Padres minor league affiliates went 4-3 on Thursday.

Here is a recap of the teams’ games played, along with a brief roster roundup.

Roster Roundup

  • Right-handers Jose Luis Reyes and Eiker Huizi were placed on the 7-day injured list by Fort Wayne TinCaps (High-A).
  • Outfielder Sebastian Pena was transferred from DSL Padres Brown from DSL Padres Gold

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 12-3 vs Round Rock) (34-32 on the season)

Clay Dungan – 2-for-4, Three-RBI Double

Tim Locastro – 1-for-4, Double

Omar Cruz – 5 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 2 K (74 pitches – 45 strikes)

El Paso suffered a blowout loss on the road in Round Rock, as the pitching staff allowed 12 runs. Omar Cruz started for the Chihuahuas and allowed three hits and two walks in five innings. The downside was that two of the hits allowed were home runs, both coming in the first inning. After the first inning, Cruz retired the final 12 batters he faced. Miguel Cienfuegos allowed three runs in 0.2 innings of work. Eduarniel Nunez made his Chihuahuas debut and tossed a scoreless 1.1 innings, with his fastball looking unreal. Raul Brito was knocked around for five runs in one inning of work.

The lineup was mostly held in check by Express pitching, as the team would only score in one inning. Clay Dungan hit a three-run double in the fifth inning that accounted for all the scoring in the game for El Paso. Tim Locastro finished with a double in four at-bats. Nate Mondou, Yonathan Perlaza, and Forrest Wall had the team’s other hits in the game, all hitting a single. While the team finished with four walks, Dungan’s base hit was the only hit the team had with runners in scoring position. As a whole, El Paso was 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

San Antonio Missions (Won 11-3 vs Amarillo) (33-27 on the season)

Ripken Reyes – 3-for-4, Three-RBI Triple

Brandon Valenzuela – 2-for-5, Home Run, Three RBI

Braden Nett – 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 8 K (79 pitches – 61 strikes)

Right-hander Braden Nett made one of, if not his most dominant start of the season. Nett struck out eight batters while walking none, throwing 77% of his pitches for strikes. It was a season-high strike percentage for Nett, and the eight punchouts were also a season-high. Nett was really unhittable in the ballgame, as his fastball was reaching 97 mph in the sixth inning. Jose Geraldo escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning, putting up a scoreless frame. Andrew Moore tossed a scoreless inning in the eighth, and Sam Whiting was called on for the ninth, which he closed out with two strikeouts. The short stint did wonders for Whiting, as he topped out at 97.1 mph on his fastball, and his slider showed a stronger break than it did as a starter.

Speaking of Nett, EVT collaborator and Sideline Sports writer Austin Hartsfield had this to say regarding the Missions’ starter: Braden Nett put together one of the more impressive performances of the season tonight against Amarillo. It was a night that seemed like he had everything working, striking out guys that don’t typically strike out in the way they did tonight. Maintained his velocity well into his start, and the breaking stuff just continued to be effective. I walked away thoroughly impressed with what I saw from the Missions starter, despite Troy tagging him after Nett had struck him out three pitches in the at-bat before.

The Missions’ lineup was equally as impressive as the Missions’ arms’ velocities. Ripken Reyes encountered a case of deja vu, as he roped a bases-clearing triple for the second consecutive night, a Texas League first. Nerwilian Cedeno doubled to score Reyes, and Cedeno himself scored on the back end of a double steal. Brandon Valenzuela singled in Francisco Acuna to score the sixth run of not only the game, but also of the second inning for San Antonio. The game was more or less a rout from there onwards, as the Missions added on against Amarillo starter Logan Clayton. Devin Ortiz singled in a run in the fourth inning, and with two runners on, Romeo Sanabria doubled to score both Ortiz and Nerwilian Cedeno. After the Sod Poodles scored three runs in the fifth, San Antonio got back on the board with a deep home run by Brandon Valenzuela that reached the parking lot at Hodgetown Stadium.

San Antonio returns to action on Friday against Amarillo, with Victor Lizarraga taking the mound against Jose Cabrera. Here is a brief scouting report on Cabrera, again courtesy of Mr. Hartsfield:

Amarillo’s fast working right hander will be back on the hill for the Sod Poodles. Cabrera is one one of the three starters left after the recent promotions, sporting a 5.31 ERA  (4.16 FIP) over 57.2 innings in 11 starts for the Sod Poodles this season. Cabrera recently entered MLB Pipeline’s Top 30 Diamondbacks prospects, debuting at #25 following the graduation of Tim Tawa. The starter throws a litany of pitches including a mid 90s 4-seam fastball, a sinker that he tends to lean on in the same range of his 4-seam, a relatively new cutter that he loves throwing to left handed batters that’s around the upper 80s to low 90s, a slider that will be around the same speed as his cutter, the Sod Poodles only sweeper on the current roster in the mid 80s, and he rounds it out with a mid 80s changeup that will generate swings and misses. Cabrera hasn’t quite pitched to expectations in 2025, but there are flashes at times, including a 6.0 innings, 1 run start against Frisco on June 1st.

I'd like this amount to

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 10-1 vs South Bend) (29-31 on the season)

Jake Snider – 1-for-1, RBI Single

Oswaldo Linares – 1-for-2, Single, Walk

Miguel Mendez – 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K (74 pitches – 45 strikes)

Fort Wayne starter Miguel Mendez was again electric, striking out six in four innings of work. Mendez’s velocity was cooking, as he hit 100 mph on his fastball while sitting in the 96-98 realm early. Mendez got whiffs aplenty in the game, and the lone run against him came on a sacrifice fly off the bat of James Triantos. Mendez now has a 2.42 ERA in six High-A starts, and for an arm who is coming up on his Rule 5 eligibility, this season is a stride in the right direction. The TinCaps bullpen was walloped, as Bodi Rascon and Luis German combined to allow seven earned runs in 3.2 innings, and position player Jose Sanabria was conscripted into mop-up duty, allowing two runs in 1.1 innings.

The lineup was once again cold, posting four hits and one run in the loss. The team was held to one hit over the first seven innings, and the eighth inning saw the lone run scored on an RBI single by Jake Snider. Oswaldo Linares reached base twice in the game on a single and a walk. Braedon Karpathios and Jose Sanabria each singled in the game, but the team finished 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, stranding six baserunners.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 5-2 vs Visalia) (29-31 on the season)

Zach Evans – 1-for-4, Two-RBI Double

Chase Valentine – 2-for-4, Home Run

Boston Bateman – 5.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K (84 pitches – 58 strikes)

Boston Bateman continues to make a push for a California League All-Star nod, as the towering left-hander struck out four batters in 5.2 innings of work. Bateman allowed two runs, and his fastball kept blazing, topping out at 97 mph. Batters whiffs on a quarter of all swings against the southpaw (10 whiffs on 40 swings). Braian Salazar struck out three in 2.1 innings of relief, and Bernard Jose closed out the win with a scoreless inning of work.

The team’s lineup saw contributions up and down the lineup. Zach Evans tied the game with a two-run double in the third inning. Lamar King Jr continued his recent hot streak with a three-hit game, including a go-ahead RBI single. After the somewhat nomadic nature of his season, Chase Valentine hit his first home run of the season, and Kaden Hollow hit a sacrifice fly to cap off the scoring.

ACL Padres (Lost 12-3 vs ACL Rockies) (8-22 on the season)

Albert Fabian – 2-for-4, Two Singles

Gustavo Marquez – 2-for-4, RBI Single

Adan Moreno – 0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 1 K

The ACL Padres suffered a blowout loss, falling 12-3. Adan Moreno started his second rehab outing, but was knocked around for four runs while recording only one out. Winyer Chourio came on in bulk relief, tossing 3.1 innings of five-run baseball, although only one of those runs was earned. Jimmy Reyes and Roberto Burgos each had scoreless outings in the loss.

Albert Fabian continues to hit well on rehab assignment, finishing 2-for-4 with two singles and a run scored. Gustavo Marquez hit two singles as well, driving in a run. Jesus Castro hit an RBI single in the sixth inning, and Luis De Leon grounded into an RBI forceout. Emil Turbi had a base hit and scored a run in the loss.

I'd like this amount to

DSL Padres Gold (Won 8-2 vs DSL Red Sox Red) (4-4 on the season)

Jose Verdugo – 2-for-4, Two-Run Home Run

Fabian Alcantara – 1-for-4, Two-RBI Double

Joseph Herrera – 3 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K

The Padres Gold’s offense went off for eight runs in the nine-inning affair. Jose Verdugo launched a two-run home run in the game, his first professional homer. Eduarlin Tejeda hit a sac fly, and Moises Valdez had an RBI double. Fabian Alcantara finished the scoring in the eighth inning with a two-RBI double.

Joseph Herrera allowed two runs in three innings in his start for the Padres Gold. Herrera struck out two in his outing, allowing six hits. Jeferson Villabona made his professional debut with a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. Jesus Castro earned the win with five shutout innings of relief, striking out four batters.

DSL Padres Brown (Won 6-3 vs DSL Astros Orange) (4-3 on the season)

Andres Garza – 1-for-3, Home Run, Two RBI

Juan Martinez – 1-for-4, Two-Run Home Run

Dalvi Nunez – 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K

A pair of homers led the Padres Brown to a 3-0 lead early, and while the team’s pitching staff allowed three runs during regulation, the Padres Brown scored three in extra innings to win 6-3. Andres Garza and Juan Martinez each hit a home run, with Garza hitting a solo homer. Martinez, meanwhile, launched a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Yonaiker Hernandez hit a go-ahead RBI base hit, Dayquer Alfonzo drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to two, and Andres Garza hit a sac fly to give the Padres Brown a three-run lead.

Dalvi Nunez went four innings in his second career start, allowing one run and striking out four batters. Jeuris Guzman and Victor Pilarn tossed a scoreless inning of relief each. Yoesmerli Beltre allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, blowing the save. Beltre went back out for the tenth inning and recorded two outs, with Randoll Cruz coming in for the final out, recording the save.
