In the Padres’ minor league system, five regular-season games were played on Saturday, with Padres affiliates finishing 2-3 on the day.

These are their game stories.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 8-1 vs Sacramento) (28-28 on the season)

Clay Dungan – 1-for-4, Home Run

Mike Brosseau – 1-for-4, Double

Omar Cruz – 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K (57 pitches – 36 strikes)

An efficient start from Omar Cruz was not enough for the Chihuahuas to secure a win, as the relief corps allowed eight unanswered runs in the loss. Cruz had a borderline dominant outing, tossing four innings and scattering two hits and a walk. The left-hander struck out six batters, recording half his outs via the K. Cruz has pitched in relief and as a starter, and these shorter starts indicate the Padres look at him as an emergency starter for their big league team, as well as an arm who can provide long relief as well. Miguel Cienfuegos was charged with the loss, allowing two runs in 0.1 innings, and Jared Kollar came on for long relief, tossing 2.2 innings and surrendering three home runs. Kollar’s struggles have come as his cutter’s shape and efficiency has regressed, and considering his high release point, there could be some mechanical issues the right-hander and the team’s staff are looking to work on to get his stuff back on track.

The first batter of the game gave the impression of a successful game ahead, as Clay Dungan led off the game with a solo home run off Sacramento starter Trevor McDonald. However, the homer by Dungan was more of an apparition than a tone-setter. The Chihuahuas’ offense had no bite after that, as the team amassed six total hits and did not score after the first. Trenton Brooks had a pair of singles in the loss, and Mike Brosseau hit a double as part of a 1-for-4 day. Forrest Wall had two singles in three trips to the plate, with both Jack Mathey and Nate Mondou drawing walks in the loss.

San Antonio Missions (Lost 3-2 in 10 innings vs Arkansas) (27-23 on the season)

Marcos Castanon – 1-for-4, Game-Tying Home Run

Moises Gomez – 1-for-4, RBI Single

Braden Nett – 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R (1 ER), 4 BB, 4 K (57 pitches – 33 strikes)

Return of the Nett! That’s right, Braden Nett was back on the mound after missing his last start, pitching on a pitch count. Nett allowed two runs, one earned, in 2.2 innings, walking and striking out four batters. There was clearly a bit of rust for the right-hander, but his stuff remained as electric as it has been this season. The Missions’ bullpen pitched valiantly, even without one of their top arms in Bradgley Rodriguez (who made his MLB debut). Eduarniel Nunez and Jake Higginbotham had the strongest outings, with Nunez striking out five in two innings. Higginbotham struck out three of seven batters faced. Manuel Castro allowed the walk-off single in the tenth inning, taking his first loss of the season.

The lineup battled against right-hander Dylan File, tagging the Travelers starter for two runs in six innings of work. Moises Gomez got the Missions their first run on an RBI single, driving in his 23rd run of the season. Devin Ortiz reached base three times, twice via the walk, and Romeo Sanabria had yet another game with a base hit. Marcos Castanon capped off an impressive May with a game-tying home run in the sixth inning. Despite the individual performances, the team went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, stranding the go-ahead run in the tenth.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 6-2 vs Great Lakes) (25-25 on the season)

Oswaldo Linares – 1-for-2, Single, Three RBI

Leo De Vries – 1-for-5, RBI Single

Isaiah Lowe – 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K (88 pitches – 55 strikes)

The TinCaps’ offense scored six unanswered runs to win 6-2 against the Great Lakes Loons. Facing Loons starter Patrick Copen, the TinCaps were held scoreless over four innings against the right-hander. The team fared much better against the Loons’ bullpen, as Oswaldo Linares turned a second-and-third, two-out situation into a tie game with an RBI single. Command issues from reliever Sean Linan allowed the go-ahead run to score on a wild pitch, with Leo De Vries cashing in another baserunner with an RBI single of his own. Ethan Long and Linares added on to the lead in the seventh inning, with Long hitting an RBI single and Linares pitching in with a sac fly.

Isaiah Lowe had a strong start on the mound. Despite not finishing five innings, Lowe held the potent Loons lineup to two runs on four hits, with Logan Wagner being the only batter to drive in runs for Great Lakes. Lowe has struck out ten combined batters over his last two starts, and if he is able to keep his command in the zone and limit walks, he can find his groove on the mound to return to his dominant 2024 form. Josh Mallitz was nails out of the bullpen, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Mallitz is emerging as a reliable relief option for the TInCaps, with 35 strikeouts to 11 walks in 29 innings this season. Garrett Hawkins and Tyson Neighbors combined to toss two scoreless innings to end the game, sealing a win.

I'd like this amount to

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 6-1 vs Stockton) (23-27 on the season)

Lamar King Jr – 3-for-4, Double, Two Runs Scored

B.Y. Choi – 2-for-4, Single, Two RBI

Abraham Parra – 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K (66 pitches – 43 strikes)

Lake Elsinore can score in many ways, and the team exhibited that approach on Saturday. Lamar King Jr had himself a big day at the plate, finishing with three hits and a double while scoring two runs. Yendry Rojas was among four players with multi-hit games, and Rojas singled in a run in the fourth inning. Ryan Wilson created some havoc on the bases, stealing second base and prompting a throwing error that allowed King Jr to score the team’s opening salvo. B.Y. Choi had a pair of base hits in the game, driving in two runs. Kavares Tears singled twice in the game and also walked, reaching base three times. Victor Figueroa did not play in the game.

Abraham Parra earned his first Single-A win, tossing five innings of one-run baseball. Parra allowed just one hit in his outing, walking one batter. The right-hander pitched no-hit baseball into the fifth inning, when the Ports scored their lone run on an RBI double. The double by Jesus Fernandez would be the Ports’ lone hit of the game. Bernard Jose tossed three scoreless innings in relief of Parra, striking out three. While left-hander Ruben Salinas walked two in the ninth, he struck out one batter and tossed a scoreless ninth.

ACL Padres (Lost 13-4 vs ACL Royals) (5-17 on the season)

Luis De Leon – 2-for-5, RBI Single

Emil Turbi – 2-for-4, Two Singles, Run Scored

Ruben Galindo – 0.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 0 K

In a flash-bang-wallop situation, the ACL Padres were down 7-0 after one and a half innings, ultimately losing 13-4 against the ACL Royals. Ruben Galindo, he of a blistering high-90s fastball, got torched, allowing three runs in 0.1 innings. Jimmy Reyes relieved the rehabbing Galindo, and he didn’t fare much better, allowing four runs in 1.2 innings. While Luis Maracara allowed three runs in 3.1 innings of long relief, he struck out seven of 13 batters faced, an impressive feat for the young pitcher. Jordan Valenzuela tossed the final two innings, allowing two runs.

The Padres’ offense was cold, a stark contrast to the Arizona weather. Luis De Leon had one of the team’s two RBIs of the night with an RBI single. Kevin Hacen and Emil Turbi also finished with multi-hit games, and Turbi scored one of the team’s four runs. Kale Fountain was hitless in the game, and Jesmaylin Arias walked twice in the game. Gustavo Marquez drove in a run on a groundout, and catcher Alcides Hernandez pushed a run across on a double-play grounder. Eguy Rosario was 1-for-4 with a double while also recording an outfield assist.
