bowser to pick up his second save of the season.

Alex McCoy opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning to tie the game at one run apiece. McCoy has gotten off the schneid as of late, reaching base safely in 10 of his past 11 games. Justin DeCriscio and Wyatt Hoffman hit doubles in the third and fifth innings, respectively, but both were stranded on base. Entering the eighth inning trailing 2-1, the Comeback ‘Caps were back for an encore performance. Jack Costello singled to open the inning, and Zach Evans lined a game-tying double to the base of the wall in left-center. Evans has hit safely in five straight games and is hitting .286 with a .751 OPS in June. Evans scored three pitches later, as with the infield in, Wyatt Hoffman lined a single up the middle to give the TinCaps a 3-2 lead. With Hoffman advancing to second on a flyout by Kasen Wells, he came in to score on a base hit by Justin DeCriscio. Leading 4-2 on the eighth, Jack Costello hit a two-run blast to left-center field against reliever Nate Williams, giving the TinCaps a commanding 6-2 advantage. Fort Wayne went 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position in the win, sealing a season-series win.

After the game, it was reported by ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel that the Padres are promoting right-hander Tucker Musgrove to Double-A San Antonio.

I'd like this amount to

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 4-3 vs San Jose) (39-30 on the season)

Jorge Quintana – 1-for-3, Two-RBI Single, Two Stolen Bases

Alcides Hernandez – 1-for-3, Sac Fly, RBI

Carlos Medina – 2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 1 K (30 pitches – 21 strikes)

Lake Elsinore starter Carlos Medina lasted two innings in what was likely a planned short start, allowing three runs on five hits. Medina struck out just one batter, with all but three batted balls against him being in the form of line drives. Joseph Herrera threw a scoreless third, inducing a ground ball double play. Brandon Langley threw two scoreless innings, and Rordy Mejia struck out one batter in the sixth. Cal Riehl threw a scoreless seventh inning, and Sean Barnett threw a clean eighth inning. Carson Swilling took the loss, as he allowed a walk-off solo home run to the only batter he faced in the ninth.

The Storm scored all three of their runs in the second inning. Truitt Madonna opened the inning with a single, and a double from Bradley Frye put two runners in scoring position. Jorge Quintana lined a sharp single into right field, tying the game at two runs a side. Quintana swiped second base, and George Bilecki drew a walk to put two on with no outs. Conner Westenburg hit a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position, beating out the play to reach as well. Alcides Hernandez drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly, but Ryan Wideman and Luke Cantwell were unable to score the two remaining runners. Westenburg later doubled, also stealing his 27th base of the season. The Storm were unable to score any further, and stranding the bases loaded in the seventh proved to be crucial.

The Storm will need to make a roster move ahead of their next game, as Tuesday’s scheduled starter, Winyer Chouri,o has reportedly been promoted to High-A Fort Wayne. At the time of his promotion, Chourio had the second-most strikeouts (74) in the California League.
