Padres affiliates went 2-3 on Saturday.

Here is our daily recap of games played.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 19-7 vs Albuquerque) (15-17 on the season)

Nick Schnell – 2-for-5, Home Run, Two RBI

Clay Dungan – 2-for-4, Double, Three RBI

Sean Boyle – 3.2 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 4 K (75 pitches – 49 strikes)

The Chihuahuas must be glad the series in Albuquerque is coming to a close after the past two games. Albuquerque scored 19 against the Chihuahuas, as starter Sean Boyle was chased in the fourth inning. Boyle allowed seven runs on six hits and two walks, including one home run. Boyle struck out four batters, departing down 6-5. Misael Tamarez had his first PCL blowup outing, as he was charged with five runs (three earned) in one-third of an inning. The right-hander’s slider did not have the same depth as usual, partly due to the altitude. Logan Gillaspie allowed three unearned runs in an inning of relief. Yuki Matsui threw two innings of one-run baseball in what is likely his final rehab appearance. Alek Jacob was charged with three runs in the eighth inning.

El Paso, believe it or not, took a 5-0 lead early. With two on and two outs in the first inning, Nate Mondou singled to left field, scoring the first run of the game. Nick Schnell added another single for a 2-0 advantage, and Clay Dungan broke the inning open with a bases-clearing double. Outside of the five-run outburst, not much came their way in terms of offense. Mason McCoy (who finished with three hits) had an RBI double in the seventh, and Nick Schnell launched a solo homer in the eighth, but it was far too little too late in the Chihuahuas’ second straight blowout loss.

San Antonio Missions (Lost 5-4 vs Tulsa) (6-20 on the season)

Ethan Salas – 1-for-4, Home Run, Walk

Luis Verdugo  1-for-2, Double, Sac Fly

Ian Koenig – 3.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R (0 ER), 0 BB, 2 K (81 pitches – 50 strikes)

San Antonio and Tulsa had another wild west standoff, with the Drillers pulling away 5-4. Ethan Salas was back to Ethan Salas things, as the Missions catcher launched his fifth home run of the season. Salas has already surpassed his home run total from 2024 with Fort Wayne, and is more than halfway to setting a career-high. Salas’ home run traveled 389 feet at an exit velocity of 100 mph. Luis Verdugo drove in two runs in the game, as he doubled to score Leandro Cedeno in the fourth and hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Carson Tucker drove in the fourth and final run of the game with a sacrifice fly of his own. Braedon Karpathios had two hits once again and is hitting .352 this series.

On the mound, Ian Koenig threw 3.2 innings, allowing five unearned runs. The second inning was notable due to the four runs allowed thanks to an error. With two on and one out, Frank Rodriguez lined a ball to right field that glanced off Braedon Karpathios’ glove. One run scored on the play, and two batters later, Josue De Paula hit a three-run home run to give the Drillers a 4-0 lead. Koenig faced more traffic in the fourth, and a two-out RBI single by Kendall George ended his day. The Missions’ bullpen was lights out the rest of the way. Josh Mallitz struck out two in 1.1 innings, and Andrew Moore fanned two in one inning of work. Michael Flynn and Sadrac Franco each threw one inning, with Franco recording two strikeouts in a scoreless eighth.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 7-6 vs South Bend) (11-15 on the season)

Jack Costello – 1-for-3, Home Run, Two RBI

Lamar King Jr – 4-for-5, Four Singles, Run Scored

Jamie Hitt – 2.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R (2 ER), 3 BB, 4 K (76 pitches – 44 strikes)

Fort Wayne played a back-and-forth affair on Saturday, ultimately snatching a win with a two-run ninth inning. The TinCaps scored first on a solo home run by Jack Costello, his fourth of the season. Costello later scored Lamar King Jr on a sacrifice fly. After looking somewhat overmatched in his first season at High-A, Costello has made adjustments that allow him to make better contact at more optimal launch angles this season. Dylan Grego doubled and drove in a run, also scoring a run and walking twice. Jake Cunningham went 1-for-5 with a two-run single, also swiping a base in the win. Zach Evans had a 1-for-5 day, and Lamar King Jr hit four singles in five at-bats. It was King Jr’s first four-hit game since July 20 of last season. Kavares Tears had a single and two walks, while Alex McCoy reached base twice in the win.

Starter Jamie Hitt battled against a tough South Bend lineup, as he threw 76 pitches in just 2.1 innings of work. The left-hander struck out four while walking three. Despite the walks, Hitt allowed just three runs (two earned). Right-hander Will Varmette had a bounce-back outing after allowing two runs earlier in the week. Varmette pitched 1.2 innings of relief, stranding the bases loaded in the third inning with a big strikeout. Bernard Jose was not as fortunate in the sixth, as he allowed a game-tying two-run double to Drew Bowser, who struck out against Varmette with the bases loaded. Braian Salazar allowed one run in two innings of relief, striking out five batters. Salazar now has a 37.5% strikeout rate this season, and with a 12.5% walk rate, the strikeouts are so high that the walks can be managed. Kleiber Olmedo worked around a go-ahead walk in the eighth and ended the game on his signature, a double-play ball to seal the win.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 4-2 vs Ontario) (16-10 on the season)

Victor Duarte – 1-for-1, Go-Ahead Two-Run Double

Ryan Wideman – 1-for-5, RBI Triple

Tyler Schmitt – 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K (67 pitches – 43 strikes)

Lake Elsinore won a fourth consecutive game against Ontario, this time by a 4-2 final. Starting pitcher Tyler Schmitt was efficient and effective pitching in a starting role. The former Fighting Illini starter pitched five innings of scoreless baseball. Schmitt fanned six while walking one; it was a reversal of fortunes from his last appearance, as he was dialed into the zone and continuously made competitive offerings. His fastball-changeup-curveball combination did its job in the sequencing department, as he picked up 15 whiffs out of 43 strikes. The 15 whiffs were third in all of Single-A baseball on Saturday, oh, by the way. Right-hander Brandon Langley allowed two runs in two innings, striking out two. While the Saskatchewan native allowed only one hit, two walks gave the Buzzers the runners needed to tie the game. Carson Swilling pitched the final two innings of the gam, and was dominant. Swilling issued one walk and struck out one in his two frames, earning his first career save.

The Storm’s lineup didn’t serve their colloquial soup du jour (also known as the five-run inning), but they did not need to in a winning effort. Lake Elsinore scored first on an RBI triple for Ryan Wideman. It was Wideman’s third triple of the season, and he drove in his 22nd run of the season. Victor Duarte, who has seen more playing time with Ty Harvey on the injured list, drove in another run with a sacrifice fly. Truitt Madonna drew two walks in the game, and Justin DeCriscio finished 1-for-4 with a single. Both were on base in the eighth inning, when Duarte hit a double to score the go-ahead runs. Lake Elsinore drew nine walks in the win and has secured a series win going into the series finale.

ACL Padres (Lost 12-1 vs ACL Brewers) (0-1 on the season)

Luis De Leon – 1-for-2, Double, Two Walks

Jhojan Downer – 1-for-2, RBI Single, Two Walks

Adler Cecil – 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K

The Arizona Complex League season opened up on Saturday, but the ACL Padres dropped their season opener by a 12-1 final. Starting pitcher Adler Cecil (Temecula’s own) threw two hitless innings, striking out five of six batters faced. The left-hander spent 2025 on the full-season injured list, but he is back on the mound and looking sharper than ever. Dane Lais was charged with the loss, as the former 13th-round pick allowed six runs while recording two outs. Yoesmerli Beltre allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning, and undrafted free agent Cal Riehl allowed three unearned runs in 2.1 innings. Riehl picked up two strikeouts, the first of his professional career. Jordan Valenzuela and Florangel Vasquez struck out four in 3.1 innings of relief.

The Padres’ offense was led by both new and returning faces. Luis De Leon and Jhojan Downer reached base three times each, with Downer driving in the team’s lone run on an RBI single. De Leon had one of the team’s two doubles, drawing two walks as well. Yimy Tovar reached base on a single and a walk in the game, and Fabian Alcantara tallied his first ACL hit. Jhoan De La Cruz went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his first Complex League game.
