Xolos Femenil 2019 Clausura: Club Tijuana Ladies Start Season With Loss To Pumas
The Liga MX Femenil 2019 Clausura season started for Xolos Femenil on Monday as the Club Tijuana Ladies played Pumas UNAM at the Estadio Caliente.
A small crowd of 633 spectators witnessed the game on a cold night in Tijuana as Xolos Femenil suffered a 2-0 loss against Pumas to start the new season.
The first half of the match ended 0-0, neither team had clear scoring opportunities, and the Xolos women’s team put up a good fight. The second half was a different story. Right as it went underway, Estefany Hernandez gave Pumas a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute.
The goal came from a nice play by Pumas with a few passes, but was also thanks to poor marking by the Xolos’ defense as Hernandez was able to chip the ball over Xolos’ goalkeeper Itzel Gonzalez. Xolos’ manager Gerardo Romo made his first substitutions in the 58th minute when Valentina Oviedo and Sheila Pulido replaced Daniela Vidal and Yesenia Uriarte.
Evelyn Fernandez then came on for Karen Maprigat in the 83rd minute, but Xolos Femenil could not penetrate Pumas’ very stable defense. Pumas is known to be a very good defensive team, and that was shown in the game as Pumas’ captain Deneva Cagigas gave the Xolos’ forwards a tough time.
Gerardo Romo did push his team forward, and that cost him another goal as Paola Chavero scored in the 90th minute to extend Pumas’ lead to 2-0. The match ended 2-0 in Pumas’ favor at the Estadio Caliente and the score was fair to what was seen on the playing field as the Club Tijuana ladies did not offer much in the game.
Yesenia Uriarte and Carolina Zepeda were the only players to debut for Xolos Femenil in this match, with plenty of returning players from last season on the field.
This was the first time Pumas had defeated Xolos Femenil at the Estadio Caliente since the Liga MX Femenil started in 2017 as the Club Tijuana Ladies will now try and get their first points of the season next week against Veracruz away from home.
