Tony Hawk takes the stage, and the local skateboarding legend shines in The Nutcracker Ballet at the San Diego Civic Theatre in downtown.

An unexpected collaboration leads to a blend of athleticism and artistry in San Diego.

In an extraordinary blend of athletic prowess and artistic expression, skateboarding icon Tony Hawk participated in a live performance of the beloved holiday classic, The Nutcracker Ballet.

Internationally known for his skateboarding tricks and innovation on the half-pipe, Hawk demonstrated his willingness to explore other avenues of expression.

The collaboration came about when Hawk was invited by the Golden State Ballet to make a guest appearance in their holiday production. Never one to shy away from new experiences, Hawk embraced the opportunity to step outside his comfort zone. “I’ve always admired the dedication and athleticism of ballet dancers,” Hawk said. “This was a chance to challenge myself in a totally different way and bring something new to both audiences.”

Hawk has been in over thirty movies, participated in music videos, been in video games, and made countless appearances on television, but this might be his first appearance on stage, unless Hawk participated in a grade school production before he became a global celebrity.

Hawk compared ballet and skateboarding,

“The discipline is similar,” Hawk stated. “Ballet requires balance, control, and creativity, just like skateboarding — but with a very different vocabulary.”

Hawk appeared in Act 1, skating across the stage, being chased by a police officer, to the delight of the crowd. In Act 2, Hawk participated in “The Russian” dressed as a Russian Cossack, gliding across the stage to a quarter pipe ramp where he performed tricks.

Tony Hawk was accompanied on stage by Katelyn West.
