Padres Down on the Farm: May 1 (Haynes’ quality start/Salas homers for SA)
Credit: Missions

Padres affiliates went 2-2 on May Day.
Here is our daily recap of games played.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 26-8 vs Albuquerque) (15-16 on the season)
Pablo Reyes – 2-for-5, Three-Run Home Run
Marcos Castanon – 2-for-4, Double, Two RBI

Marco Gonzales – 2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 1 K (44 pitches – 25 strikes)
It wouldn’t be a week in the PCL without a football score, but based on this outcome, I’m sure El Paso will call this game Bruno the way it will never be spoken of again. The Chihuahuas’ pitching staff struggled at the altitude. Starter Marco Gonzales pitched two innings, allowing four runs on five hits. The left-hander is working his way into longer outings, but this result was not ideal for him and the Chihuahuas’ bullpen. Triston McKenzie’s command was non-existent in relief, as he allowed six consecutive baserunners to reach, with only five of his 23 pitches going for strikes. McKenzie was charged with six runs while recording no outs. Miguel Cienfuegos threw two innings of one-run baseball, though all inherited runners against him scored. Garrett Hawkins had his first real “Welcome to the PCL, enjoy your stay” outing, as he was charged with six runs while recording just two outs in relief. Ethan Routzahn allowed three runs and six baserunners in 1.1 innings, and Eli Villalobos picked up three outs while allowing two runs. The Chihuahuas turned to Nate Mondou in the ninth inning, and he was charged with four runs.
The lineup performed admirably under the circumstances. Pablo Reyes continues to hit, as the former Yankee went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run. Though Reyes’ home run fell into the too little too late category, it was still a much-needed boost for the Chihuahuas. Marcos Castanon had two base hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Nick Solak finished 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, raising his average to .308. Carlos Rodriguez finished with three hits at the top of the lineup, and a rehabbing Will Wagner reached base twice in the loss. Samad Taylor had two hits in five at-bats, opening the month with a multi-hit game.
San Antonio Missions (Lost 7-2 vs Tulsa) (6-19 on the season)
Ethan Salas – 2-for-4, Home Run, Double, Walk
Braedon Karpathios – 2-for-3, Two Singles, Walk
Jagger Haynes – 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 8 K (85 pitches – 52 strikes)
Left-hander Jagger Haynes had his first quality start since June 21, 2025, vs Frisco in the Missions’ 7-2 loss to Tulsa. Haynes allowed only three hits all game, striking out a season-high eight batters. Haynes also limited the free passes, issuing only one walk. The left-hander picked up 12 swings and misses on the evening, and while he doesn’t bring overpowering velocity, the former 2020 5th-round pick brings a nice blend of pitchability and deception to allow him to be successful. Andrew Dalquist allowed four runs in 0.2 innings, taking the loss. He walked three and hit a batter while recording two outs. Andrew Thurman allowed one run in 1.1 innings, walking two and striking out one. The Missions’ rotation continues to perform well, but the bullpen has been very hit or miss this season.
Haynes’ quality start for @missionsmilb was his first quality start (in terms of the “6+ IP, 3 or less earned runs kind”) since June 21, 2025 vs Frisco.
If Haynes continues to deliver as he did today, breakout season incoming? https://t.co/cKB2JvfPHK

The Ethan Salas light show continued on Friday night, as the Padres’ No. 1 prospect launched his fourth home run of the season. Salas’ leadoff blast came off the bat at 110 mph, and he has posted EV90’s of 105 mph this season. The former top signee is so back, and he added on with an opposite-field double in the game as well. Braedon Karpathios continues to find his stroke at Double-A despite going through ups and downs; his 2-for-3 performance on Friday was definitely more of an up, as he reached base three times. Ryan Jackson was 1-for-4 in the game, though his one hit was a game-tying RBI single. Jackson, like much of the Missions’ offense, has started slow, but has reached base at least once in each of his last 12 games. Albert Fabian went 2-for-4 with two singles, and Leandro Cedeno reached base once, scoring the tying run. Romeo Sanabria went 0-for-5 with a strikeout, and is now 1-for-his-last-25 with eight walks and eight strikeouts in that span.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 6-2 vs South Bend) (10-15 on the season)
Jack Costello – 2-for-4, Home Run, Four RBI
Jake Cunningham – 1-for-2, Single, Two Walks, Two Runs Scored
Kash Mayfield – 3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 4 K (80 pitches – 35 strikes)
Jack Costello drove in four runs to back Kash Mayfield and the TinCaps’ bullpen as the team won a third straight game for the first time this season. Costello drove in two runs on a seventh-inning single to give Fort Wayne a 4-2 lead. The former USD Torero added on in the ninth inning with a two-run home run, his third of the season. Costello has now driven in 12 runs this season, tied for second on the team. Jake Cunningham, who also happens to have 12 RBI this season, reached base three times, scoring two runs. Zach Evans had his first two-hit game since April 12, hitting two singles in the game. Alex McCoy reached base three times on a base hit and two walks, and Lamar King Jr walked twice and stole two bases.

Kash Mayfleid had the sort of outing that classifies as “effectively wild”. While Mayfield allowed only two runs in 3.2 innings, he walked five and threw ten more balls than strikes. Mayfield was making competitive pitches, but he only generated four whiffs in his start. The left-hander now has a 2.29 ERA this season and has only allowed seven hits in 19.2 innings this season. CJ Widger and Luis German combined to get through the middle innings, with German earning the win after the TinCaps’ seventh inning rally. Tucker Musgrove pitched 1.2 innings in relief, striking out three batters. Musgrove touched 97 mph on his fastball, and if he is able to keep his velocity while flashing some wicked breaking pitches (as he did today as well), he’s got all the makings of a dominant late-inning arm. Clay Edmondson came into a two-on, two-out jam in the eighth and struck out the next four batters to close out a win, earning his fourth save on the season.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 10-7 vs Ontario) (15-10 on the season)
Victor Duarte – 3-for-5, Double, Three RBI
Justin DeCriscio – 3-for-4, Three Doubles, RBI
Kruz Schoolcraft – 3.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R (3 ER), 3 BB, 5 K (60 pitches – 35 strikes)
Lake Elsinore continues to cook up five-run innings like they’re on an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, as a five-run seventh inning helped pave the way for a 10-7 win. Three members of the Storm’s starting lineup had three hits. Victor Duarte, starting at first base, had three hits and drove in three runs. Duarte drove in two on a single in the sixth and hit an RBI double in the seventh. Luke Cantwell hit three singles, driving in a run in the seventh and two in the ninth. Justin DeCriscio hit three doubles in the game, driving in one run and also scoring two times. Qrey Lott scored two runs, as did Truitt Madonna, who drew two walks. Jose Verdugo scored a run early, and Ryan Wideman had a single and a stolen base in the victory.
Kruz Schoolcraft had his longest outing to date, pitching into the fourth inning and striking out five. The left-hander allowed a first-inning home run, and while he scattered seven baserunners, he was able to put a stop to developing rallies thanks to his pickoff move. Schoolcraft picked off two baserunners in the game, and with that, has put baserunners on notice. Schoolcraft also generated nine whiffs on 25 swings (36% whiff rate) in the outing. The left-hander continues to show incremental growth, which for an arm of his youth is exactly what the Padres organization likes to see. Daichi Moriki worked his best outing of the season in relief, fanning two in 1.2 innings of relief. Javier Chacon worked around five baserunners in two scoreless innings, earning the win. Sean Barnett walked three in 0.2 innings, allowing a run in the eighth. With the Storm leading 8-5, manager Brallan Perez called on Will Koger for the second time in this series. Koger struck out Mairo Martinus to strand the bases loaded. Leading 10-5 in the ninth, Koger allowed two hits and two runs, but picked up three strikeouts in the frame to close out a tight 10-7 win.
