Padres affiliates went 1-0 on Monday. Let’s dive into the day’s events, which include some award announcements. 

El Paso Chihuahuas – Off Day

The Chihuahuas are on the road in Oklahoma City this week, taking on the OKC Comets (Dodgers Triple-A). The team has yet to announce a starter, though Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove may make a rehab start in the series opener. 

San Antonio Missions – Off Day

San Antonio was off on Monday, as they head to Springfield for a six-game set against the first-place Cardinals (Cardinals Double-A). The Missions are 4-2 against the Cardinals this season. Luis Gutierrez is on track to make the start in the series opener. 

Fort Wayne TinCaps – Off Day

The TinCaps play their final home series of the season this week, hosting the Dayton Dragons (Reds High-A) for six games. The TinCaps’ rotation is not yet set this week, as Kannon Kemp (the team’s Tuesday starter) made the start in the series finale. Winyer Chourio would be the next man up, so either he or Isaiah Lowe will make the start on Tuesday. 

In other TinCaps news, infielder Bradley Frye earned Midwest League Player of the Week honors. Frye, 24, posted an OPS of 1.189 in the team’s series split against Great Lakes, slashing .417/.481/.708 with three multi-hit games. Frye had four hits go for extra bases (one homer, two doubles, and a triple), driving in seven runs. He is the second TinCap to earn said award this season, after Alex McCoy earned the award for the week of July 27-August 2.

Lake Elsinore Storm – Off Day

The Storm are on the road this week for the final time in the regular season, facing off against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (Angels Single-A). The Storm enters the contest looking to end a seven-game losing streak, with Jesus A. Castro set to make the start. It will be Castro’s fifth start against the Quakes this season. 

DSL Padres Gold (Won 5-3 vs DSL Giants Black) (1-0 in DSL Cup Semifinals) 

Dawry Guerrero – 2-for-4, Double, Single, Five RBI

Cristian Benavides – 2-for-3, Two Singles, Walk, Two Runs Scored

Yoandres Valdiviezo – 0.2 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 0 K

Wilfred Paca – 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K 

The Padres Gold are one step closer to returning to the DSL Cup Finals after a 5-3 win over Joniel Hernandez and the DSL Giants Black. Dawry Guerrero stole the show for the Padres Gold, as the 18-year old third baseman drove in all five of the Padre affiliate’s runs. Guerrero hit a two-run single in the second inning to tie the game at two. With the Padres Gold trailing 3-2, Guerrero stepped up with the bases loaded in the eighth. Guerrero pulled a double down the right field line to clear the bases, putting the Padres Gold ahead 5-3. Cristian Benavides scored two runs in the game, reaching base safely three times. Dayquer Alfonzo and Sebastian Nadales each scored a run, with Nadales drawing two walks in the win. Timothy Mogen had two singles in the game. 

Starting pitcher Yoandres Valdiviezo lasted just two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs. The right-hander walked his first batter before recording two flyouts. The 17-year old then walked four straight batters, with the final two walks each scoring one run. Manager Diego Cedeno had seen enough, going to the bullpen for right-hander Wilfred Paca. Paca got out of the jam and went on to pitch five innings of scoreless relief. Paca struck out three while walking one, picking up eight outs on the ground. He now has a 1.42 ERA in the DSL Cup playoffs. Jose Perez recorded the final out of the sixth and threw a scoreless seventh. The Padres Gold sent him back out for the eighth, but former teammate Joniel Hernandez launched a go-ahead solo home run, chasing Perez from the contest. Albert Perez recorded all three outs in the eighth inning, keeping the deficit at one. After the Padres Gold’s three-run rally, Albieris Polanco entered for the ninth. Polanco allowed a leadoff single to Diego Alambarrio, but got a flyout and two straight strikeouts to end the game and seal the Padres Gold comeback win. 

The Padres Gold are now one win away from the DSL Cup Finals, and will look to advance on Tuesday at the Giants’ complex.
