Padres Down on the Farm: June 12 (Schoolcraft K’s 7/Haynes’ quality start)

Padres affiliates went 5-2 on Friday night.
Let’s dive right into the night’s action.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 3-2 vs Round Rock) (30-37 on the season)
Nick Pratto – 1-for-4, RBI Double
Nick Schnell – 1-for-4, Go-Ahead Two-RBI Single

German Marquez – 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K (62 pitches – 40 strikes)
German Marquez’s third rehab start picked up where his first two left off; Marquez struck out two in four innings of scoreless baseball. The Padres right-hander continued to see his velocity trend upward, averaging 94.9 mph (0.6 mph up from his season average). Marquez’s knuckle curve was the main whiff producer, and the right-hander got up to 62 pitches. Look for him to make 1-2 more rehab starts before returning to the major league club, as he is close to a starter’s full pitch count (80-100). Triston McKenzie returned from the development list, throwing one inning with one earned run allowed. Justin Yeager threw one inning, allowing one earned run on a solo home run. Misael Tamarez made his first appearance in eight days, throwing a scoreless seventh inning and earning the win. Sean Boyle threw a scoreless eighth inning with a strikeout; today’s game marked just the second time all season that the New York native recorded an out in the eighth inning. Ethan Routzahn closed out the win with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, striking out one. For the lineup, the Chihuahuas were patient and opportunistic. Nick Pratto got the team on the board with an RBI double in the first inning, his second extra-base hit with El Paso. Carlos D. Rodriguez hit a single and walked, picking up two steals on the basepaths. Blake Hunt was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored as the team’s DH. Nick Schnell had the decisive swing of the bat, as the Chihuahuas’ right fielder hit a two-run single off former Padre Mason Thompson to deliver a 3-2 lead.
San Antonio Missions (Won 3-0 vs Frisco) (26-35 on the season)
Braedon Karpathios – 1-for-4, Go-Ahead RBI Single
Ryan Jackson – 2-for-4, Double, Single, RBI
Jagger Haynes – 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K (95 pitches – 60 strikes)
San Antonio and Frisco were in a scoreless stalemate until the eighth inning, when three Missions runs led the team to a Friday night win. Jagger Haynes dominated the RoughRiders over six scoreless innings, striking out five batters. Haynes generated 12 swings and misses, walking only two. The only hit the left-hander allowed was a third-inning infield single, so he was very close to throwing six no-hit innings. The former 5th-rounder has pitched five or more innings in seven of his last eight starts dating back to May 1, with a 3.32 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in the same stretch. While he has taken a longer journey than other players in professional baseball, it appears that the Padres’ faith in Haynes is close to being cashed in. Josh Mallitz struck out three in two innings of scoreless relief and has now fanned 10 in six innings this month. Johan Moreno threw a scoreless ninth with a strikeout, earning his fourth save of the season. The Missions’ offense came alive in the late innings, as the eighth inning became their inning. Kai Murphy led off the inning with a single, and Kai Roberts took his place at first as a pinch-runner. Ethan Salas then fought off a lefty-lefty inside pitch to left field. Braedon Karpathios capitalized on the opportunity, grounding a seeing-eye single into right-center field to score Roberts. San Antonio now led 1-0, and they weren’t done. Romeo Sanabria hit a soft grounder to shortstop, and Frisco could only take the out at first, so Ethan Salas came in to score. After a walk and a wild pitch, Ryan Jackson hit into a forceout to score Karpathios, extending the lead to three. Jackson had two hits in the game, his second straight multi-hit game.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 10-6 vs Dayton) (25-36 on the season)
Justin DeCriscio – 2-for-5, Grand Slam
Rosman Verdugo – 3-for-5, Home Run, Three RBI
Abraham Parra – 5 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 5 K (81 pitches – 45 strikes)
Justin DeCriscio’s grand slam was one of many highlights for the TinCaps in a 10-6 win against Dayton. DeCriscio’s slam capped off a seven-run fourth inning for Fort Wayne. Alex McCoy led off the inning with a double and scored on a single by Rosman Verdugo. Kavares Tears doubled, and Jack Costello then singled to score Verdugo. Zach Evans reached on a fielding error (that could’ve been an infield single), scoring Tears. Kasen Wells was then plunked on the foot to load the bases, and Justin DeCriscio took a knee-high fastball out to the Dragons Lair in left field for a 7-1 lead. Rosman Verdugo’s 24th career TinCaps homer scored two more runs for the ‘Caps, and a ninth-inning bunt single by Kasen Wells scored Zach Evans. Evans went 3-for-5 with a double, and Alex McCoy had two doubles in the win. The TinCaps’ left fielder broke a 3-for-34 slump with his performance and now leads the Midwest League in doubles with 20.

For the first time this season, Friday was not Kash Mayfield Day for the TinCaps. Abraham Parra was bumped up to start, and he pitched better than the final line indicates. Parra had thrown four innings of one-run baseball going into the fifth, with the only run against him coming via sac fly. The right-hander issued three walks in the fifth, and with two outs, he came within one strike of ending the inning. Carlos E. Rodriguez called for a high-outside corner fastball, but Parra threw one that leaked over the heart of the plate, and Alfredo Duno did not miss. Cincinnati’s No. 1 prospect hit a grand slam of his own, cutting the lead to 7-5. Parra ended the inning one out later, but one pitch was the difference between a gem and a tough, gutsy stat line.
Alfredo Duno. That’s it. That’s the post. ?#feelthefire pic.twitter.com/lmtGO9fc9e

Jeferson Villabona allowed a solo home run in an inning of relief, as Carter Graham crushed a hanging slider. Ryan Och struck out four in 1.2 innings, striking out half the batters he faced. Right-hander Will Varmette came on in the eighth with two outs, ending the frame with two baserunners left on. Varmette returned for the ninth ahead 10-6, striking out two with one more walk issued. Despite a 50% strike rate in this outing, the right-hander earned his first career save at the High-A level.

I was left really impressed by the improvement in his breaking ball command. The slider/curveball/sweeper have been filthy this season!@EVT_News pic.twitter.com/Eul6PX7mjz

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 9-8 vs Ontario) (34-27 on the season)
Truitt Madonna – 2-for-4, Two Doubles, Four RBI
Kerrington Cross – 2-for-5, Double, RBI
Kruz Schoolcraft – 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 7 K (76 pitches – 44 strikes)
Left-hander Kruz Schoolcraft is finding his rhythm at the professional level, as he struck out seven batters in five innings of work. Schoolcraft generated nine whiffs and also picked off a baserunner in the second. The left-hander has shown steady progression from start to start, and could be on the verge of a major breakout month. Command has been an area of major improvement, as he has only issued one walk in his last two starts. Rordy Mejia allowed two runs in one inning on a two-run home run. Joseph Herrera’s recent struggles continued, as he allowed two runs in one-third of an inning. Herrera has allowed seven runs in his last three innings of work (21.00 ERA, 8.21 FIP). Brandon Langley threw two innings of relief, but departed the game with the go-ahead run on base. Vicarte Domingo entered to close out the game, but a walk and groundout later, Ontario led 9-7 as a throw to third by Kerrington Cross in an attempt to get the third out got past Yimy Tovar, allowing two runs to score.

Truitt Madonna had one of the best games of his professional career; he hit two doubles and drove in four runs. Madonna’s first double cleared the bases in the first inning, giving the Storm a 3-0 lead. George Bilecki hit an RBI double against rehabbing major-leaguer Brock Stewart, a pop-up into no-man’s land that scored Madonna. Yimy Tovar, who entered as a defensive replacement for Bradley Frye, drew a bases-loaded walk. Frye took a fastball off his left wrist in the first inning, and while he initially stayed in the game, he was removed for precautionary measures in the third. Luke Cantwell drew three walks, also hitting a double in the game, while Kerrington Cross was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Jorge Quintana went 1-for-5 with a double, also recreating the “Air Tatis” play at shortstop.

ACL Padres (Lost 6-5 vs ACL Guardians) (16-14 on the season)
Moises Valdez – 2-for-3, Double, Walk, Two Runs Scored
Isaac Ponce – 1-for-3, Home Run
Adler Cecil – 3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 4 K
Left-hander Adler Cecil had his first true bump in the road this season, as the left-hander was tagged for two home runs and five earned runs by the ACL Guardians. Cecil struck out four batters, but allowed seven hits (five for extra bases). The left-hander’s ERA ballooned to 7.02 on the season, but his FIP paints a more representative image of his season (3.42 FIP). Daison Acosta allowed a solo home run in one inning of relief. Dariel Polanco allowed three hits but no runs in one inning, and Jordan Valenzuela threw a scoreless seventh in the loss. Moises Valdez continues to reach base, as he did three times on Friday. Valdez scored two runs for the Padres and has a .443 OBP this season. Santiago Contreras hit an RBI single in the third inning, and Wyatt Hoffman had an RBI single of his own in the fourth. Isaac Ponce hit his second home run of the season in the sixth inning, and Hoffman’s second RBI single of the game brought the Padres within one run.
DSL Padres Gold (Won 9-6 vs DSL Brewers Gold) (6-2 on the season)
Joniel Hernandez – 3-for-5, Two Doubles, Two RBI
Dayquer Alfonzo – 2-for-4, Two Singles, Two RBI
Josias Figuereo – 2.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Joniel Hernandez continued his strong start, as he drove in two runs on a pair of doubles. Hernandez’s .375 average is third on the Padres Gold, and he has driven in 16 runs in his first eight games. Dayquer Alfonzo hit a pair of RBI singles, finishing 2-for-4. Eddson Martinez drove in a pair of runs without the benefit of a hit; this time it was a walk and a sac fly. Yorvin Morla scored two runs in the win. Josias Figuereo, the Padres Gold’s starter, pitched 2.2 innings of four-run baseball. Figuereo struck out two, walking two. Albert Perez threw his longest outing of the season, with 3.1 innings of one-run baseball. Left-hander Emmanuel Polo earned the win with two scoreless innings, sitting down two batters by way of the K. Julio Dilone allowed a solo homer in the ninth but struck out three in the frame.
DSL Padres Brown (Won 6-4 vs DSL Reds) (3-6 on the season)
Ronnier Heras – 2-for-3, Double, RBI
Jeanfranco Fernandez – 1-for-5, Two-RBI Single

Yojansy Perez threw four innings of two-run ball against the DSL Reds, picking up five strikeouts. The left-hander walked three, but picked up six outs via the ground ball. Aneury Sosa allowed two runs in two innings, but still picked up the winning decision. Raudi Perez pitched three scoreless innings to earn his first career save. Shortstop Ronnier Heras drove in one run on a double, reaching base four times in the win. Yonaiker Hernandez hit three singles, and Berman Moreno drove in a run on a bases-loaded walk. Jeanfranco Fernandez hit a two-run single to give the Padres Brown the lead. Pedro Silva scored three runs, and Endy Rios finished with two hits and an RBI.
