San Diego FC fans still asking for “Chucky” Lozano

San Diego FC is in its lowest point in franchise history, currently on a five-game losing streak and an eight-game winless streak. SDFC is coming off a 2-1 loss against the Portland Timbers at Snapdragon Stadium, and the fans were very vocal during and after the defeat.
There were notably several “Chucky Lozano” chants after the match, even heard around the supporters’ section. Lozano was signed as the franchise player for this team, but was separated from the squad after an internal conflict with manager Mikey Varas.

“No Chance” is what Varas replied when asked if he would change his opinion on Lozano. Varas was then asked about the chants heard after the Portland game.
“Everybody has a right to cheer how they want or support however they want. That’s up to every individual as long as it’s not discriminatory or against our values. I’m a big boy, that’s fine,” said Varas.
Varas also thanked the fans for the continued support during this rough patch in his statement.

Anders Dreyer was also asked about this matter after that game and gave an almost word-for-word response of what his head coach said.
Lozano has been a fan-favorite with Mexican soccer fans throughout his career and was nearly universally liked by SDFC fans. It comes as no surprise to see these chants and fans demanding the return of the Mexican star constantly on social media.
However, it seems almost impossible for Lozano to ever return to San Diego FC at this stage. “Chucky” is not even registered with the club this season, and it is not only Varas who has backed this decision.
The team and front office have also shown Varas support and seem to be very firm on this. While it seems to be clear that Lozano would benefit this club, there also seems to be no turning back from this decision.
It is also important to consider that SDFC’s issues in this lackluster form have not only been offensive. While the offense has been lacking, there have been severe defensive and disciplinary issues within this squad.
The squad depth itself also appears to be lacking, with no reliable replacements for certain positions. The midfield depth in particular is worrisome, especially after team captain Jeppe Tverskov had to be taken off due to discomfort against Portland.
San Diego FC still has a Designated Player spot available, and it is a mystery as to why it has yet to be filled. The Azul and Chrome side will face a very tough task in LAFC this weekend, and it will be interesting to see if the chants for the Mexican star continue to be present.
