Padres minor league affiliates went 3-2 on Sunday to round out the week.

Here is our daily recap of games played.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 16-5 vs Sacramento) (69-56 on the season)

Clay Dungan – 2-for-5, Two Home Runs, Four RBI

Yonathan Perlaza – 4-for-5, Home Run, Four Runs Scored

Logan Gillaspie – 3.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 K (86 pitches – 54 strikes)

In the words of the legendary Bugs Bunny, “Wham! A homer! Wham! Another homer!” Homers and runs galore were the story of the game for the Chihuahuas as they secured the win in the season finale. Clay Dungan led off the game with his twelfth homer of the season to set the tone, and after the first inning was over, El Paso led 4-0. The second inning saw more antics with the long ball, as Tirso Ornelas hit a homer for a second consecutive game, and Nate Mondou’s August power surge continued with a two-run homer. Rodolfo Duran hit a two-run homer in the seventh, and Clay Dungan piled on with a three-run shot of his own. Yonathan Perlaza capped off his second four-hit game of the season with a solo homer against position player Drew Ellis. Every member of the starting lineup finished with a base hit, with the team drawing eight walks versus seven strikeouts.

On the mound, Logan Gillaspie pitched three scoreless innings in his second start of the series. The fourth inning saw the River Cats finally get on the board against the former Orioles farmhand. Sam Huff torched a hanging slider down the left field line to score Brett Wisely. Thomas Gavello then turned on a middle-middle sinker from Gillaspie to launch a two-run homer. Francis Pena struck out two in 1.2 innings of relief in the fourth and fifth, earning his fourth win of the season. Bradgley Rodriguez tossed a scoreless inning with two strikeouts and looks to be back to strength. Raul Brito pitched a scoreless seventh, with Jake Higginbotham pitching two innings to close out the win.

San Antonio Missions (Lost 5-4 vs Amarillo) (58-62 on the season)

Braedon Karpathios – 1-for-5, Double, Two RBI

Anthony Vilar – 1-for-2, Home Run, Two Walks

Harry Gustin – 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K (42 pitches – 24 strikes)

San Antonio’s Harry Gustin pitched well in his first start since June 25. Gustin fired off three scoreless innings with two strikeouts and has now pitched scoreless ball in his first two Double-A appearances. San Antonio took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Albert Fabian, giving the Missions their first lead since their walk-off on Friday. The lead did not last, as Amarillo rallied for five runs against Kevin Kopps. A hit-by-pitch and walk had two runners on with two outs, and J.J. D’Orazio singled to left to score the tying run. An error by Kai Murphy moved the runners to second and third, and proved costly. Jean Walters singled up the middle to give Amarillo a 3-1 lead. A walk and a Ryan Waldschmidt single later, Kopps was pulled from the game. Stephen Jones entered but allowed an RBI single to Gavin Conticello before the inning came to a close.

San Antonio promptly got a run back in the bottom of the fourth with a double by Braedon Karpathios, scoring Anthony Vilar. Vilar would be responsible for the Missions’ third run, with his fifth homer of the season putting the Missions within two runs. Vilar and Kai Murphy reached base at the start of the eighth, prompting Amarillo to turn to right-hander Zane Russell. Eli Wilson bunted the runners over, putting the tying run in scoring position. Braedon Karpathios grounded out to score Vilar. Francisco Acuna, who has been a thorn in Amarillo’s side this series, flew out to left field to strand the tying run on third base. Misael Tamarez threw scoreless eighth and ninth innings to keep the Missions in the game, but the team failed to rally in the home ninth, going down 1-2-3 to end the game.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 8-3 vs Lake County) (55-64 on the season)

Jack Costello – 2-for-4, Two Home Runs, Three RBI

Zach Evans – 1-for-4, Two-Run Double

Will Varmette – 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 0 K (78 pitches – 44 strikes)

Fort Wayne brought out the big lumber in their series-closing win over the Lake County Captains. Jack Costello was responsible for the fireworks, launching two home runs and driving in three runs. Zach Evans had his biggest hit in his short time with Fort Wayne, hitting a second-inning double with the bases loaded that scored two runs. Victor Duarte singled to score Evans, and Kasen Wells doubled to score Duarte. Rosman Verdugo reached base three times in the game, and Brendan Durfee drove in the final run of the game for the TinCaps on a ninth-inning single to score Duarte again.

Fort Wayne starter Will Varmette pitched his first quality start since May 27 with Lake Elsinore. The Wallace State alum pitched six innings of one-run baseball, and while he did not register a strikeout, he generated 13 of 18 outs on grounders and flyouts. For Varmette, the strikeouts coming back are the next step in his progression, and he will likely have two more starts to round out a promising season. Luis German walked three of five batters faced, and was charged with one run. Johan Moreno pitched 1.2 innings, allowing one unearned run and striking out one. Eiker Huizi closed out the win with a scoreless ninth.

I'd like this amount to

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 7-6 in 10 innings vs Stockton) (52-68 on the season)

Kavares Tears – 2-for-3, Two Home Runs

Alex McCoy – 1-for-5, Three-RBI Double

Tanner Musgrove – 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (19 pitches – 12 strikes)

Lake Elsinore and Stockton went to extra innings, where the Storm lost 7-6 in ten innings. Kavares Tears had the first multi-home run game of his pro career, launching two homers and driving in two runs. Carlos Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to score the Storm’s middle run in regulation. The biggest hit of the game belonged to Alex McCoy in the top of the tenth, as he cleared the bases with a double. Jorge Quintana had two stolen bases, and Justin DeCriscio had his first stolen base as a pro.

On the mound, opener Tanner Musgrove allowed one hit and struck out two in an inning of work. Abraham Parra allowed a three-run homer in the third inning, but he only surrendered three hits in his five innings of work. Parra also struck out six batters, his second-highest tally of the season. Vicarte Domingo pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Igor Gil tossed a scoreless ninth, but allowed three runs in the tenth inning, including a game-tying homer to Bobby Blandford. A walk to Gavin Turley chased Gil, and Bernard Jose came on to keep the tie. That would not come to happen, as Jose loaded the bases on a single and walk. With Jesus Superiano at the plate, Jose uncorked a wild pitch to allow the winning run to score.

DSL Padres Gold (Won 10-9 in 11 innings vs DSL Pirates Gold) (1-0 in Championship Round)

Abraham Bastidas – 2-for-3, Double, Three RBI

Isaac Ponce – 3-for-5, Game-Winning RBI Single

Jeronimo Palmeros – 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R (1 ER), 2 BB, 2 K

In a game that went in so many directions, Isaac Ponce’s walk-off single gave the DSL Padres Gold a 1-0 lead in the championship round of the inaugural DSL Cup. Abraham Bastidas led the way with three runs batted in on two hits. Eduarlin Tejeda hit two singles and drove in a run, scoring three runs in the game. Moises Valdez scored two runs and drove in two as well. Eddson Martinez drew three walks, scoring twice in the game.

The Padres required eight pitchers to get through the game. Starter Jeronimo Palmeros went 2.2 innings, allowing two runs. Florangel Vasquez threw a valiant effort, tossing 3.1 innings of two-run baseball. Daniel Burciaga walked three without recording an out, and Jeferson Villabona threw a season-high 2.1 innings, allowing two earned runs. Starter Josias Figuereo pitched two outs in relief, and Albert Perez threw a scoreless eleventh, earning the win.
