MiLB

Padres affiliates went 2-2 on Sunday.
Here is our daily recap of games played.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 8-7 vs Round Rock) (23-28 on the season)
Will Wagner – 1-for-3, Three-Run Home Run
Mason McCoy – 3-for-5, Three Singles, RBI

JP Sears – 5 IP, 10 H, 7 R (6 ER), 1 BB, 7 K (89 pitches – 58 strikes)
Left-hander JP Sears gave the Chihuahuas five innings to end the week, but his five frames were all but quiet. Though the left-hander fanned seven batters, Round Rock got to him for 10 hits and seven runs. Six of the seven runs against Sears were earned, and more concerningly, 50% of batted balls against Sears registered exit velocities above 95 mph. Logan Gillaspie fired off a scoreless inning, issuing one walk. Ethan Routzahn continued to pitch steady, delivering 1.2 innings of scoreless relief despite issuing three walks. David Morgan stranded two inherited runners in the eighth, and returned to the mound for the ninth. Morgan allowed a full-count double against Gilberto Celestino, then Diego Castillo inside-outed a curveball to right-field in front of the charging Samad Taylor. Taylor’s throw to the plate was not close, cut off and relayed by Nick Solak. The relay was late, and the Express led 8-7. Morgan then induced a double play, but El Paso again trailed.
It’s Diego vu all over again ‼️

Will Wagner homered for the second consecutive game, this time sending a 92 mph fastball to the Tequila Cazadores Cantina in right field. The left-handed hitting infielder drew two walks as well, and now has an .821 OPS in his 18 games played this season. Mason McCoy hit three singles in the game, driving in one run and scoring one as well. Samad Taylor and Carlos D. Rodriguez each hit a double as part of 2-for-5 efforts; Taylor reached base in every game of the series, going 11-for-31 (.355). Marcos Castanon hit two singles and drove in an RBI; the former UC Santa Barbara Gaucho hit .400 against the Express this week, and is hitting .354 this month.
Started it yesterday. Still can’t stop him. ?

San Antonio Missions (Lost 8-1 vs Frisco) (17-28 on the season)
Braedon Karpathios – 1-for-3, Single, Walk
Kai Roberts – 1-for-3, SIngle, Stolen Base
Miguel Mendez – 2.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 5 K (52 pitches – 30 strikes)
Right-hander Miguel Mendez met a goal of 50-55 pitches in his third start off the injured list, pitching into the third inning. Mendez struck out five batters in 2.1 innings of work, allowing three earned runs. Mendez walked two and allowed four hits, with two of four hits going for extra bases. The right-hander threw 57.6% of his offerings for strikes, but he did not have the best command of his slider in his start. Both run-scoring doubles against Mendez came on sliders up in the strike zone. Omar Cruz threw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts. The Hermosillo, Mexico-born left-hander has allowed one run in his last three appearances (8.1 IP) with 14 strikeouts to five walks. Johan Moreno was charged with five runs in two-thirds of an inning, including a three-run home run. Josh Mallitz threw 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball, and Andrew Moore picked up three outs on eight straight strikes.

The Missions’ offense struggled to get much going, failing to record an extra-base hit. All five Missions hits came against Frisco starter Dylan MacLean, who held the team scoreless in six innings. Romeo Sanabria hit a single and stole his fourth base of the season. Sanabria also drew two walks, reaching base three times. Braedon Karpathios hit a single and drew a walk in the game, while Carson Tucker had one hit in four at-bats. Tirso Ornelas’ lone single of the game set up a run-scoring opportunity, as Sanabria scored on a wild pitch. Kai Roberts went 1-for-3 with a single and his team-leading 14th stolen base of the season. Roberts was 5-for-13 with four walks in the series, stealing four bases. Ethan Salas was held hitless in the game.
Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 6-3 vs Dayton) (22-23 on the season)
Alex McCoy – 3-for-4, Home Run, Double, Four RBI
Jonathan Vastine – 1-for-4, Home Run, RBI
Jamie Hitt – 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 3 K (83 pitches – 54 strikes)
Fort Wayne used slugging (and plenty of it) en route to a win against the Dragons. Sporting some rather interesting dinosaur-inspired jerseys, Fort Wayne’s offense came alive with a roar in the first inning. Alex McCoy blasted a 422-foot home run to tie the game at two runs apiece. McCoy had quite a day at the dish, finishing a triple shy of the cycle and driving in four runs. Jonathan Vastine tied the game with a solo home run in the fifth inning, his third of the season. Vastine’s home run was his first career homer at Parkview Field. Alex McCoy’s 16th double of the season gave the TinCaps a lead, and Kavares Tears gave the team some insurance with a ground-ball single to score McCoy. Zach Evans hit two singles and scored a run, while Justin DeCriscio hit a double and scored as well.

Jamie Hitt continues to make strides as a starter, as the left-hander threw five innings of three-run baseball. While Hitt allowed three runs, he at one point retired seven of eight batters in a row. The left-hander labored through a 28-pitch first inning, in which the Dragons scored twice. However, the left-hander generated 13 swings and misses, which tied for fifth in all High-A games on Sunday. Hitt has allowed two earned runs or fewer in six of eight games this season. Kleiber Olmedo pitched two scoreless innings in relief, earning the win. Tucker Musgrove worked around two singles to pitch a scoreless eighth inning, striking out two. Clay Edmondson’s dominance out of the bullpen continued, as the right-hander stranded two baserunners in a scoreless ninth, securing a series-finale win.
Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 10-3 vs Visalia) (25-20 on the season)
Bradley Frye – 2-for-4, Double, Four RBI
Conner Westenburg – 1-for-4, Double, Two RBI
Carlos Medina – 4.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R (1 ER), 2 BB, 1 K (69 pitches – 43 strikes)
Carlos Medina bounced back from his last start with 4.2 innings of two-run baseball. The right-hander pitched into the fifth inning, allowing one earned run while picking up one strikeout. Medina has not picked up the high strikeout tallies of his peers, but makes up for it by generating subpar contact. Carson Swilling threw 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball, striking out three and walking three. Swilling now has a 2.65 ERA and 30.6% strikeout rate in 17 innings, despite a 20% walk rate (15 walks vs 75 batters faced). Vicarte Domingo and Daichi Moriki each pitched a scoreless inning, with Moriki working around a pair of walks. Will Koger allowed a run on two hits in the ninth, but closed out the win regardless.
Ryan Wideman reached base to open the game, scoring on a bases-loaded walk by Bradley Frye. Frye had a strong performance in the series finale, driving in four runs on a walk, double and single. Jorge Quintana hit a double as part of a multi-hit game, driving in one run. Truitt Madonna also hit an RBI double, drawing three walks in the game. Madonna is likely to see more time behind the dish if Ty Harvey misses time after taking a swing off the glove on Saturday. Kerrington Cross hit a solo home run in the game, his fourth of the campaign. Conner Westenburg drove in two runs on a double, and is slugging higher in May than he did in April despite a 61.2% ground ball rate on the season. Ryan Wideman drove in a run as well, hitting an RBI double. Jose Verdugo stole two bases and scored two runs, and the Storm went 5-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the win.
