SAN DIEGO – The Padres have another arm making the trip to Atlanta for the Midsummer Classic
Three Padres are heading to the All-Star Game, and a fourth will be joining them on the trip.
Right-hander Robert Suarez has been named as an official reserve for the National League All-Star team, replacing Atlanta left-hander Chris Sale. Sale will not be participating on the active roster due to a rib fracture that has sidelined him since June 18. With Sale on the shelf, MLB has named Suarez as his replacement.

Suarez is having a quality season, despite some of the numbers not providing said impression.
As of the publication of this piece, Suarez has a 3.82 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 37.2 innings, locking down a league-leading 25 saves.

Suarez’s numbers are partly inflated due to his struggles in June, where he put up a 7.82 ERA in 10.1 innings. Most of that damage came in one infamous outing against the Diamondbacks, where Suarez allowed five runs while recording only one out. Robert Suarez has rebounded somewhat since then, as in his last seven appearances, he has locked down four saves in five save opportunities. His 2.34 FIP paints a more enlightening picture of his seasonal performance, and his 36.9% strikeout rate is the highest of his career in a full season (excluding his 2022 season).

His selection to the All-Star Team marks the second of his career after his nod last season. While he is not having the same quality of season, he nonetheless provides some additional firepower at the back end of a National League bullpen that is loaded with some of the league’s best relievers.
