Chihuahuas lost 14-7 in Game 1

Luis Gutierrez – 3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 2 K (61 pitchers – 41 strikes)
El Paso saw a 5-5 game get away in the middle innings, losing by a 14-7 final. Luis Gutierrez’s final start of the season was a tough one, as the left-hander allowed five runs in three innings. Gutierrez struck out two and walked two, with four of seven outs in play coming on the ground. Gutierrez got whiffs on 34% of swings, but seven of 13 balls in play registered over 95 mph. Sean Boyle threw a scoreless fourth before the ball was handed to Logan Gillaspie after the rain delay. Gillaspie allowed two runs in two innings. Jason Adam’s latest rehab outing was the stuff of nightmares, as the right-hander threw one-third of an inning with four runs allowed. Garrett Hawkins threw 2.1 innings of three-run baseball in relief, striking out three.
Anthony Vilar had three hits, reaching base in all four plate appearances. Vilar hit two doubles, and the Chihuahuas as a team hit five doubles. Nick Pratto went 2-for-4 with two extra-base hits, including a triple. Pratto drove in two runs. Mason McCoy, Carlos Rodriguez, and Miguel Andujar all drove in one run without the benefit of a hit, and Marcos Castanon scored two runs. Rosman Verdugo and Bryce Johnson each scored two runs.

Mason McCoy – 3-for-3, Three Singles, Two Runs Scored
Nick Solak – 1-for-3, Single, RBI
Jhony Brito – 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (32 pitches – 24 strikes)
El Paso and Oklahoma City were tied at 1-1 going into the fifth inning, but the Comets scored three runs against Brent Honeywell to swipe the win away. Jhony Brito started for the Chihuahuas, throwing two scoreless innings. Brito struck out two, walking none. Evan Fitterer threw two innings of one-run baseball, with the lone run being an unearned run. Fitterer walked three, but lowered his ERA to 4.06. Brent Honeywell faced eight batters in one inning, walking four and allowing three runs. Hunter Stratton struck out one batter in two innings of scoreless relief.
Mason McCoy hit three singles in the contest, scoring two runs. Nick Solak’s RBI single in the first inning scored McCoy from third base. Victor Duarte and Mason McCoy each drew a walk in the fifth inning, with Duarte scoring on a base hit by Bryce Johnson. McCoy scored a run on a passed ball, but El Paso failed to capitalize on a two-on, two-out situation that same inning. El Paso had a chance to tie the game in the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but left-hander Garrett McDaniels retired Nick Solak and Gage Workman to end the game.
