Padres Winter League Report: November 15 (Gettys Debuts in Australia)
Peoria won 2-1 over Scottsdale, with two late runs in the ninth to improve to 21-9 on the year. They will play on Saturday for the AFL Championship.
There were a few other players in action on Thursday.
Here is a recap of the day’s events:
Arizona Fall League
Hudson Potts– (0-2)
Potts played a few innings in the desert and went 0-for-2 on the day. He is at .228 for the year and in a bit of a slump with the bat. It remains to be seen if he will be in the starting lineup for Saturday’s championship game.
Dominican winter league
No games scheduled
Venezuelan winter league
Gabriel Arias– (0-4) 3 K, error
Arias is hitting .268 on the year, but he did commit his 8th error of the season. This time the blunder was on a fielding miscue. The Padres have to be slightly concerned that Arias is not showing the Gold Glove-caliber defense that they envisioned from him.
Mexican winter league
Christian Villanueva– (2-4)
The Padres’ third baseman is hitting .160 on the season with one homer. He was starting at DH for the Yaquis de Obregon on Thursday.
Tirso Ornelas– (0-1)
Used as a pinch hitter for the second time this season, Ornelas went 0-for-1 on Thursday. He is surely going to get a star eventually for the Yaquis.
Australian winter league
Michael Gettys– (1-4) 2B, RBI, K
Gettys got a hit in his last at-bat for the Adelaide Bite on Thursday (early morning San Diego time) and was 1-for-4 with a double (video below). He was hitting cleanup and should have a great offensive year in Australia as the fields are small and the pitching is mediocre.

Puerto Rican winter league
Aldemar Burgos– (1-4)
Burgos is playing for the Gigantes de Carolina in Puerto Rico. The 21-year-old, right-handed hitter recorded a .658 OPS between Fort Wayne and Tri-City last year. He is a mid to lower level prospect, but still has youth on his side to develop into something more.
