Padres minor league affiliates went 2-2 on Wednesday.

Here is our daily recap of games played, along with the weekly roster roundup.

Roster Roundup

  • The El Paso Chihuahuas (Triple-A) welcomed right-hander Misael Tamarez onto their roster. The former Astros farmhand has built up with High-A Fort Wayne and Double-A San Antonio, and allowed two earned runs across 17.2 innings in his two stops in the Padres organization.
  • The San Antonio Missions (Double-A) saw infielder Wyatt Hoffman and catcher Eli Wilson placed on the development list on Wednesday. These moves were made to activate catcher Christopher Sargent and right-handers Jose Geraldo and Cole Paplham. Sargent signed with the Padres as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Mississippi over the weekend. Geraldo was activated from the development list, and Paplham made his way up to Double-A after 15 games between Rookie ball and High-A after missing time to open the season due to a Spring Training facial fracture.
  • The Fort Wayne TinCaps (High-A) welcomed two arms to their pitching staff, as left-hander Braian Salazar and right-hander Maikel Miralles were promoted to Fort Wayne. Salazar has fanned 74 in 51.2 innings this season with Lake Elsinore. Miralles has started 14 of 17 appearances this season and will likely provide the TinCaps with depth out of the bullpen.
  • The Lake Elsinore Storm (Single-A) welcomed right-hander Charlie Walker to their roster. Walker spent last season as a member of the Northeastern Huskies bullpen, striking out 56 against five walks in 48.2 innings.

Now, onto the games!

El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 6-3 vs Tacoma) (70-57 on the season)

Rodolfo Duran – 1-for-4, Three-Run Home Run

Yonathan Perlaza – 2-for-5, RBI Double

Matt Waldron – 1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 0 K (30 pitches – 16 strikes)

El Paso scored six unanswered runs to take a win over the Rainiers. Luis Campusano got El Paso on the board in the first inning with an RBI single. Rodolfo Duran continued his August power surge by putting the Chihuahuas ahead on a three-run homer, his 13th of the season. Duran has launched eight homers this month alone, with a 1.243 OPS to boot. Yonathan Perlaza had two hits, including a seventh-inning RBI double. Tirso Ornelas hit a ground-rule double down the line in the eighth to score another run. Ornelas has reached base in eight consecutive games, hitting .300 in his on-base streak.

Matt Waldron started for the Chihuahuas, but allowed three runs in one inning. Waldron was tagged for four hits and a walk, not recording a strikeout. Since Waldron hit 30 pitches in the first, he was relieved in the second by Wes Benjamin. Benjamin fired off five innings of shutout baseball, striking out one and recording ten of 15 outs on ground balls. Bradgley Rodriguez pitched a scoreless seventh, and Kyle Hart worked around two walks in the eighth to keep the Rainiers off the board. Ron Marinaccio pitched a scoreless ninth with a punchout to seal his sixth save of the season and the Chihuahuas’ 70th win.

San Antonio Missions (Won 14-11 vs Frisco) (59-63 on the season)

Braedon Karpathios – 3-for-4, Two Home Runs, Two RBI

Marcos Castanon – 2-for-5, Two Home Runs, Three RBI

Eric Yost – 3.2 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 2 K (93 pitches – 54 strikes)

A 14-11 final score… wait, what sport is this? The Missions launched seven homers to secure a 14-11 victory over Frisco. Braedon Karpathios launched his first two Double-A home runs in the win, driving in two runs and scoring four runs. Marcos Castanon also had a two-homer game, driving in three runs. Devin Ortiz launched a three-run homer in the seventh inning. Moises Gomez hit his seventh homer of the season, and Christopher Sargent launched his first pro homer in the seventh. <

On the mound, Eric Yost had his toughest start with the Missions, allowing a season-high nine hits. Yost really only had one “blow-up” inning, that being a three-run second inning. Yost struck out two batters, walking four. He worked around base traffic in the third and fourth innings, being relieved with two outs in the fourth. Kevin Kopps pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in the win, fanning one. Cole Paplham made his fifth career Double-A appearance, but was tagged for five runs on four hits. Paplham struck out two but threw two wild pitches and allowed an inside-the-park homer. Jose Geraldo pitched two innings, with the only runs he allowed coming on a pair of homers by Aaron Zavala. Stephen Jones pitched the final 1.1 innings, earning his first save of the season.

I'd like this amount to

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 3-2 vs Dayton) (55-66 on the season)

Zach Evans – 2-for-4, Double, Single, RBI

Chase Valentine – 1-for-4, RBI Double

Clark Candiotti – 4 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 8 K (78 pitches – 47 strikes)

Fort Wayne failed to pull off a comeback from a three-run first by Dayton, losing 3-2. At the dish, the team as a whole struck out 17 times in the game, hampering any chance at a comeback. Zach Evans was the lone TinCaps hitter with a multi-hit game, driving in one run on an RBI double. Chase Valentine also had an RBI double, driving in one run. Kai Roberts extended his hitting streak to seven games, and Kasen Wells has reached base in eight consecutive games.

Clark Candiotti pitched four innings for the second consecutive outing, and he struck out eight batters. The eight strikeouts were one off from his season-high, and he kept launch angles fairly low from Dragons batters. Fernando Sanchez struck out three in four innings of relief, and Josh Mallitz pitched a scoreless ninth in the loss.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 3-2 in 10 innings vs Rancho Cucamonga) (53-69 on the season)

Dylan Grego – 2-for-4, Two Doubles

Bradley Frye – 2-for-4, Two Singles, Run Scored

Kash Mayfield – 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K (74 pitches – 50 strikes)

Kash Mayfield kept doing Kash Mayfield things, as the young left-hander struck out a career-high nine batters in five innings of work. Mayfield allowed only three hits, flummoxing the Quakes’ lineup. Mayfield has now struck out 34.4% of batters faced this season, pitching to a 2.73 ERA. Clay Edmondson pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, fanning one batter. Vicarte Domingo walked three in a busy eighth inning, but was aided by catcher Carlos Rodriguez, who threw out Jaron Elkins stealing. Domingo walked two to open the ninth, and Bernard Jose was called on from the bullpen. Jose allowed a single to score one, and a double play ball tied the game at two.

But how did the Storm score the two runs, you ask? Ryan Wideman led off the game with a double, moving to third on a balk. Carlos Rodriguez grounded out to score Wideman for the Storm’s first run. Bradley Frye and George Bilecki led off the eighth with singles, and then pulled off a successful double steal to score Frye from third.

With the game tied at two, the Quakes pulled ahead on a forceout hit by Jose Meza. With Justin DeCriscio on second to lead off the home tenth, Bradley Frye and George Bilecki struck out. With two outs and the tying run on second, Ryan Wideman lined out to end the game.
