El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 9-4 vs Round Rock) (34-30 on the season)
Nate Mondou – 2-for-4, Triple, Two RBI, Three Runs Scored
Mason McCoy – 1-for-4, Two-RBI Single
Matt Waldron – 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 4 K (87 pitches – 56 strikes)
El Paso rode an offensive surge in the middle innings to win 9-4 over the Round Rock Express. The Chihuahuas were led offensively by four multi-hit performances. Reigning PCL Player of the Week Trenton Brooks had two hits and drove in a run. Nate Mondou had himself a triple-double in a literal manner, as he finished with a double, a triple, and drove in two runs. Yonathan Perlaza had a three-hit game, driving in a run of his own. Cody Roberts drove in two runs on a pair of sac flies, and Mason McCoy singled in two in the eighth inning.
Matt Waldron made an effective start for the Chihuahuas, tossing five innings of two-run baseball. Waldron didn’t get much swing-and-miss, but he was able to generate ample soft contact in the game, with only two balls registering as hard-hit into play. Austin Krob allowed a run on two walks in 0.2 innings, and Bryan Hoeing made another rehab appearance. Hoeing allowed a run on two hits in 0.1 innings of work, and his sinker averaged 17 inches of horizontal break despite the velo being down by 1.6 mph compared to his season average last year. Francis Pena threw 1.2 scoreless innings, and Jose Espada, just summoned to Triple-A, tossed a scoreless inning to close out the game.
Kyle Hart starts for El Paso in their next game, Tuesday at 5:15 pm Pacific.
San Antonio Missions (Lost 3-1 vs Amarillo) (31-27 on the season)
Francisco Acuna – 4-for-4, Four Singles, Walk, Run Scored
Devin Ortiz – 1-for-3, Double, Two Walks
Jagger Haynes – 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 2 K (81 pitches – 41 strikes)
San Antonio and Amarillo faced off in a classic Wild West pitchers’ duel between Jagger Haynes and fellow southpaw Avery Short. Haynes did not have his best stuff on the night, as he threw 41 of his 81 pitches for strikes. Despite this, Haynes battled and did not allow a single run to score. It was an impressive showing for the left-hander, who has been trending up over his last three starts. Stephen Jones tossed a scoreless seventh but allowed the first two batters to reach in the eighth, and he was relieved by Manuel Castro. Castro walked a batter to load the bases, and a groundout scored the tying run. Castro faced Christian Cerda with one out, and Cerda took a slider and lined it to left-center field, over the reach of Francisco Acuna to score two runs. While Castro exited the inning with no further scoring, the damage had been done.

The Missions’ offense was led by Francisco Acuna, who was not retired once by the Amarillo pitching staff. Acuna had four singles in the game and also had a stolen base. Devin Ortiz had the team’s lone extra-base hit with a double, also drawing two walks. Brandon Valenzuela drove in the team’s lone run on a fifth-inning groundout. Romeo Sanabria’s on-base streak came to an end, as the Missions’ first baseman went hitless in the game with no walks drawn. The Missions had the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth, but Sanabria grounded out to end the game.
Amarillo just can’t get Fransisco Acuña out tonight.

The Missions continue their series with Amarillo on Wednesday with Luis Patino on the mound, and EVT is privileged to collaborate once again with Austin Hartsfield of Sideline Sports, who is live on the scene covering the Sod Poodles. Here is Austin’s scouting report of Amarillo’s upcoming starter (and former Fresno State pitcher) Roman Angelo:
2025 hasn’t been kind to the Fresno State Bulldog so far. Since giving up 16 earned runs and 7 home runs in his first two starts of the season, Angelo has pitched to a 3.91 ERA (6.19 FIP) in his last nine outings of the season. His 15 home runs given up leads the Texas League in that category, and pairing that with his league leading 45 walks unfortunately usually means what could be solo shots turn into multi-run homers. In his only outing against San Antonio this year he posted a line of 5.0 IP / 6 H / 4 R-ER / 3 BB / 2 HBP / 1 K and a 2-Run homer coming off the bat of Moisés Gómez. Arizona’s #25 prospect by MLB Pipeline comes equipped with a 4-Seam fastball in the mid 90s that presents some serious movement at times, a sinker that sits in the lower 90s, a cutter in the mid to upper 80s, a slider that lives in the lower to mid 80s, a curveball that can tend to be similar to his former teammate Dylan Ray and a major key when he has success, and finally a changeup that on nights that he’s great is his best pitch when pair with a well placed fastball, despite running around the same speed as his cutter.
Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 11-9 vs South Bend) (29-29 on the season)
Leo De Vries – 2-for-3, Home Run, Three RBI
Jack Costello – 3-for-5, Home Run
Ian Koenig – 4.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R (3 ER), 2 BB, 5 K (88 pitches – 52 strikes)
Lake Elsinore’s offense had a particularly strong day in their season opener against the South Bend Cubs. Leo De Vries and Jack Costello powered up, with each connecting on a home run. De Vries had one of his strongest performances this month, and the TinCaps’ shortstop is now hitting .333 with a .972 OPS at home this season. Costello launched a homer for the second consecutive game, and Brandon Butterworth slugged two doubles of his own, scoring two runs. The team had two bases-loaded walks and hit-by-pitches, scoring four of their runs in that manner.

Ian Keonig started for Fort Wayne, and while he allowed eight hits in 4.1 innings, he pitched better than the statline shows. Three of the six runs that came off the right-hander were of the unearned variety. Koenig struck out five batters while only walking two, and his curveball was giving South Bend hitters fits in the early going. Luis German got out of a fifth-inning jam with a strikeout. Cole Paplham allowed two runs in an inning of work in his third TinCaps outing, striking out one. Harry Gustin continued his breakout campaign with two more scoreless innings, and the team went into the ninth leading by one. Without Tyson Neighbors, Fort Wayne turned to Eiker Huizi to close out the game, but Huizi allowed two home runs and three earned runs to blow the save. Huizi had not allowed a home run all season, posting one of the lowest fly ball rates on the TinCaps’ staff. When all was said and done, the TinCaps were unable to rally, dropping the series opener.

Clark Candiotti makes the start for the TinCaps on Wednesday. First pitch is at 4:05 pm Pacific.
Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 8-4 vs Visalia) (27-31 on the season)
Kaden Hollow – 2-for-4, Two-RBI Double
B.Y. Choi – 2-for-4, Double, Single, Two RBI
Will Varmette – 1.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 2 K (47 pitches – 27 strikes)
Visalia’s lineup appeared to have right-hander Will Varmette’s number, as the right-hander was tagged for six runs on eight hits in 1.1 innings of work. Varmette struck out two batters, but missed his locations in critical counts. It was his toughest start of the season at home, where he had been excellent. Adam Conrad threw 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, lowering his season ERA to 0.53. Xavier Ruiz allowed one run in 1.2 innings of work, walking three and striking out two.
The offense was led by Kaden Hollow, who had two hits and drove in two runs. Hollow has been consistent for the Storm this season, hitting .278 with a .749 OPS in 47 games. B.Y. Choi seems to be finding his swing as of late, as the Storm’s second baseman was 2-for-4 with an RBI single and RBI double. Ryan Wilson doubled and drew a walk in four plate appearances, and Lamar King Jr singled and drew a walk in four plate appearances. The team went 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position, stranding eight runners in the game. Ryan Jackson did not play in the game.

Kash Mayfield makes his second start back from shoulder discomfort on Wednesday. Be on the lookout for right-hander Kannon Kemp, whom has been said will pitch on Wednesday per Storm manager Brian Burress.
ACL Padres (Lost 6-0 vs ACL Rockies) (7-21 on the season)
Yimy Tovar – 1-for-3, Single
Luis De Leon – 1-for-2, Single
Humberto Cruz – 3 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 2 K
The ACL Padres were shut out by the ACL Rockies by a final score of 6-0. Humberto Cruz started for the Padres and went a season-high three innings. Despite the season-high in outs, Cruz surrendered four runs on six hits, striking out only two batters. Cruz continues to pitch deeper into games, which is a plus for him and the Padres. J.B. Wendelken made a rehab appearance as he works his way back from a lower-body injury, tossing a scoreless inning. Alejandro Lugo allowed two runs in two innings of work.
There wasn’t much going right for the Padres at the plate, as the team only had two hits and one walk all game. Yimy Tovar and Luis De Leon recorded the two singles in the game for the Padres, and Ismael Javier drew the team’s lone walk. The team was 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position in the loss.
DSL Padres Gold (won 14-8 vs DSL CLE Mendoza) (3-4 on the season)
Jhoan De La Cruz – 1-for-1, Triple
Isaac Ponce – 2-for-4, Three RBI
Carlos Alvarez – 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Carlos Alvarez made his second start in his pro career, tossing two innings of one-run baseball. The highly-touted left-hander struck out two batters, the first two strikeouts of his career. Edwyn Hernandez earned the win, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing two runs (both unearned). Hernandez walked three and struck out three in his outing. Johan Minaya allowed five runs (two earned) in two innings, and Jose Ortega locked it down with 2.2 scoreless innings.
The team’s lineup registered 13 hits and 12 walks in the game, scoring 14 runs. Moises Valdez was 3-for-4 out of the leadoff spot, with Isaac Ponce driving in three runs in the game. Deivid Coronil hit a single and scored a run, driving in a run on a bases-loaded walk. Jose Verdugo had a double as part of a multi-hit game, driving in two runs. Jhojan Downer drew three walks and scored two runs, and Jhoan De La Cruz came on as a pinch-hitter and roped a triple.
DSL Padres Brown (Lost 6-0 vs DSL Athletics) (3-3 on the season)
Cristian Benavides – 1-for-3, Double
Darian Castillo – 1-for-3, Single
Marco Eluscat – 4 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 3 K
The Padres Brown’s offense was stymied by Athletics pitching, as the team was only able to muster up three hits in a shutout loss. Cristian Benavides had the team’s lone extra-base hit with a double in the fifth inning. Darian Castillo had a single, raising his batting average to .400 on the season. Yonaiker Hernandez had another single in the game, and Andres Garza drew a pair of walks in the game.
Marco Eluscat made his second start of the season, and this time did not fare as well as in his debut. Eluscat allowed five runs in four innings of work, as Athletics batters got three hits and a walk against him. A pair of hit batters did not help the left-hander. Oliver Franco tossed three innings in relief (his first career relief appearance), allowing a run on two hits while striking out five batters.
