San Diego FC played its last game of the 2026 MLS regular season before the World Cup break. SDFC hosted the Vancouver Whitecaps at Snapdragon Stadium this Saturday, May 23.
San Diego FC was heading into this match on a four-game undefeated streak, but was still plagued by inconsistency. While San Diego’s offense had been thriving in recent games, the defense still suffered from the same problems it has had all year.
The Southern California team suffered these inconsistencies in play again in the match against Vancouver. The Whitecaps were the only team present in the first half of play, as the visitors really dominated the Azul and Chrome side.
SDFC had no shots on target in the opening 45 minutes, while Vancouver scored two goals and ended with six shots on target. Brian White scored the first two goals of the game, adding to his already impressive campaign.
White’s first goal came in the 30th minute when Thomas Müller sent in a pinpoint cross that the veteran striker was able to easily put away. White scored his second goal of the night just before halftime.

The scoring play was a very well-crafted play by Vancouver that started with a cross into the box from Kenji Cabrera. Jeevan Badwal received the ball in the box and set the ball up for White, who finished the play with a very well-located shot.

The lone positive for San Diego FC from that first half was that goalkeeper CJ dos Santos made a few decent saves. It has been a big week for dos Santos, who was called up for the Cape Verde national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The goalkeeper change was one of the surprises in Mikey Varas’ lineup,p along with Luca Bombino hitting the bench and Anibal Godoy out due to injury.
Bombino came on at the start of the second half for Kieran Sargeant and really added more offensive prowess to this team.
David Vazquez was able to cut the deficit in the 53rd minute with a fantastic goal from a shot from well outside of the box. Anders Dreyer was credited with the assist on the play, but it was really Vazquez who did all of the legwork with his potent strike.

Vancouver quickly responded to this goal as Bruno Caicedo made it a 3-1 game in the 67th minute. Thomas MMüllerled the attacking charge and passed the ball to Brian White on the right side of the box. White then passed the ball to the left side over to Caicedo, who had an easy finish in front of the net.

The scoring play was made with a lot of precision by the visitors, who were still clearly the much better team on the pitch.
Things then had a disastrous turn for SDFC as Luca Bombino was given a second yellow card in the 72nd minute, leaving his team with 10 men. After five games without a red card, that very prevalent problem returned for San Diego FC in this match.

The Azul and Chrome side was completely out of the game at this point, and Vancouver was not done yet as Ralph Priso made it 4-1 in the 75th minute.
The scoring play was an odd one that started off a corner kick. Thomas Müller launched the sphere into the box from the right flank and found Brian White.
It appeared as if the ball was heading into the back of the net from White’s strike, but Priso made the final touch and was credited with the goal. White was credited with an assist, capping off his memorable game with four total goal contributions on the night.
Gotta make sure the ball crosses the line! 😅

Right to Dream graduate Bryan Zamble was able to score his second-career goal in stoppage time, but this was merely a consolation goal. It was a positive to see Zamble score another goal, but this had zero impact on what this game had been for San Diego FC.

SDFC was outclassed on the night by one of the very best teams in MLS, and a lot of the persistent problems for San Diego came back in this match.
The Azul and Chrome side will now have a lot of time to prepare for the second half of the season as play returns on July 22. San Diego is currently in 10th place on the Western Conference table and would be missing the playoffs in this position.
