San Diego Padres affiliates went 3-2 on Friday.

Here is a recap of the night’s events.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 12-4 vs Las Vegas) (22-21 on the season)

Tirso Ornelas – 3-for-5, Double, Three RBI

Luis Campusano – 2-for-4, Three-Run Home Run

Kyle Hart – 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R (0 ER), 3 BB. 4 K (83 pitches – 47 strikes)

El Paso’s offense showed out, slugging four home runs and racking up 15 hits in a win over Las Vegas. Tirso Ornelas had his strongest day at the plate since his return to El Paso, driving in three runs on three hits and scoring once in the win. Luis Campusano continued his recent power surge with a three-run home run. Campusano is 6-for-15 in the series with three homers, so one could say he likes hitting in Las Vegas. Trenton Brooks slugged his first home run of the month in the fifth inning, ending a 25-game homerless drought. Brooks had a blistering start to the season, but has only hit .156 with a .477 OPS in May. Clay Dungan had three base hits out of the leadoff spot, and Rodolfo Duran homered and had two hits, rounding out the lineup.

Kyle Hart tossed five innings of one-run baseball on the mound, striking out four. Hart now has a 1.84 ERA in three starts with the Chihuahuas, but has averaged just under five innings a start. Hart’s performance has been strong on the surface, but he has allowed eleven walks in 14.2 innings at Triple-A, including three in his start Friday. With Stephen Kolek pitching strong innings in his first three starts, Randy Vasquez becoming Houdini, and Yu Darvish on the way back, it is not yet known if, or when, Hart will receive another big league look. Jason Blanchard allowed three runs in 1.1 innings, and the duo of Raul Brito and Harold Chirino closed out the game with 2.2 scoreless innings.

San Antonio Missions (Won 14-11 vs Midland) (18-19 on the season)

Brandon Valenzuela – 5-for-6, Two RBI

Moises Gomez – 4-for-6, Double, RBI

Henry Baez – 5.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R (0 ER), 3 BB, 4 K (95 pitches – 62 strikes)

San Antonio scored eleven runs throughout the game’s first four Innings, culminating in a 14-11 win. Multiple players finished with multi-hit games, with Brandon Valenzuela posting a 5 hit game. While all of Valenzuela’s hits were singles, the switch-hitting catcher continues to show an impressive ability to make contact and put the ball in play, something he struggled with during his Triple-A promotion last season. Outfielder Moises Gomez had four hits in the game, driving in a run. Every member of the missions starting lineup registered at least one hit in the game, with the top six members of the lineup having a multi-hit game. Marcos Castanon drove in three runs and is now hitting .555 in the series. The team went 10-for-20 with runners in scoring position, but left 10 runners stranded.

It was another start where the final line is not indicative of the performance for right-hander Henry Baez. One of the Padres’ rising pitching prospects going into the season, Baez continues to be serviceable in the San Antonio rotation, pitching 5.2 innings and striking out four batters. Baez was charged with four runs, all of which were unearned, and continues to get plenty of ground balls. San Antonio ultimately wound up using six relievers to cover the final 3.1 innings of the ball game, with no reliever managing to go unscathed in a full inning of work. Andrew Moore walked three batters in 0.1 innings, two of whom ultimately came around to score. The recently acquired right-hander is still getting his footing with San Antonio, and clearly, the team likes what they have seen from him, hence the trade. Bradgley Rodriguez tossed 1.1 innings in the game, allowing three runs, while Jose Espada picked up the save, tossing 0.2 scoreless frames

I'd like this amount to

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 8-4 vs West Michigan) (20-17 on the season)

Rosman Verdugo – 2-for-4, RBI Single

Leo De Vries – 2-for-4, Double, Run Scored

Miguel Mendez – 3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K (52 pitches – 37 strikes)

The TinCaps’ offense put up one run in the first eight innings before plating three in the ninth, falling to West Michigan by an 8-4 final. Rosman Verdugo and Leo De Vries had multi-hit games, each finishing 2-for-4. De Vries had another double and came around to score one of the team’s four runs. Rosman Verdugo had two hits, including an RBI single early in the game. Verdugo has excelled in the power department this season that it can be easy to forget about his hit tool, which was highly touted as recently as last season. Nerwilian Cedeno drove in two runs in the ninth inning on an RBI single, and Jake Snider finished 1-for-4 with an RBI groundout.

Miguel Mendez showcased impressive stuff in his second High-A start, striking out five batters in just three innings of work. Mendez was sitting at 95 mph on his heater on average, topping out at 98 mph. Mendez showed a more well-rounded pitch mix, with a sweeper in the mid-80s with impressive diagonal movement, as well as a hard slider/cutter at 91, along with a developing changeup in the high-80s. Mendez remains a raw prospect, but he could merit some Top 30 consideration down the line. Josh Mallitz had another impressive long relief outing, striking out five in three innings. Nick Wissman was knocked around for four runs in two innings. The submarine right-hander pitched well to open the season, but has been hit to the tune of a 22.50 ERA in three outings in May.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 6-3 vs Fresno) (16-21 on the season)

Zach Evans – 2-for-4, Run Scored

Ryan Jackson – 3-for-4, RBI Single

Abraham Parra – 2.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 2 BB,. 2 K (59 pitches – 36 strikes)

Making his Single-A debut, right-hander Abraham Parra was in for a rude welcome, as the Fresno offense knocked him around for nine hits and six runs in only 2.1 innings of work. The right-hander was mostly in the zone, but Fresno batters worked counts effectively and forced him to beat them in the zone. It did not happen, as a three-run homer in the first inning effectively set the tone for the rest of the game. Parra was able to punch out two batters and looks to build off this start. Braian Salazar, who came on in relief of Parra, got seven outs in relief, striking out five in the process. Tucker Musgrove and Bernard Jose each tossed two scoreless innings in the game, keeping the Fresno offense at bay.

The Storm offense did manage to put up runs after Parra’s early exit. A wild pitch from Fresno starter Jackson Cox allowed the Storm to score their first run of the game, and Ryan Jackson singled in the team’s second run. Jackson finished the game 3-for-4, and Zach Evans joined him with a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored. Evans scores his run later in the game, as a sixth inning wild pitch allowed him to score. Kasen Wells singled and scored a run, and Kaden Hollow had a base hit of his own. The team finished with eight hits, but were 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

ACL Padres (Won 2-1 vs ACL Royals) (3-7 on the season)

Yimy Tovar – 1-for-3, RBI Single

Jesmaylin Arias – 1-for-2, RBI Walk

Winyer Chourio – 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K

The strong pitching of Winyer Chourio and Elvis Reyes, paired with a two-run first inning, led to an ACL Padres win. Yimy Tovar continues to hit well in his opening season at the ACL season, finishing 1-for-3 with an RBI single to give his team a 1-0 lead. Jesmaylin Arias finished 1-for-2, but his bases-loaded was the real deciding factor in the game. Carlos Rodriguez had two base hits in three at-bats, and Victor Figueroa went 1-for-2 with a walk.

As mentioned earlier, Winter Chourio pitched a strong and efficient outing. While he allowed six hits and a homer over five innings, he kept the ball in the yard mostly, with seven outs recorded coming on ground balls. Chourio was strong in the DSL last season, and this outing gave the continental audience a glimpse into what had DSL scouts raving last season. Elvis Reyes, also in his first stateside season, closed out the game with two scoreless innings, earning his first professional save.
