Padres EVT Podcast: Episode 87 with Mike Rosenbaum of MLB pipeline
The EVT Podcast is back and we bring you Mike Rosenbaum of MLB pipeline, fresh off the website’s new rankings.
Guess who was ranked #1 in all of major league baseball. Yes, that’s right. Your San Diego Padres.
This Padres’ farm system is blossoming like never before and the team finally seems destined to pull out of the funk they have been in for seemingly ever. A.J. Preller has done well to overhaul the system. There is talent at every single level of the farm.
We discuss virtually every player on the list (a few were missed) with Mike as we get an impression from him about the Friars.
Mike has a great feel for the system and is very impressed with the talent. He makes that quite clear as we talk.
We asked about David Bednar and the thought process in making him a member of this exclusive club. There are some notable names left off the list like Mason House, Franmil Reyes, Brad Wieck, Hansel Rodriguez, Jordy Barley, Reggie Lawson, and Justin Lopez. But that is only because the Padres’ system is so loaded. Each of the “snubs” could easily make the transition onto the list in 2018.
Edward Olivares is an interesting player to talk about. Mike does the Blue Jays list for MLB pipeline and tells us that he would have been right around a top 10 prospect on their list. A.J. Preller did well in securing this young man and Mike likes the upside of Olivares. He believes that the kid is just starting to figure it out.
We talk about Jorge Ona, Mason Thompson, Gabriel Arias, and Hudson Potts with Mike as he gives us info on each young player.
Franchy Cordero is an interesting subject, as we all brainstorm about his future in the league. We would all love to see him get regular playing time as he is an exciting player to watch play the game of baseball. Only time will tell.
Mike gives us a breakdown on each of the players in the top 5. Michel Baez, Cal Quantrill, Luis Urias, Mackenzie Gore, and Fernando Tatis are the names on the list and each has a bright future in the league. Mike was really pumped talking about the system. You get a sense from speaking to him that he knows the Padres are going to be a solid young team.
This was an excellent conversation. We hope you enjoy it.

Rosenbaum, Rosenbaum, Rosenbaum!!! What a great listen. Hearing an “outsider” so high on Padres prospects and their chances of contributing at the Major League level so soon is exciting. It makes the Hosmer signing make so much more sense. If Tatis, Urias, Quantrill and Luchessi can all be up for 2019, then the investment in Hosmer’s leadership and ability on the field shows the foresight that Preller and Co. have.
Thanks for all the work you guys put into these podcasts and the guests you are able to bring on. Pretty soon you’ll be chatting and we’ll be listening about Padres success at Petco, not just in Minor League parks all over the country.
