Winter League Report: October 21
The Padres had four players take part in the Winter Leagues today and had varying degrees of success.
Here is a recap of the day’s action:
Arizona Fall League
There were no scheduled games today
Australian League
There were no scheduled games today
Dominican League
Webster Rivas: 0-2, 2 K
After spending the entire 2018 season at Double-A San Antonio, Rivas is with the Gigantes del Cibao to work on his craft in the offseason. He came on as a pinch hitter for catcher Carlos Paulino and struck out in both plate appearances. He also threw out Jorge Mateo as he was trying to steal a base.
Diego Goris: 0-1, K
The Cibaenas scored 13 runs on 18 hits on a big offensive night. Unfortunately, Goris would not be a part of the fun as he made a single pinch-hit appearance and failed to get on base.
Mexican League
While games were played today, no Padres played for the teams.
Venezuelan League
Edward Olivares: 0-4
Olivares led off for the Tigres de Aragua, but he didn’t do much with the opportunity, grounding out twice, flying out to center fielder and popping out in his final at-bat. His five-game hitting streak was snapped, but his average still sits at .280 so far.
Gabriel Arias: 1-3
Young Arias was only able to get a single in his three at-bats during the game. He also committed his third error of the season, a slight concern considering the season is only nine games young. Arias is young enough to correct his mistakes and is still considered a plus defender for now.
Many former Padres played for teams, including the likes of Evereth Cabrera, Alexi Amarista, Ryan Schimpf, and Aaron Northcraft.
