Padres minor league affiliates went 0-6 in a full seven-game slate.

Let’s jump right into it, onto the games!

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 11-0 vs Sugar Land) (35-43 on the season)

Blake Hunt – 1-for-1, Double

Marcos Castanon – 2-for-4, Two Singles

Matt Waldron – 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 4 K (59 pitches – 31 strikes)

El Paso failed to score against a trio of Sugar Land pitchers, going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Blake Hunt picked up the team’s lone extra-base hit of the game with a pinch-hit double in the eighth inning. Both Nick Schnell and Marcos Castanon had two singles in the game, though neither was able to score a run. Carlos D. Rodriguez reached base twice but was caught stealing on his only stolen base attempt. The stolen base attempts by El Paso contributed to the shutout loss, as the team went 0-for-3 in that department.

Matt Waldron made his third rehab start coming back from a brachialis injury, and was effective to an extent. Waldron allowed two runs on two hits, but walked four batters. The right-hander struck out four batters, generating whiffs on 36% of swings against. His cutter got most of the whiffs, though it was also tagged for two barrels. Misael Tamarez worked 3.1 innings on 36 pitches against his former team, riding the fastball-changeup pairing to scoreless relief. His fortunes did not extend to the remaining El Paso relievers, as Ty Adcock was tagged for two runs in one inning of relief. Michael Flynn recorded two outs but allowed six runs, including a grand slam to former Chihuahua Trenton Brooks. Triston McKenzie failed to record the final out of the eighth, walking four straight batters. McKenzie has walked 12 batters in his last four outings combined, which totals just 2.2 innings. More concerningly, the right-hander’s fastball peaked at 92.2 miles per hour while averaging a season-low 91.2 mph. Victor Duarte picked up the final out as the Chihuahuas lost 11-0.

San Antonio Missions (Lost 12-7 vs Arkansas) (32-40 on the season)

Kai Roberts – 4-for-5, Four Singles, RBI

Ryan Jackson – 2-for-6, Double, Three RBI

Ian Koenig – 2 IP, 9 H, 7 R (6 ER), 1 BB, 1 K (51 pitches – 32 strikes)

Missions starter Ian Koenig struggled against Arkansas, as he allowed a season-high nine hits in two innings of work. Koenig was charged with seven runs, six earned, in his start, laboring through a four-run second inning. Andrew Thurman threw three innings of two-run baseball in long relief, striking out four batters. For Thurman, the four strikeouts matched a season-high. Clark Candiotti pitched two innings of relief, striking out three batters. Francis Pena allowed a solo home run in the eighth inning, also striking out two batters.

Kai Roberts had four singles in five at-bats, scoring a run and driving in a run in the sixth inning. Roberts is 9-for-18 in his last five games, raising his batting average from .176 to .217 in that stretch. Chris Sargent Jr had two hits, reaching base four times. One of Sargent’s hits was a solo home run, and he drove in two runs in the contest. Ryan Jackson picked up three RBI in the game, putting the Missions on the board with a two-run double against starter Nico Tellache. Kai Murphy hit a solo home run in the ninth inning and scored three runs for the Missions. Braedon Karpathios picked up a double, starting at first base for just the second time all season. Though Karpathios has an excellent arm and solid range in the outfield, the Padres organization is looking to have the option to play him at first base to increase his versatility as a left-handed thrower.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 8-0 vs Lake County) (31-41 on the season)

Kavares Tears – 1-for-3, Single

Justin DeCriscio – 1-for-4, Single

Carson Montgomery – 1.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 2 K (57 pitches – 31 strikes)

Right-hander Carson Montgomery labored against a strong Captains lineup, recording just five outs. The right-hander threw a scoreless first inning, but threw 27 pitches in the frame. The second inning was more of the same, as he allowed two runners to reach with one out. Montgomery struck out Garrett Howe for out number two, but Tommy Hawke jumped on a fastball to score two runs, giving the Captains a 2-0 lead. A walk later, Montgomery squared off with the Guardians’ top prospect Jace Laviolette. On a 3-2 fastball, Laviolette turned on the pitch to right field, clearing the wall for a three-run home run to chase the TinCaps starter. Nick Falter ended the inning with no further scoring, but allowed a three-run home run in the third inning. It was some rough batted-ball luck for the right-hander, as the home run just barely cleared the wall. Bernard Jose threw 1.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts, keeping the Captains off the board. Ryan Och struck out two in two innings of scoreless baseball, and Javier Chacon struck out three batters in two scoreless innings. At the dish, Fort Wayne was held to just two hits in a shutout loss. Kavares Tears and Justin DeCriscio each finished with a single in the loss. Kerrington Cross drew the team’s lone walk of the game, and the TinCaps stranded four runners on base.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 8-7 vs Fresno) (40-32 on the season)

Yoiber Ocopio – 1-for-3, Two-RBI Double

Jose Verdugo – 1-for-4, Two-RBI Double, Two Runs Scored

Lan-Hong Su – 2.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 2 K (53 pitches – 33 strikes)

Lake Elsinore played host to Padres No. 19 prospect Lan-Hong Su’s Single-A debut. Su pitched into the third inning, striking out two batters. The right-hander allowed four runs in four hits, but issued just one walk. Su picked up five swings-and-misses from the Fresno bats, with three outs coming on the ground. All in all, though his debut was something of a mixed bag, Su has now checked that off the list and is set to be a part of the Storm rotation down the stretch. Cal Riehl allowed two runs in 2.1 innings of relief, striking out one batter. Zimo Qin made his first appearance with Lake Elsinore since August 25, 202,4 with three innings of two-run baseball. Qin struck out four, generating five whiffs along the way. Qin has started and relieved at the ACL level, so he may do a bit of both with the Storm. Rordy Mejia struck out two in an inning of relief.

Yoiber Ocopio put the Storm in front in the first inning with a two-run double. Ocopio had one of two two-run doubles in the game for the Storm, but we’ll get to that. Dylan Grego, starting in left field, picked up a single and a walk, scoring two runs. The Storm went on to have their first inning of Storm-ing of the second half, as they scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs, Yimy Tovar singled, and Dawson Willis worked a walk. Dylan Grego reached on a fielding error, which allowed Tovar to score. Qrey Lott then struck out, but the third strike went for a wild pitch, so Willis rushed home and scored. Jose Verdugo then hit a two-run double to left field, scoring two runs. A wild pitch and a passed ball later, Verdugo scored, and the tying run was on base. The Storm got the tying run to second, but Truitt Madonna was called out on strikes to end the inning. Madonna went 0-for at the plate and was charged with ten stolen bases allowed.

Author’s Note: Storm-ing. Verb – The act of scoring five or more runs in an inning, usually through a combination of singles, stolen bases, and the occasional extra-base hit. Applies to Lake Elsinore Storm.

ACL Padres (Lost 9-4 vs ACL Rockies) (21-19 on the season)

Abraham Bastidas – 1-for-3, Two-RBI Single

Jeronimo Palmeros – 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K

Left-hander Jeronimo Palmeros pitched three hitless innings in the Padres’ 9-4 loss to the ACL Rockies. Palmeros struck out four batters, also picking up four outs via the ground ball. Fellow left-hander Marco Eluscat made his ACL debut, allowing six runs in two-thirds of an inning and taking the loss. Miguel Alvarez allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Florangel Vasquez threw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two. Yoesmerli Beltre worked around two walks to pitch a scoreless eighth. Abraham Bastidas had the Padres’ biggest hit of the day with a two-run single. Moises Valdez hit two singles, scoring one run. Jack Mathey reached base four times in the game, driving in one run. Santiago Contreras had two hits and drove in Eddson Martinez on an RBI single.
