San Diego FC played its second preseason match ahead of the 2025 MLS season this Wednesday, February 12. SDFC faced off against Portland Timbers and suffered a 3-0 defeat at the Empire Polo Fields in Coachella, CA.
Mikey Varas’ lineup for this game was as follows: Pablo Sisniega, Jasper Loffelsend, Paddy McNair, Ian Pilcher, Hamady Diop, Alejandro Alvarado, Onni Valakari, Luca De La Torre, Emmanuel Boateng, Anisse Saidi, Alex Mighten.
Paddy McNair and Alejandro Alvarado were the only players that started the last game against New York City that, also started this match. Hirving Lozano came on in the second half and was among the best for SDFC offensively, with a pair of goalscoring opportunities. One opportunity by “Chucky” was saved by Portland’s goalkeeper, while the other smashed the post.
Felipe Mora scored the first goal of the match with an exceptional finish from inside of the box between two San Diego defenders.

Gage Guerra scored two consecutive unanswered goals that sealed the 3-0 scoreline in the valley. Portland had well-constructed offensive drives on both scoring plays, while San Diego suffered from some sloppy marking inside of the penalty area.
Mikey Varas is still trying to find his ideal starting lineup ahead of the season-opener against LA Galaxy on February 23. Clearly, the Chilean-American manager has yet to find that lineup, but players like Hirving Lozano and Paddy McNair are definitely locks.
SDFC will play its final preseason match in Coachella this Saturday, February 15, against New York Red Bulls. San Diego will face LA Galaxy before the historic home-opener against St. Louis at Snapdragon Stadium on March 1.
