Following a scoreless opening inning, the San Antonio Missions’ rotation crumbled and allowed 17 hits, resulting in an 8-1 defeat on Thursday night at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium. 

The Missions (15-19), who are coming off a series loss to the Frisco Roughriders, fell into an early hole against the Hooks (13-23). Despite the Hooks playing without Houston Astros’ star Chas Mccormick, San Antonio was unable to capitalize. 

A solo shot from left fielder Colin Barber gave the Hooks a 1-0 advantage in the second inning.

Corpus Christi added to their lead in the third with an RBI single from center fielder Kenedy Corona. They tacked on two more with another home run in the fourth, this time from third baseman J.C. Correa, bringing their lead to 4-0.

Missions’ starting pitcher Ryan Bergert, the San Diego Padres No.7 prospect, was pulled from the game in the fifth inning.  

San Antonio scored its first and only point of the game in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI triple from infielder Ripken Reyes, pushing Robert Perez Jr. home. 

Two innings later, the Hooks added three runs to their lead.

Designated hitter Jacob Melton got the rally started with an RBI double. A couple of at-bats later, Missions’ pitcher Reggie Lawson walked Collin Price with the bases loaded. The inning was capped off with a sacrifice fly from Correa to bring the Hooks lead to 7-1. 

An RBI from Melton in the top of the ninth added insult to injury, adding to the already large Hooks lead. The Missions’ offense had no response. 

The Missions will return for game four against the Hooks at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium.
