Padres Down on the Farm: June 5 (Bateman strong for LE/Paplham rehabs in FW)

Storm

Padres minor league affiliates went 3-3 on Thursday.
Here is a recap of the games played.
Roster Roundup
The Padres made two roster moves before Thursday’s games. First, right-hander Jared Kollar was reassigned from Triple-A El Paso to Double-A San Antonio. Next, left-hander Jay Groome, who had been on the restricted list since last June, serving a suspension for gambling, was non-tendered by the team. The team might look into re-signing the left-hander on a minor league deal, but it is unknown as of the publishing of this article.
With his one-year suspension ending today, the Padres are non-tendering Jay Groome. Groome is out of minor-league options.

Mike Brosseau – 2-for-5, RBI Single
Kyle Hart – 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 4 K (81 pitches – 49 strikes)
Left-hander Kyle Hart took the mound for the Chihuahuas, allowing four runs in five innings of work. Hart did continue to get whiffs on his sweeper, with batters whiffing on 50% of swings against the pitch. Bradgley Rodriguez made his Triple-A debut, allowing one run in one inning of work on a double off the bat of former Padre Austin Nola. Ron Marinaccio allowed one run in 0.2 innings of work, and saw his sweeper velocity hit a season-high 89,7 mph.
Tim Locastro continued to hit well, finishing 3-for-3 with three singles, two RBI, and one stolen base. Brosseau was one of three Chihuahuas batters with multi-hit games. Mike Brosseau went 2-for-5 with a late-inning RBI single, helping the Chihuahuas rally late. Bryce Johnson also had two singles in the game and is now 6-for-14 to start the month. Trenton Brooks drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and Nate Mondou scored two runs in the game. Tirso Ornelas drew two walks in the game, but was thrown out at the plate in the ninth inning, trying to score on Brosseau’s single. San Antonio Missions (Won 4-2 vs Midland) (29-25 on the season)
Anthony Vilar – 1-for-3, Two-RBI Double
Francisco Acuna – 1-for-4, Single, RBI
Luis Patino – 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R (0 ER), 0 BB, 3 K (60 pitches – 41 strikes)
San Antonio rode strong performances from three of their pitchers en route to a 4-2 win over Midland. Luis Patino got the nod as the Missions’ starter, and he rattled off four innings, allowing only one unearned run. Patino struck out three batters while not walking a batter he faced. Patino has now made six starts this season, and while they add up to 17 innings, Patino has allowed only two earned runs this season and has struck out 15 batters in that span. Eduarniel Nunez earned the win with one inning of relief, and Enmanuel Pinales tossed the final four innings, striking out five. Pinales has been working in tandem with Patino partly due to the Missions’ rotation depth, and also to manage his innings.

Francisco Acuna put the Missions ahead with an RBI single of his own. Acuna drove in a run and also scored a run in the ballgame. Moises Gomez, who had been 2-for-24 in his last eight games, had an RBI single to plate the Missions’ first run of the game. Devin Ortiz finished 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, while Brandon Valenzuela and Romeo Sanabria each had a single in the win.

On the mound, Jose Luis Reyes battled through 3.2 busy innings. The right-hander only struck out two while walking two in his time on the mound. Reyes allowed six hits and four runs, unable to hold the TinCaps’ lead at the time. Reyes has struck out 31 in 39 innings this season while walking 17, and has allowed too many baserunners in the early going, as his WHIP on the season sits at 1.79.

Cole Paplham was one of four relievers to pitch for Fort Wayne, and he fired off a scoreless inning thanks in part to his tantalizing sweeper. Eiker Huizi tossed a scoreless seventh, but allowed back-to-back doubles to open the eighth, which gave the Sky Carp a 5-4 lead. While Garrett Hawkins was able to end the inning with no further damage, the TinCaps would not be able to rally, sealing the game at 5-4, Beloit.

Victor Figueroa – 2-for-5, Two Doubles, Two RBI
Boston Bateman – 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K (78 pitches – 46 strikes)

In all seriousness, left-hander Boston Bateman was tough as nails on the mound, tossing five innings of one-run baseball. The left-hander punched out five Nuts batters while walking only one, getting whiffs on 27.3% of swings against. Bateman’s last three starts have been dominant, as he has punched out 26.3% of batters to the tune of a 1.93 ERA. The lineup did most of the talking for the Storm, as every member of the starting lineup reached base once. Victor Figueroa reached base twice on two doubles, driving in two runs and scoring a run himself. Ryan Jackson continues to be a menace out of the leadoff spot, as the Storm’s shortstop had two singles and drove in three runs in the game. Jackson has a four-game hitting streak and continues to be an on-base machine for the Storm. Ryan Wilson singled in two runs in the game as well, and B.Y. Choi reached base twice, once via the RBI single. Choi is 6-for-15 in his last four games, seeing time at middle infield, right field, and third base. Zach Evans reached base four times, three via the walk, and scored two runs in the win.
DSL Padres Gold (Lost 6-1 vs DSL Brewers Blue) (2-1 on the season)

De La Cruz wound up scoring the team’s lone run on a wild pitch. Darian Castillo singled in a run in the third inning, but Castillo’s biggest hit of the day came in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Castillo grounded a ball to third for an infield single, and a throwing error allowed two runs to score. Abraham Bastidas reached base on a single and a walk, scoring runs both times he reached base.
