Padres affiliates went 4-2 on Tuesday.

Here is our daily recap of games played. 

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 4-3 vs Salt Lake) (47-67 on the season)

Ethan Salas – 1-for-4, Single, Sac Fly, RBI

Dustin Harris – 2-for-4, Double, RBI

JP Sears – 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K (47 pitches – 33 strikes)

The tandem of JP Sears and Andrew Thurman combined to throw a quality start for the Chihuahuas, allowing two runs on three hits in six innings. Sears threw 47 pitches in three innings, striking out five batters. The left-hander has pitched in shorter outings since the trade deadline to fit the pitching chaos strategy, as well as to increase his availability should be needed at the MLB level. Andrew Thurman was well on his way to his first career Triple-A win, as the right-hander threw three innings of one-run baseball. Thurman’s stuff didn’t grade out particularly well, but he got results. David Morgan threw a scoreless inning with two strikeouts, throwing an average fastball velocity of 97.8 mph. Hunter Stratton threw a scoreless eighth inning with three strikeouts. Alek Jacob took the loss, allowing two runs on three walks and two hits in the ninth. 

The El Paso lineup out-hit the Bees 9-7, but went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position in the loss. Ethan Salas went 1-for-4 with a sac fly and a single, driving in one run. The Padres’ No. 1 prospect put five balls in play, and three of them came off the bat with exit velocities over 95 mph. Dustin Harris went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, also drawing a walk. Gage Workman went 1-for-3 in his El Paso debut, driving in one run with a sacrifice fly and scoring a run as well. Bryce Johnson went 1-for-5 with a triple and a run scored in the loss. 

San Antonio Missions (Won 7-4 vs Frisco) (50-59 on the season)

Albert Fabian – 4-for-4, Double, Three Singles, RBI

Romeo Sanabria – 4-for-5, Two Doubles, Three RBI

Ian Koenig – 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K (92 pitches – 63 strikes)

Normally, if a team goes one-on-one with another team, each team has a 50% chance of winning. But San Antonio had two players with four-hit games, and that’s not normal, so Frisco had a 25% chance at best. All gimmicks aside, the Missions tallied 18 hits in a dominant win over the RoughRiders on their home soil. Romeo Sanabria was back with the Missions, and he went 4-for-5 with two doubles and six total bases. Sanabria went on to drive in three runs for San Antonio. Albert Fabian went 4-for-4 with a double, three singles, and one run batted in. Fabian has opened the month of August, hitting .313 with a .718 OPS. Carson Tucker hit a double in a three-hit performance, and Tirso Ornelas went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles. Luis Verdugo went 1-for-4 with a single and two RBI. Jake Cunningham went 2-for-3 in the game with two singles and an RBI, while Braedon Karpathios reached base twice in the contest. Eight of nine starters for San Antonio picked up at least one base hit. 

Right-hander Ian Koenig repeated his last performance in Frisco, as he pitched seven scoreless innings for the Missions. Koenig only generated nine whiffs, but was successful at keeping the ball in the ballpark. Koenig did not allow a home run (because he didn’t allow a run to score to begin with), and eight of his outs generated came via the ground ball. At one point, Koenig retired 13 of 14 batters faced in a row, with the 13th batter erased after a double play. Clay Edmondson allowed three runs (one earned) in two-thirds of an inning, with two bequeathed runners scoring against Harry Gustin. Josh Mallitz allowed a solo home run in the ninth, but otherwise closed out the win.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 5-4 vs Quad Cities) (46-61 on the season)

Alex McCoy – 2-for-4, Double, Two RBI

Luke Cantwell – 1-for-3, Single, RBI

Luis Gutierrez – 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K (55 pitches – 36 strikes)

Kannon Kemp – 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 2 K (70 pitches – 44 strikes)

Fort Wayne saw two starting pitchers combine for eight innings of two-run baseball in their loss to Quad Cities. Luis Gutierrez threw 55 pitches in three innings, allowing just one base hit. Gutierrez struck out four batters, generating 10 swings and misses on 36 strikes. Kannon Kemp threw five innings in long relief, a season-high. Kemp allowed two runs on five hits. While he only struck out two, Kemp generated eight outs via the ground ball. 

The TinCaps offense was held to three hits, but they drew six walks in the loss. Alex McCoy had the team’s only double, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. McCoy singled in a run in the third inning and added on with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. Luke Cantwell hit an RBI single in the first inning, giving the TinCaps an early lead. Rosman Verdugo hit a sacrifice fly in the game. 

Fort Wayne turned to Will Varmette to close out the game, but the right-hander was greeted rudely by Quad Cities shortstop Ben North. The undrafted free agent out of Creighton University launched his first home run of the season. Varmette walked Erick Torres on five pitches before getting a ground ball back to him. Varmette’s throw to first got just over the glove of Luke Cantwell, and Rosman Verdugo was unable to cover the throw in time, which saw Torres speed around from first to tie the game. The TinCaps closer got two strikes on his next batter, and a 1-2 slider low and away was not blocked by catcher Carlos E. Rodriguez. The pitch went to the backstop, and Rodriguez’s throw home was not in time, scoring the winning run.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 11-10 vs Inland Empire) (59-50 on the season)

Joe Tiroly – 2-for-5, Home Run, RBI

Chris McHugh – 3-for-4, Home Run, Double, RBI

Jesus A. Castro – 2.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 4 K (73 pitches – 42 strikes)

In a back-and-forth slugfest, Lake Elsinore outscored the 66ers 9-1 over the final six innings to snag a win in the series opener. Ace Jesus A. Castro took the mound for the Storm, but did not have his best stuff in the contest. Castro allowed six hits (two for extra bases) despite still striking out four batters. The right-hander threw a wild pitch that allowed a run to score in the first inning, but the real trouble came in the third. Inland Empire tied the game with three one-out singles in a row and loaded the bases with two outs. Castro then hung a 2-2 changeup to Nick Becker, which cleared the bases with a double and chased the Storm starter. Ryan Reed allowed a single and a home run to the next two batters, making it an eight-run inning for the 66ers.

Reed pitched a scoreless fourth before turning the baton over to Florangel Vasquez. In his second Single-A appearance, Vasquez held down the fort with 3.2 innings of one-run baseball, striking out five. The right-hander’s 11 outs recorded picked up his team, giving them continuous momentum down the stretch. 

Ty Harvey opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, scoring leadoff man Nu’u Contrades. Qrey Lott led off the third inning with his first home run since June 17, a solo shot to left field. After falling behind, the Storm did not go quietly. Jorge Quintana and Joe Tiroly reached base to open the fourth, and Truitt Madonna then pulled a slider down the left field line for a two-run double into the corner. With two on and two out in the same inning, Nu’u Contrades singled to right field, and a fielding error from right fielder Henry Ford allowed the Storm to pull within slam range. Joe Tiroly’s next at-bat came in the fifth inning, and after just missing a homer earlier, he made sure of it this time. Tiroly crushed a home run to left field to bring Lake Elsinore to within just two runs. Chris McHugh scored a run in the sixth on a Qrey Lott sac fly, and it was a one-run game.

McHugh took a big swing to open the eighth, hitting a fly ball to dead center field that was called a home run by the base umpire, tying the game. Jesmaylin Arias singled to put a runner on, and Dawson Willis replaced him on the bases. Willis swiped second and third, scoring on a wild pitch. Qrey Lott and Nu’u Contrades then reached second and third on a single and double, with Lott scoring on a groundout by Alex Conover. Brandon Langley entered the game with two outs in the eighth and picked up the final four outs to earn the save and close a Storm instant classic. 

DSL Padres Gold (Won 2-0 vs DSL Tampa Bay) (37-14 on the season)

Johanneiker Leon – 1-for-3, Double, RBI

Dayquer Alfonzo – 1-for-3, Triple, Run Scored

Carlos Alvarez – 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K

The DSL Padres Gold clinched a playoff berth with a shutout win over the DSL Tampa Bay club. Carlos Alvarez went five shutout innings, and despite not picking up a strikeout, he was able to pitch one of his best starts of the season. Alvarez lowered his ERA to 3.25 on the season, and he will likely be able to be one of the Padres Gold’s playoff starters. Jederson Paez threw two scoreless innings to close out the game. The Padres Gold took a lead in the second inning, as Dayquer Alfonzo tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Eliander Primera scored in the sixth inning after taking over for Sebastian Nadales. Johanneiker Leon doubled to left field, and Primera came around from first to score. 

DSL Padres Brown (Won 8-1 vs DSL Athletics) (10-32 on the season)

Dawry Guerrero – 1-for-3, Triple, RBI, Two Runs Scored

Jhostin Fuentes – 1-for-4, Double, RBI

Angel Gamarra – 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 4 K

Despite allowing nine baserunners, Angel Gamarra threw six innings of one-run baseball. Gamarra struck out four, walked five, and picked up five groundouts. Aneury Sosa pitched the final inning, stranding two baserunners. The Padres Brown took the lead in the first inning, as Yonnaiker Hernandez hit into a two-run-scoring fielder’s choice. Dawry Guerrero hit an RBI triple in the game and scored on a wild pitch. The Padres Brown would score twice more on another Athletics error in the fourth. Rafael Moran drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth, and Jhostin Fuentes hit into a run-scoring out to cap off the scoring at eight.
