‘Midway Rising’ coming soon to San Diego
Is there really a better time to be a sports fan in the beautiful city of San Diego? I don’t think so.
Stan Kroenke, the owner of multiple professional sports clubs, including the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Broncos, and Denver Nuggets (who just won the NBA Finals on Monday night), is the man making this all happen.
The billionaire team owner and businessman is the majority investor for this new project. He has won a championship in three consecutive seasons, all in different sports (Rams – 2021, Colorado Avalanche – 2022, Nuggets – 2023). This man knows how to win.
The goal is to build a bigger sports arena than the one currently in the Midway District, Pechanga Arena. This arena will hold around 16,000 seats, and the future goal will be to bring an NHL and NBA team to the city.
Kroenke helped build a 5.5 billion dollar stadium in SoFi Stadium just 120 miles north of San Diego for the Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. He is not slowing down one bit.
A potential NHL team could be the Arizona Coyotes, who currently play in a 5,000-seat arena at Arizona State University. They have been searching for a new home for quite some time. However, the San Diego Gulls currently play at Pechanga Arena and could be the face of the new arena for the time being. The San Diego Seals, San Diego Sockers, and San Diego Strike Force all play there as well.
The NBA is looking to expand, as commissioner Adam Silver has mentioned in many times in the past. We will see if San Diego could be a potential suitor with this brand-new arena.
This project will also have thousands of new housing units, a hotel, and retail space. It’s on pace to open in 2025.
San Diego is getting a MLS team in 2025 as well. Who says more professional clubs can’t be on the way?
