El Paso Chihuahuas

Padres minor league affiliates went 1-3 on Wednesday.

Here is our recap of the day’s minor league action.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 13-5 vs Albuquerque) (5-6 on the season)

Mason McCoy – 1-for-4, Three-Run Home Run

Samad Taylor – 1-for-4, Sac Fly, RBI

Marco Gonzales – 3.2 IP, 13 H, 10 R (4 ER), 0 BB, 3 K (84 pitches – 59 strikes)

El Paso’s first day game of the season was not what the team expected, as Albuquerque capitalized on five errors to rack up 13 runs. Marco Gonzales was knocked around for ten runs on 13 hits, recording only three strikeouts. Gonzales’ defense did him few favors, as they recorded four errors in four innings. The left-hander allowed five extra-base hits, shouldering the damage in the outing. Triston McKenzie threw 1.2 innings in relief, striking out four but allowing three runs. McKenzie’s fastball graded out well in his outing, and he looks to have a solid future in relief. Jason Adam made another relief appearance, pitching two scoreless innings on 14 pitches.

Mason McCoy’s three-run home run accounted for the Chihuahuas’ biggest swing of the game, but it only cut into the deficit by so much. McCoy’s fourth-inning home run made the score 10-4 in the fourth inning. Carlos Rodriguez atoned for his fielding error in the top half of the inning with an RBI forceout in the fourth, scoring the first run of the game. Both Nick Solak and Sung-Mun Song singled and scored a run in the game. Samad Taylor went 1-for-4 with a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, scoring El Paso’s final run of the contest.

San Antonio Missions (Lost 9-6 in 11 innings vs Corpus Christi) (1-4 on the season)

Carson Tucker – 2-for-4, Two Singles, RBI, Walk

Chris Sargent – 1-for-2, RBI Single, Walk

Jagger Haynes – 1.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R (3 ER), 3 BB, 1 K (51 pitches – 26 strikes)

In a back-and-forth affair, San Antonio dropped their third straight game by a 9-6 final in extra innings. The Missions’ bullpen covered 9.1 innings of the game after a short start from starter Jagger Haynes. In his season debut, Haynes allowed four runs (three earned) in 1.2 innings of work. The left-hander struck out only one batter, walking three and allowing one home run. Though he breezed through the first inning, deep counts and three walks in the second inning saw his outing come to a close five outs into the game. San Antonio wound up using six relievers the rest of the way, with Harry Gustin’s 2.2 scoreless innings of relief leading the way. Gustin saw time as a long reliever and late-inning arm last season, and was effective; he was used. Andrew Thurman threw 2.1 innings, allowing one run. Francis Pena took the loss, as he allowed four runs (one earned) in one-plus innings of work, walking five.

The Missions’ offense got contributions up and down the lineup in the battle of attrition that was this game. Former Cleveland first-round pick Carson Tucker had two hits, including a game-tying RBI single in the tenth inning. Catcher Chris Sargent, who signed out of independent ball late last season, went 1-for-2 with an RBI single, walk, and run-scoring instance of catcher interference. Francisco Acuna drove in two runs on a walk and a single. Ryan Jackson reached base three times, driving in one of three second-inning runs. Kai Roberts and Braedon Karpathios each reached base two times on a single and a walk, and each scored a run. Tirso Ornelas’ eighth-inning double led to a game-tying rally in said frame. Despite the positives, San Antonio went 4-for-17 with runners in scoring position, stranding 14 runners in the loss.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 15-1 vs Lansing) (1-4 on the season)

Alex McCoy – 1-for-4, Double

Jack Costello – 1-for-4, RBI Single

Isaiah Lowe – 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K (63 pitches – 38 strikes)

The TinCaps’ pitching staff was hit hard in their loss to Lansing, as the Lugnuts tallied 15 hits to the TinCaps’ two. Starter Isaiah Lowe allowed three runs in four innings of work, striking out three. Lowe pitched fairly well, as he got five of 12 outs via the ground ball, including a fourth-inning double play. Clark Candiotti was charged with two runs in 1.1 innings, striking out three batters. Will Varmette came on in relief and recorded three outs without allowing a run, but was pulled with the bases loaded. New reliever Bernard Jose surrendered back-to-back run-scoring singles to score all three inherited runners. Jose took the worst of the drubbing, as he was charged with five runs while recording just three outs. Right-hander Luis German was the final reliever used by Fort Wayne, and he pitched 1.2 innings of two-run baseball. By comparison, the Fort Wayne lineup mustered two hits all game, though they also drew seven walks. The TinCaps had a runner on base in six of nine innings, but were only able to break through once. With two on and two out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Jack Costello singled to center field to score Carlos E. Rodriguez. Rodriguez and Kasen Wells drew two walks each, but the TinCaps did not get opportunities to put the running game in motion. Alex McCoy’s fourth-inning double was the team’s lone extra-base hit of the game, and the ‘Caps went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

I'd like this amount to

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 9-7 vs Rancho Cucamonga) (2-3 on the season)

Truitt Madonna – 2-for-3, Triple, Two RBI

Victor Duarte – 2-for-3, Double, Two RBI

Jesus A. Castro – 3.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K (68 pitches – 44 strikes)

The Storm’s lineup rode a fourth-inning five-spot to an early lead they’d hold all the way to the final out. The team’s lineup was led by Ty Harvey and Truitt Madonna, who each had two base hits in the game. Madonna had the team’s lone triple of the game, and his fourth-inning single drove in the first run of the game for the home team. Bradley Frye followed Madonna with a single of his own to score pinch-runner Kerrington Cross. Victor Duarte, starting at first base, doubled to score Madonna and Frye, giving the Storm a 4-2 lead. A walk to Justin DeCriscio scored Durate, as pitcher Ubaldo Soto uncorked a wild pitch. Madonna and Ryan Wideman each drove in a run on groundouts in the ensuing two frames, and Jose Verdugo, reaching base on a fielding error,r scored Lake Elsinore’s eighth run. An eighth-inning groundout by Bradley Frye scored the ninth and final run for the home team.

Lake Elsinore’s starting pitcher, Jesus A. Castro, made his stateside debut in the game, pitching 3.2 innings of two-run baseball. Castro struck out two batters, allowing six hits and one walk. Castro fared very well in the DSL last season, having posted a 2.91 ERA and 3.25 FIP in 43.1 innings. Reliever Carlos Medina had one of the most efficient and economical outings for any Padres minor league arm this season, as he threw 2.1 innings of one-run baseball with two strikeouts on 29 pitches (26 strikes). Sean Barnett walked four in two-thirds of an inning, throwing two wild pitches and allowing three runs. Left-hander Joseph Herrera pitched 1.1 innings of one-run baseball from the seventh to eighth innings. Right-hander Ethan Long made his second career outing on the mound, throwing a scoreless ninth with one strikeout for his second save of the season.
