San Diego FC sign Alex Mighten from Nottingham Forest
This Friday, August 30, San Diego FC announced the signing of Alex Mighten from English club Nottingham Forest.
The 22-year-old English American winger signed a two-and-a-half-year contract through the 2026 MLS season with a club option for an extra year.
SDFC also paid Nashville SC $50,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money in exchange for Discovery Priority to Mighten. San Diego is currently looking to loan out the speedy winger for the remainder of the year before Mighten joins SDFC in January of 2025.
Alex Mighten was born in Hartford, Connecticut, while his father, Eddie, was working for ESPN as a soccer analyst. The bulk of Alex’s youth career was at Nottingham Forest, where he eventually cracked the first team in 2019. Mighten made his professional debut in a 5-0 loss for Forest against Arsenal in the EFL Cup.

The 22-year-old winger has been loaned out to Sheffield Wednesday, KV Kortrijk, and Port Vale in recent years. Mighten has not been able to receive many opportunities at Nottingham Forest, so this move can be a great opportunity for him.
The English American player has represented England throughout the youth levels but has yet to receive a senior call-up. Mighten is still eligible to represent the USMNT, and it will be interesting to see if he decides to take that route in international play.
SDFC Sporting Director Tyler Heaps commented on the signing. “Alex is an exciting addition to San Diego FC, bringing the energy and creativity we seek in our attacking players,” Heaps said.
Mighten himself also commented on joining San Diego FC. “The opportunity to develop further at SDFC and MLS is a perfect scenario for my growth as a player. I can’t wait to contribute to the club’s success and help build something special in San Diego.”
Hirving Lozano can play on either wing, which opens a spot for Mighten in the starting 11 for San Diego. However, it is unclear if he will crack that eventual starting lineup with several more signings to go before the 2025 MLS season. Mighten is a young player with potential that fits very well into the landscape San Diego FC is trying to create.
