Padres linked to Jarren Duran from Red Sox per report

There is no doubt the San Diego Padres need help in the outfield.
On Sunday, Gavin Sheets crashed into the outfield wall trying to make a play on a fly ball. He was removed from the game and is listed as day-to-day.
Sheet appears to be okay, but honestly, the Padres would rather have the big left-handed hitter play first base or DH during the game, Even though Sheets has more experience in the outfield during his major league career, the Padres would be wise to look elsewhere for options.
Internally, the team has Jason Heyward (hurt and on the injured list), Brandon Lockridge, Tyler Wade, and possibly Tirso Ornelas, who could play left field for the team. None of those four is a realistic option for a playoff-contending team. The Padres need to make a move.
Monday morning, Dennis Lin reported that the Padres have inquired about the services of Jarren Duran of the Boston Red Sox. The report also indicates that this is not the first time A.J. Preller has called the Red Sox about the outfielder.
A difficult June schedule could amplify multiple needs, but the Padres are again showing interest in Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran, sources tell @TheAthletic. San Diego’s hole in left field was obvious before Gavin Sheets crashed into a wall: https://t.co/nsQSMvyQGv

Boston is currently 29-32 on the season and 8.5 games behind the Yankees for first place in the AL East.
It is probably a little early to declare the Red Sox as sellers, but the Padres are surely keeping an eye on that fact.
Duran is having a down year, posting a .718 OPS in 60 games for Boston. He is 28 years old and enjoyed an incredible 2024 season, where he put up an impressive. .834 OPS in 160 games for the Red Sox and accumulated an 8.7 WAR on the year.
Duran is under control through the 2028 season. The Padres would need to pay a significant haul for the outfielder. The Red Sox need front-line pitching, but that is something the Padres are short on right now. San Diego can offer prospects, but it is unclear if that would secure a deal for Duran.
You have to figure Leodalis DeVries is off the table in trade talks. The Padres would also like to hold onto Ethan Salas, but virtually every other prospect is up for grabs as Preller intends to secure the roster for the upcoming playoff push.
The Padres need help in the outfield, and Duran makes sense. However, the cost may be too high for the Padres, considering they lack the necessary trade assets to secure a deal. Where there is smoke, there is always fire when it comes to the Padres, though. So never say no when it comes to A.J. Preller and the Padres.
Stay tuned, the Padres are on the prowl. Trades will happen.
