Padres affiliates went 1-3 on Wednesday.

Let’s jump right into the games’ events. 

El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 5-2 vs Salt Lake) (48-67 on the season)

Mason McCoy – 2-for-3, Go-Ahead Home Run

Rodolfo Duran – 1-for-4, RBI Double

Jagger Haynes – 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 5 K (82 pitches – 54 strikes)

Left-hander Jagger Haynes threw five innings for the first time at the Triple-A level, allowing just four hits and two unearned runs. Haynes leaned on his slider and sinker against Salt Lake, and the approach paid off. Batters posted an xWOBACon of 0.000 against the slider, and the pitch posted elite whiff and chase rates. If Haynes is able to lean on that slider and sequence the rest of his stuff to keep batters off the slider consistently, he has every chance to crack a Major League roster. Logan Gillaspie threw two scoreless innings, earning his fifth win of the season. Ty Adcock threw a scoreless eighth inning, and Hans Crouse picked up the save in a scoreless ninth. Ethan Salas went 1-for-4 with a single in the game, stealing his first base at the Triple-A level before scoring a run. Rodolfo Duran’s RBI double scored Salas, with Duran scoring on the tail end of a double steal. Mason McCoy gave El Paso a lead with a solo home run off Dillon Tate in the seventh inning. El Paso got insurance in the eighth, as Carlos D. Rodriguez hit an RBI single. Rodriguez scored on Nick Solak’s 20th double of the season. 

San Antonio Missions (Lost 7-3 vs Frisco) (50-60 on the season)

Carson Tucker – 1-for-4, Triple, RBI

Albert Fabian – 1-for-3, Single, Sac Fly, Two RBI

Fernando Sanchez – 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K (52 pitches – 41 strikes)

Fernando Sanchez pitched five innings of scoreless baseball for the Missions, but the San Antonio bullpen allowed seven unanswered runs in a loss. Sanchez allowed just one hit, with six of his 15 outs coming via the ground ball. Sanchez struck out four batters, while not issuing a walk. Tucker Musgrove allowed one run in two-thirds of an inning, picking up two strikeouts. Sadrac Franco allowed an inherited runner to score in 1.1 innings of relief, striking out two batters. Garrett Hawkins allowed two runs on three hits in the eighth inning, which tied the game. Jose Leclerc entered the game in the ninth, allowing a hit and two walks before Max Wagner turned on a 3-2 cement mixer slider from Leclerc. Wagner called game with a grand slam. San Antonio picked up six hits in the game, but went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Albert Fabian drove in two runs in the game, hitting a sacrifice fly and an RBI single in the game. Carson Tucker hit a triple in the third inning, driving in Luis Verdugo. Braedon Karpathios and Romeo Sanabria went 1-for-4 in the game, with Sanabria scoring a run. 

Fort Wayne TinCaps – Postponed vs Quad Cities

Due to a power outage in Davenport, Iowa, Fort Wayne’s scheduled game against Quad Cities was postponed. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday, August 15. 

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 3-1 vs Inland Empire) (59-51 on the season)

Chris McHugh – 2-for-4, Double

Jesmaylin Arias – 2-for-4, Two Singles, Stolen Base

Cameron Nohos – 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 9 K (95 pitches – 59 strikes)

Lake Elsinore and Inland Empire, one night removed from a back-and-forth slugfest, engaged in a Cal League pitcher’s duel. Storm starter Cameron Nohos struck a career-best nine batters in 5.2 innings against the 66ers. Nohos got 16 swings and misses from Inland Empire’s lineup, and while he walked four, the right-hander was able to limit the damage. Nohos has shown some inconsistencies in his velocity and breaking ball shape, but he flashed the potential he has to be a solid starting pitcher at the professional level. Rordy Mejia took the loss, pitching 2.1 innings of two-run baseball. Mejia was one pitch from escaping the sixth inning unscathed, but hung an 0-2 slider to Grant Jay. Jay delivered a two-run home run to put Lake Elsinore behind. The Storm had a pair of multi-hit performances in the contest, as Chris McHugh followed up his debut game with two hits. McHugh hit a double in the game, Lake Elsinore’s lone extra-base hit of the game. Jesmaylin Arias hit two singles in the game, stealing a base as well. Dawson Willis reached base twice, stealing a base. Willis also made his first appearance in center field, a new position for the former Oklahoma product. 

DSL Padres Gold – No Game

DSL Padres Brown (Lost 9-5 vs DSL Brewers Blue) (10-40 on the season)

Sebastian Maldonado – 2-for-3, Double, RBI

Rafael Moran – 1-for-3, RBI Double

Deon Tusent – 2.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R (2 ER), 3 BB, 1 K

Despite scoring five runs, the Padres Brown’s pitching staff allowed a four-spot in the fifth to take their 40th loss of the season. Sebastian Maldonado picked up two hits for the Padres, including an RBI double. Yonnaiker Hernandez walked with the bases loaded to score a run, and was on base when Maldonado scored on a wild pitch. Berman Moreno hit a sacrifice fly to score Hernandez, plating the Padres Brown’s fourth run. Rafael Moran tied the game in the fifth with an RBI double. Starter Deon Tusent went 2.2 innings, allowing three runs. Tusent walked three while striking out one. Diego Alfonzo made his pro debut, allowing two runs on four walks in one inning. Gensy Aquino took the loss, allowing four runs in two-thirds of an inning.
