Kyle Vassell added to USL Championship Team of the Week
USL Championship places another member of the Loyal on the Team of the Week
On Saturday, April 9, forward Kyle Vassell helped the Loyal earn a 4-1 victory over Charleston Battery and has now been named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 5.
Vassell nailed in a pair of goals to help propel his team over an Eastern Conference opponent. San Diego is now (5-1) on the season with 15 points and a +7 goal difference, putting SD Loyal at the top of the Western Conference standings.
The English striker scored in the first half after fighting off a defender with his back to goal. He spun around and fired a low shot across the six-yard box into the net.

For his second goal, Vassell made a play for the highlight reel, which is something many Loyal players like to do. The forward blasted a shot from 20-yards out, resulting in a nomination or the league’s Goal of the Week.

Vassell’s brace against Charleston now puts him in the team-lead for goals and second in the league with four on the season. He is tied with Dane Kelly and Albert Dikwa, who both play for Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. Daniel Trejo (not the famous Spanish actor) has started the season off hot with five goals for Las Vegas Lights FC.
Vassell started in all six league matches this season, playing 428 minutes. He was part of SD Loyal’s dominant attack in the match against Charleston as he ended the match with four shots while completing 17 of 22 passes.
The star forward is now the fourth SD Loyal player to be named to the league’s Team of the Week this season. The club has had four players earn this honor four weeks in a row: goalkeeper Koke Vegas (Week 2, March 22), midfielder Alejandro Guido (Week 3, March 29) and Tumi Moshobane (Week 4, April 5).
What can’t these players do? Expect more of the same as the season continues because the San Diego Loyal are rolling to start the 2022 campaign.
