Padres rally late, but fall to Red Sox 5-4
Petco Park- San Diego, California
On Friday, the San Diego Padres were outclassed by the Boston Red Sox.
An 11-0 drubbing was the result of the first game of the series. Chris Paddack was knocked around as he coughed up six runs early in the game.
With Dinelson Lamet on the mound in the second game of the series, the Padres looked to rebound and gain some respect from the visiting Bean Towners. Lamet pitched well in the game but still gave up four earned runs in five innings. The right-handed pitcher struck out five in the game as he threw 88 total pitches. He did not factor in the decision, but he has pitched well since coming back from Tommy John surgery. Lamet now has a 4.30 ERA on the season in nine games. He could be a huge factor in 2020 for the Padres.
Eric Hosmer homered for the 19th time on the season, but the first baseman struck out in the 7th inning with the bases loaded and two outs and also struck out with the tying run on second base in the 9th. Luis Urias went 2-for-3 on the day, driving in a run and scoring another run. He now has a .204 average on the season after a horrendous start to his 2019. Offensively, the team only managed seven hits in the game.
After Lamet exited, three relief pitcher threw well out of the pen. Andres Munoz, Matt Strahm, and Craig Stammen hurled three innings of scoreless ball, striking out three batters. Munoz was clocked as high as 101 mph with his fastball and has a 1.65 ERA so far in his rookie season.
Kirby Yates has been nearly perfect this season. The NL All-Star came on in a tie game late for the Padres, trying to hold the lead. Brock Holt jumped on the first pitch he saw from Yates in the 9th inning and homered over the right-field fence putting Boston up 4-3. The moment ignited the Red Sox fans at Petco Park who were mostly quiet throughout the night. Yates walked a tightrope through the 9th inning only allowing the one run, but the damage had been done already.
In the bottom of the 9th inning, the Padres got a runner on with one out as Ty France walked on four pitches. Wil Myers pinch ran for the SDSU alum and advanced to second on a wild pitch. But Brandon Workman got Josh Naylor and Eric Hosmer swinging to end the threat. The Padres are now ten games under the .500 mark.
The third game of the set will be on Sunday, as Joey Lucchesi will face Brian Johnson and the Boston Red Sox in a 1:10 game.

Sorry to say we all expected way too much from the Padres this year. They are no closer to playing after the regular season then they were last year. It really is sad because San Diego fans have had no real sports in this town for over two decades, and next year there will probably be some reason why we will all have to wait until 2021. I, at one time was a San Diego Rockets fan, a San Diego Conquistador fan, a San Diego Clipper fan, a San Diego Mariner fan, and most recently a San Diego Charger fan. I guess I should have been a San Diego Socker fan but for some reason soccer was a sport I did not play growing up. San Diego Sports are flat out depressing.
