The Reds and Padres meet on Wednesday afternoon for the rubber match of this three-game series in San Diego. The Padres took game one thanks to the 7-9 hitters of Jase Bowen, Samad Taylor, and Freddy Fermin going a combined 5-15 with five RBIs. Tuesday’s 11-inning game went to the Red Sox, propelled by Sal Stewart‘s go-ahead home run.

Brady Singer takes the mound for Terry Francona and the Cincinnati Reds. Singer, in 55.0 innings pitched, has a 5.89 ERA along with a 6.9 K/9 rate.

Michael King makes his 14th start of the season on Wednesday. In his latest outing last Friday, he allowed four earned runs in six innings, while striking out four.

Samad Taylor makes his fourth consecutive start

Taylor has played a great left field and has hit .364/.500/.455 in 15 plate appearances as a Padre.

Merrill and Machado put San Diego on the board

A Jackson Merrill single followed by a Manny Machado double gets the scoring going in Wednesday’s game.

Reds take the lead in the fourth

Spencer Steer hits his tenth home run of the year to give Cincinnati its first lead of the game.

The Padres tie it up

Fernando Tatis Jr. drives in Rodolfo Duran and ties the game at two apiece in the bottom of the fifth.

Bleday blast

Michael King, with his pitch count over 100 in the seventh innings, lets a. changeup hang against JJ Bleday, which would give Cincinnati the late lead.

King battles through 6 2/3 innings

Bradgley Rodriguez, Jason Adam, Adrian Morejon, and Mason Miller all pitched back-to-back outings on Monday and Tuesday and were all likely unavailable on Wednesday. This meant that Michael King had to power through this outing and pitch as deep as possible. King did not have his best stuff on Wednesday, with his first strikeout of the day coming in the fifth inning. He’d toss 6 2/3 innings, while allowing three earned runs on seven hits. King walked three, struck out three, and allowed two homers. 106 would be the final tally of pitches during King’s outing, with 70 of them being for strikes.

Suarez extends the Cincinnati advantage

Ron Marinaccio came in for King in the seventh and would work into the eighth inning. Eugenio Suarez would take Marinaccio deep and widen the margin to two runs.

Striking back in the eighth

Jackson Merrill and Gavin Sheets each hit doubles in the eighth to put the Padres within a run.

Who else but Samad Taylor to tie it up in the eighth?

Tatis walks it off

Following a clean inning from Wandy Peralta in the top of the ninth, the Padres’ 8-9-1 batters were due up with a chance to walk it off. Reds rookie Chase Petty had a tall task to keep the game tied and it it into extras. Fernando Tatis Jr. lined a 2-1 slider from Petty into the left field seats to walk it off for San Diego. Certainly a high note to take on the upcoming road trip. This home run by Tatis Jr. marks his first home run of the 2026 season.

Recap

Wandy Peralta, the Padres pitcher in the ninth, would receive his first decision of the season, with the win.

Chase Petty would get the loss in Wednesday’s game.

The Reds scored four runs on 10 hits and did not make any errors.

The Padres had five runs, 11 hits, and also did not record any errors defensively.

Back in action on Friday

The Padres will be off on Thursday in Baltimore, the first city of their three-city road trip. They will begin their series against the Orioles on Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 4:05 PM PT/7:05 PM ET. Griffin Canning is expected to be San Diego’s starting pitcher. Shane Baz, the former Ray, is the probable pitcher for the O’s.
