Credit: Missions

Padres minor league affiliates went 2-2 on Sunday to close out the week.
Here is our daily recap of games played.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 4-2 vs Albuquerque) (46-41 on the season)
Rodolfo Duran – 1-for-4, Two-RBI Double

Forrest Wall – 1-for-4, Single, Run Scored
Ryan Bergert – 4.2 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 3 K (63 pitches – 44 strikes)
Right-hander Ryan Bergert made a rehab start with the Chihuahuas as he works his way back from a right forearm contusion. Projected to throw between 55-65 pitches, Bergert worked through 4.2 innings of work on 63 pitches, striking out three batters. Bergert’s velocity was in its usual realm, as his fastball averaged 93.5 mph. Miguel Cienfuegos recorded seven outs in long relief, striking out two. Harold Chirino threw a scoreless inning of relief in the eighth.
The Chihuahuas as a whole got five hits against the Isotopes’ pitching staff. Rodolfo Duran had the only extra-base hit for the El Paso lineup, with his fifth-inning double scoring the only two Chihuahuas runs. Forrest Wall and Mason McCoy scored on the hit, with McCoy finishing the game reaching base on two walks. Tim Locastro had a base hit in four at-bats, but saw himself picked off immediately after. Neither Tirso Ornelas nor Luis Campusano played in the game.
San Antonio Missions (Won 5-0 vs Corpus Christi) (44-37 on the season)
Romeo Sanabria – 2-for-4, Two-Run Home Run
Anthony Vilar – 2-for-3, RBI Triple, Sac Fly, Three RBI
Henry Baez – 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K (67 pitches – 37 strikes)
Near-perfection for the Missions on Sunday, as the team threw eight hitless innings before a leadoff single in the ninth off Ethan Routzahn ended the no-hit bid. Missions starter Henry Baez, coming off a June that saw him named Texas League Pitcher of the Month, threw five hitless innings on 67 pitches. Baez struck out six and walked three, aided by four ground ball outs and a runner caught stealing by catcher Anthony Vilar. Jake Higginbotham threw a scoreless sixth, and Tyson Neighbors threw two scoreless innings, reaching 94.8 to 97 mph on his fastball. Ethan Routzahn surrendered a dribbling single to right field to open the ninth, but went on to retire the next three batters to complete the shutout win.

At the plate, Anthony Vilar and Romeo Sanabria were the coal that kept the Missions’ engine chugging. Vilar had himself a multi-hit performance, hitting his first triple of the season to score Devin Ortiz in the fourth. The triple gave him his second RBI of the day, as he had a sacrifice fly in the second to score Albert Fabian. Romeo Sanabria launched his eighth home run of the season in the eighth inning, a two-run shot to give the Missions a 4-0 lead. Vilar capped off a productive day with an RBI groundout to score the fifth run of the game. Albert Fabian hit a double and reached base three times in the game. Devin Ortiz finished with two hits in the game, and Francisco Acuna had his first hit since coming back from injury with a double in the third inning. Brandon Valenzuela made a ton of hard contact, but went 1-for-5 in the win.
Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 5-2 vs Lansing) (40-40 on the season)
Leo De Vries – 1-for-4, Two-Run Home Run
Brandon Butterworth – 2-for-3, Double
Luis Gutierrez – 4.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R (1 ER), 1 BB, 4 K (66 pitches – 45 strikes)
Luis Gutierrez pitched into the fifth inning for the TinCaps, remaining efficient with his pitches but allowing two runs. The left-hander did not help himself with two throwing errors, but did with a pickoff and four strikeouts. While he did not get many whiffs, he kept the ball in the park successfully. Sean Barnett got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning, keeping the game tied. Will Varmette made his TinCaps debut after his recent promotion, and the results were mixed. The right-hander struck out two batters and allowed only three hits in three innings. The downside is that one hit allowed was an eighth-inning go-ahead home run to Lansing’s Tommy White.

The big story of the day for the TinCaps was Leo De Vries’ sixth home run of the season. De Vries hit very well this series, hitting .300 with a 1.041 OPS against Lansing, and looks to be finding his stride as he gets ready to attend the Futures Game next week in Atlanta. Brandon Butterworth had two hits in the game, including a double, and hit .375 with a 1.150 OPS this series. Kai Roberts drew two walks and scored a run, and Brendan Durfee reached base twice in the loss.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 11-7 vs Inland Empire) (37-44 on the season)
Yendry Rojas – 5-for-5, Two Doubles, Three RBI
Chase Valentine – 4-for-5, Three Doubles, Three RBI
Abraham Parra – 4.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R (3 ER), 2 BB, 6 K (81 pitches – 48 strikes)
The bottom of the Storm’s lineup brought their fair share of thunder, as Chase Valentine and Yendry Rojas combined to have nine hits, five being doubles. Rojas was a perfect 5-for-5 on the day, driving in three runs and stealing a base. Valentine finished with four hits, three of which were doubles, also posting three RBI. Zach Evans and Kaden Hollow had identical performances, both going 2-for-5 with two RBI (coincidentally, each had two singles and drove in two runs). Kavares Tears drew three walks, officially going 1-for-2 with an RBI single.
Abraham Parra got the start for the Storm and tossed 4.2 innings of work. Parra struck out six batters, throwing 48 of his 81 pitches for strikes. His six strikeouts were one shy of his season high, and he continues to limit hits allowed. Parra is becoming a name to look out for this summer. Kleiber Olmedo looked unhittable in his outing, tossing 1.1 innings and striking out one. Regardless of the role he pitches in, Olmedo has some of the most slept-on stuff in the Padres system, with his funky release and extension allowing his already-strong 95 mph fastball to play above its characteristics. Igor Gil threw two scoreless frames, and Adam Conrad closed out the win with an inning of work.
