Padres Down on the Farm: May 25 (Abrams 3 hits, Beaty 4 hits for EP/Baez, Lamet throw scoreless frames for SA)
Blowouts combined with postponements filled the day for San Diego Padres minor league affiliates.
The El Paso Chihuahuas got a big boost from players whom Padres fans got to watch at the big leagues earlier this year, and the San Antonio Missions received strong relief outings from two young padres pitchers who are looking to work back to majors.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 16-8) (24-20)
C.J. Abrams– 3-for-4, 3 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Matt Beaty– 4-for-5, 4 R, 3 RBI
Reiss Knehr– 4 IP, 6 H, 7 ER, 4 BB, 6 K
Tyler Higgins– 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Nine runs in the seventh inning saved a poor Reiss Knehr start as the El Paso Chihuahuas won 16-8. Knehr had navigated to tough Pacific Coast League until Wednesday when he allowed seven runs over just four innings of work. He left with El Paso trailing 7-1 after Matt Beaty homered in the first inning. The Chihuahuas scored six unanswered runs to tie the game at seven, headlined by a Luis Liberato solo home run, a Matt Beaty two RBI-single, and three sacrifice flies.
Luke Westphal surrendered the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning, but El Paso responded with nine runs in the bottom half. Taylor Kohley got it started with a three-run home run, which was followed by run-scoring hits from Luis Liberato, Shogo Akiyama (who replaced Brent Rooker), C.J. Abrams, and Luis Campusano. Tyler Higgins shut the door for the Chihuahuas in the eighth and ninth innings.

With Tuesday’s game being postponed, the San Antonio Missions and Frisco RoughRiders played a doubleheader Wednesday. Both games were seven innings.
In game one, the San Antonio Missions dominated in an 8-1 victory. Connor Hollis got the game started with an RBI triple in the top of the first inning before scoring later on a groundout. In the third inning, Esteury Ruiz, Connor Hollis, and Yorman Rodriguez hit back-to-back-to-back home runs. Chandler Seagle and Domingo Leyba later singled in runs to add to the lead.

Esteury Ruiz- 1-3, 2 R
Domingo Leyba- 2-3, 1 K
Reggie Lawson– 2.2 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
Jason Blanchard– 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
The bats were quiet for San Antonio in the second game. They quickly fell behind when Lawson allowed at least a run in all three innings that pitched before leaving the ball game in the middle of the third inning with six earned runs. His ERA for the season at Double-A now sits at 9.43. Once Lawson exited, the rest of the Missions’ staff did not allow a single base runner. Juan Fernandez singled home Yorman Rodriguez for San Antonio’s lone run.
Thomas Eshelman will start for San Antonio on Thursday.
