Padres minor league affiliates returned to play on Tuesday, finishing 1-3 in regular-season action.

Here is our daily recap of games played… but first, you know what time it is!

Roster Roundup

  • After two-plus seasons at Double-A, Marcos Castanon is moving up to Triple-A El Paso. Castanon hit .269 with a .758 OPS in 106 games with the Missions in 2025. El Paso also activated Bryan Hoeing from the 7-day injured list. Hoeing missed roughly three weeks due to a lower-body injury.
  • The San Antonio Missions welcomed a pair of arms to their roster, as right-hander Josh Mallitz and left-hander Fernando Sanchez joined the Missions. Marcos Castanon’s promotion opened one roster spot, with Ethan Routzahn going on the 7-day IL, opening a second roster spot.
  • 2025 20th-round pick Luke Cantwell was assigned to High-A Fort Wayne for his professional debut. Isaiah Lowe was placed on the 7-day injured list in a corresponding move, which ends his season.
  • Lake Elsinore (Single-A) saw a five-piece of transactions. The most notable was left-hander Kruz Schoolcraft, the Padres’ first-round pick in the 2025 Draft. Schoolcraft joins the Lake Elsinore roster, and according to sources, is set to start for the team on Saturday in Inland Empire. A pair of fellow draftees join the Storm as well: right-hander Will Koger and left-hander Ryan Reed were also assigned to Lake Elsinore. Pitchers Igor Gil and Charlie Walker were placed on the 7-day injured list in corresponding moves.

And now (breathe)… onto the games!

El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 11-9 vs Salt Lake) (71-61 on the season)

Rodolfo Duran – 1-for-1, Go-Ahead RBI Double

Luis Campusano – 2-for-5, Home Run, Two RBI

Matt Waldron – 5 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 1 BB, 4 K (71 pitches – 50 strikes)

In a standard PCL game, runs are scored en masse, and a team takes a late-inning decisive lead. If this formula is applied, the Chihuahuas most certainly cooked. Rodolfo Duran’s pinch-hit RBI double gave the Chihuahuas a 10-9 lead that would only be added to, as El Paso won 11-9 in Salt Lake City. Luis Campusano and Tirso Ornelas launched solo homers in the win, with Campusano’s blast being his 24th of the season. The 24 homers are nine more than his previous career high (15). The top five in the Chihuahuas’ order appeared to channel their inner Starship Troopers, each doing their part and finishing with two RBI each. Clay Dungan drove in two on a sixth-inning single. Yonathan Perlaza hit an RBI double in the sixth and an RBI single in the ninth, giving him 98 RBI on the season. Outside of their homers, Campusano and Ornelas had back-to-back RBI base hits in the fifth inning, and Nate Mondou capped off the four-run fifth with a two-run single.

Matt Waldron started for the Chihuahuas, pitching five innings of seven-run baseball. The right-hander got just six whiffs on 40 swings, surrendering nine hits and one walk in the outing. Waldron pitched deeper into the game than would be expected by the final stat line, as he was economical with his pitch count, striking out four batters. Bryan Hoeing allowed one run in 0.2 innings, and Raul Brito pitched 1.1 scoreless frames with three innings in relief. Bradgley Rodriguez allowed an RBI single to Ben Gamel in the eighth inning, knotting the game at nine. However, Rodriguez would earn his second win of the season with El Paso after the ninth-inning rally. El Paso turned to the newest Chihuahua in Stephen Jones for the save. Jones used his fastball-slider combo to set up three ground ball outs, earning his first Triple-A save since 2023.

San Antonio Missions (Lost 2-1 in 10 innings vs Corpus Christi) (60-66 on the season)

Mosies Gomez – 1-for-4, Double, RBI

Christopher Sargent – 1-for-4, Single

Eric Yost – 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 6 K (82 pitches – 47 strikes)

Right-hander Eric Yost made his best start since his Missions debut, striking out six in six innings. Yost allowed only one unearned run, walking two against the six punchouts. The right-hander seems to have found his footing at a new level, lowering his ERA for the Missions to 4.11 in six starts, averaging just over five innings per start. Yost induced two double plays and seven ground ball outs, using his fastball-sweeper-slider-change combo to generate strong results. Garrett Hawkins made his second consecutive appearance, not in the ninth inning, pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball with two strikeouts. It was Hawkins’ first multi-inning appearance since August 20. Harry Gustin threw 2.1 innings in relief, allowing only the automatic runner to score. Gustin is another arm earning himself some attention this season, as he has fanned 28.8% of batters while walking 10.3% of hitters this season. The Missions’ offense, however, put up a tough performance against the Hooks. San Antonio tallied five hits all game, and four walks were not enough for the lineup to push across more than one run. Moises Gomez’s RBI forceout in the sixth scored their only run of the game, with the team going 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Devin Ortiz had two singles in four at-bats and looks to shake off a tough August (.154 average, .536 OPS). Damon Dues drew two walks, scoring the lone Missions’ run.

I'd like this amount to

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 8-5 vs West Michigan) (55-71 on the season)

Eguy Rosario – 2-for-5, Two Doubles, Three RBI

Brendan Durfee – 1-for-4, Home Run

Ian Koenig – 5 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 3 K (87 pitches – 55 strikes)

The TinCaps gave the West Michigan juggernaut a valiant fight, ultimately falling 8-5. Eguy Rosario led Fort Wayne’s offense. Batting leadoff, Rosario hit two doubles in the loss, driving in three runs. Rosario has hits in six of his last 15 at-bats after starting his rehab assignment in a 2-for-26 slump. Brendan Durfee hit his sixth homer of the season, bringing the TinCaps within one run in the fourth inning. The bottom of the lineup was extremely productive for the TinCaps, as Zach Evans went 2-for-4 out of the eighth spot in the lineup, scoring two runs. Kai Roberts finished with two hits as well, also scoring twice.

Ian Koenig pitched five innings for the TinCaps, but the potent West Michigan lineup tagged him for seven runs. The seven runs allowed were a season-high for Koenig, who struck out three in the start. Koenig has shown improvements in his command as the season has progressed, which is a positive sign for the 24-year-old in his first full season at the High-A level. Ruben Galindo allowed one run in one inning of work, and he has now pitched to a 11.80 ERA (with a more reassuring 4.70 FIP) in his last seven outings. Nick Wissman threw two scoreless innings with three strikeouts for the TinCaps. Wissman has now worked at least two innings in his previous four appearances, allowing only one run in that span.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 3-2 in 10 innings vs Inland Empire) (56-71 on the season)

Carlos Rodriguez – 3-for-5, Three Singles, Run Scored

Dylan Grego – 2-for-5, Two Singles

Jaxon Dalena – 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K (45 pitches – 26 strikes)

Lake Elsinore saw strong performances from a trio of recent additions, as Jaxon Dalena, Ryan Reed, and Landry Jurecka combined for six innings of scoreless baseball. Dalena got the start for the Storm, pitching two innings of scoreless baseball. Dalena struck out two batters, working out of a first-inning jam. Jordan Valenzuela walked two in a wild 0.2 innings, allowing one run. Kleiber Olmedo ended the bases-loaded threat with a strikeout, pitching two more innings and allowing one run. Left-hander Ryan Reed made his debut in the sixth, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings. Landry Jurecka got out of another bases-loaded jam in the seventh and went on to throw the eighth and ninth without allowing a run.

At the dish, Carlos Rodriguez finished with three base hits, all singles, while scoring one of the Storm’s two runs. The Storm loaded the bases in the first inning, scoring one on a wild pitch, but Truitt Madonna grounded out to end the inning and strand two runners. Lake Elsinore went ahead 2-1 in the fourth inning, as a walk to Ty Harvey and a single by Madonna set up runners on the corners for Jorge Quintana. Quintana, who hit .183 with a .514 OPS in August, hit a sacrifice fly to give the Storm a lead. Dylan Grego finished with another two-hit game, and Justin DeCriscio was 1-for-4 with a single. The team finished 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, stranding 11 in the loss.
