Padres Down on the Farm: May 15 (Verdugo 2 HR’s for LE)
San Diego Padres affiliates went 3-2 on Wednesday.
Here is a recap of the day’s events.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 9-7 to Las Vegas) (17-24 on the season)
Matthew Batten– (3-for-4) 3B, 2B, 2 Runs, 2 RBI, BB
Tirso Ornelas– (2-for-4) HR, 2B, RBI, Run, 2 K
Brett Sullivan– (2-for-4) Run, BB, K
Daniel Camarena– 3.1 IP, 3 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, K (65 pitches- 34 strikes)
The Chihuahuas pitching staff did not enjoy pitching in Las Vegas on Wednesday night, as they surrendered nine runs and nine hits to the Pilots. El Paso outhit Las Vegas 11-t0-9 but were 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position. Las Vegas was 3-for-5 with runners in scoring position and blasted three homers in the game. Daniel Camarena started the game and coughed up five runs in 3.1 innings of work. Tom Cosgrove continues to get pounded and that is a real concern. The lefty gave up four earned runs and only managed two outs in the game. His ERA is up to 36.00 with the Chihuahuas.
Tirso Ornelas is putting up some decent numbers in the PCL, and the outfielder homered and doubled on Wednesday. Ornelas has a .807 OPS so far this season and could be a candidate for a promotion late in the year. Matthew Batten went 3-for-4 in the game, and Brett Sullivan had two hits for El Paso. Eguy Rosario went 0-for-4 in the game with three K’s.
San Antonio Missions (Lost 5-4 to Corpus Christi in 10 innings) (15-18 on the season)
Marcos Castanon– (1-for-5) 2B, RBI, K
Clay Dungan– (1-for-4) 2B, Run, RBI
Robert Perez Jr.- (2-for-4) Run, SB, K
Jared Kollar– 4 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, K (80 pitches- 49 strikes)
In extras, the Missions lost at home by the score of 5-4. Cole Cummings struck out with the tying run on third base in the bottom of the 10th inning. San Antonio gave up two runs in the top of the inning, but was only able to plate one run in extras. Jared Kollar started the game and went four innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits. Ethan Routzahn and Bobbly Milacki threw four scoreless innings combined (two for each of the pitchers) for the Missions. Jason Blanchard was charged with the loss as he surrendered two runs (both unearned) in two innings of work.
Robert Perez Jr. led the Missions with the bats as the outfielder went 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base. Recently promoted outfielder Clay Dungan went 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Marcos Castanon also doubled for the Missions in five trips to the plate. The Missions were a miserable 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position in the game. That is a recipe for disaster in a close loss.
Fort Wayne TinCaps (3-2 Won over South Bend) (13-22 on the season)
Anthony Vilar– (1-for-3) 2B, Run, RBI, BB
Jay Breshears- (1-for-3) Run, BB

Jagger Haynes started the game and threw six solid innings for Fort Wayne. Haynes struck out three and allowed two earned runs on five hits. Bradgley Rodriguez relieved him and went two innings without allowing a run to score. Tyler Morgan earned the win after pitching a scoreless ninth inning for the TinCaps. Morgan is now 2-1 with a 3.68 ERA on the season.

Ethan Long– (1-for-3) Run, RBI, 2 BB, K

The ACL Padres got off to an early lead and never looked back in a 7-4 win over the A’s. The team scored two runs in each of the first three innings and that put away Oakland. The team totaled 12 hits in the game as each starter recorded a hit except for second baseman Ismael Javier who went 0-for-3. Carlos Rodriguez, Lamar King Jr., Addison Kopack, and Yendry Rojas all had two hits in the win. King was making his first start of the season at the DH position after a shoulder injury sidelined him early in the year.
Aldo Leija started the game and went one inning, striking out two. The 19-year-old right-handed pitcher from Mexico was making his debut for the 2024 season. Yovannki Pascual picked up the win, pitching two innings and allowing one earned run. Braian Salazar earned a hold as he pitched two innings of unearned ball.
