The two teams faced each other four times last season, with San Diego Loyal sweeping all four matches, including a 3-0 shutout road win on October 2. Overall, San Diego Loyal outscored “Los Dos” by a combined difference of 11-3 in 2021, which was a significant reason why the LA Galaxy missed the playoffs by only two points.
“We’re extremely excited to kick off our third season in front of our home crowd and passionate supporters at Torero Stadium on March 12,” head coach Landon Donovan said.
The San Diego Loyal has lost only one of their seven all-time meetings against their rivals up north, with the lone victory for LA Galaxy II coming in their first-ever head-to-head match up back on July 19, 2020. San Diego acquired Augustine Williams on loan from LA back on August 20 of last year to help the team with their push for the playoffs, with the talented striker being one of the primary reasons why they were able to make their first-ever appearance.
SD Loyal’s full 2022 USL Championship schedule will be announced next Wednesday, January 12, with the 34-game regular season set to conclude on the weekend of October 14-16 ahead of the 2022 USL Championship Playoffs.
“Our goal, as always, is to bring a championship home to San Diego and that journey starts now,” Donovan added.
As for the team’s preseason schedule, the team will face five teams, including a friendly against Xolos de Tijuana on February 19 at Torero Stadium. Preseason kicks off on February 5 against New Mexico United.
