Padres Down on the Farm: July 11 (Urias homers in El Paso/Margevicius pitches for Amarillo)

The minor league affiliates for the San Diego Padres went 4-4 on Thursday.

Here is a brief recap of the day’s action.

El Paso Chihuahuas Lost 9-8 (55-35 on the season)

An eight-run second inning by the Isotopes sank the Chihuahuas while a ninth-inning threat was erased when Webster Rivas flew out to center field with the bases loaded. Jerry Keel got hammered in the ninth inning, allowing eight hits in the inning as well as eight of the nine runs. Five of those runs came off of home runs, including a solo shot and a grand slam off the bat of Drew Weeks. El Paso clawed back on homers by Luis Urias and Aderlin Rodriguez while a Michael Gettys RBI double and some run-scoring doubles slashed the Isotopes lead to one, but DJ Johnson was able to close out the ninth inning to preserve the save despite walking three batters.

Amarillo Sod Poodles Won 5-3 (44-45 on the season)

Ivan Castillo‘s two-run home run in the first inning put the Sod Poodles ahead in the first inning while RBI singled from Hudson Potts and Peter Van Gansen in the sixth inning put Amarillo ahead for good. Nick Margevicius pitched six innings and allowed just a single run while striking out five batters and walking just two. Castillo’s two-hit game raised his batting average to .347 while Peter Van Gansen brought his batting average to .286  with his two-hit night. Evan Miller earned his third Amarillo save with a perfect ninth inning.

The Lake Elsinore only picked up two runs in today’s game as Olivier Basabe had an RBI double in the seventh and an RBI single in the ninth inning. It turns out, those were the only runs they needed. Osvaldo Hernandez pitched three shutout innings and struck out four while Aaron Leasher pitched the remaining six innings to complete the shutout. In his second game with the Storm, Xavier Edwards picked up another single while hitting in the leadoff spot.

Today was not a good day to be a hitter for the TinCaps. The combined force of Burlington pitchers Dylan King and Kyle Tyler shut the TinCaps out while striking out seven and walking three batters. The only Fort Wayne hitters to collect base hits were Grant Little and Michael Curry. All of the runs scored came off of Sam Keating, who allowed five runs in just 2.2 innings of work. Three runs came off of home runs while Keating walked two batters and struck out three.

Tri-City went to extra innings against Spokane but, similar to the Dominican Summer League Padres, fell to the opposition. Jason Reynolds put the Dust Devils on the right foot with his start, pitching three shutout innings and striking out four. The only Tri-City run came off of a Kelvin Melean sacrifice fly in the third inning to score Reinaldo Ilarraza, but Spokane tied the game up when Kenan Irizarry slapped an RBI single in the fifth inning. Wen-Hua Sung kept the game tied up in the ninth by striking out two batters, but an RBI double and a two-run home run pushed the Indians over the top to down the Dust Devils.

The AZL Padres 1 squad smacked 17 hits together as a team while scoring 11 runs. Six hitters, including CJ Abrams, collected two or more hits in the game. A six-run sixth inning pushed the Padres led to 10-0 and started with a Michael Suarez solo home run while Bryan Torres and Tyler Malone hit run-scoring singles in the inning. Miguel Rondon pitched five shutout innings and struck out eight batters while walking one batter and giving up a single hit to earn the win.

The Padres 2 and Reds competed in a back-and-forth struggle that saw three ties and five different lead changes in the game. Carlos Guarate started the game and pitched 3.2 innings and allowed three runs and struck out five in the game. Cristian Heredia had himself a big game, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs while Gilberto Vizcarra collected four hits. Heredia put the Padres ahead one last time with his RBI single in the seventh and later scored on Vladimir Echavarria‘s RBI single. Hansel Rodriguez pitched an inning and allowed an unearned run to begin his rehab assignment.

An eleven inning game ended in an unfortunate defeat for the Padres. Alex Ramirez put the Padres in the lead with a first-inning RBI double and a wild pitch allowed Euribiel Angeles to score in the third inning. Three errors made by the Padres allowed three unearned runs to score in the game and, if they hadn’t occurred in the game, the Padres could have walked away with a win. In extra innings, Nick Rios allowed a runner to score in the tenth inning after the runner was placed on second base. A throwing error by first baseman Axcel Peralta allowed the go-ahead runs to score in the eleventh inning.
