To close out their six-game road trip, the Padres fought valiantly but would drop their series finale against the Brewers.

Michael King took the mound for the Padres for his fourth start (fifth appearance) of the season, and against a lineup which had been on fire heading into the series,

King recorded a total of 10 strikeouts over 7.2 innings. It was a critical outing for King after his previous outing against the Dodgers, and he certainly had an outing more to his and the Padresā€™ liking. A notable stat is that King, through 4.1 innings, had five whiffs on his four-seamer, a number that matched the whiff total on his fastball in his first four starts, per the broadcast.

Offensively, the Padres had a more subdued outing early on against Brewers spot starter Bryse Wilson, putting up only two hits and a walk across Wilsonā€™s 3.2 innings. The Brewers’ pitching staff was excellent at getting ground balls from the Padresā€™ bats in this game early on as well, ending most scoring threats in the early part of the game.

King was matched by the tandem of Bryse Wilson and Bryan Hudson through five innings, with both pitching staffs being effective and efficient. Milwaukee turned to Elvis Peguero in the seventh inning, who was greeted by an opposite-field single by Manny Machado, which was followed up by a double play ball off the bat of Ha-Seong Kim. Jackson Merrill, batting out of the sixth spot, would then hit a two-out triple to bring the tying run to the plate, but Tyler Wade would fly out to end the inning.

King would return to the mound in the seventh, and with two outs, Willy Adames would poke a soft liner to right field, ending both a no-hit bid for King and a stretch of fifteen consecutive batters retired. The Brewers turned to Abner Uribe in the eighth, a day after having him throw 31 pitches in relief. Matthew Batten would greet the Brewers right-hander with a leadoff triple into the left-center field gap, and with two outs, Uribe would make a strong defensive play on a Fernando Tatis Jr dribbler to keep the run from scoring.

The eighth inning saw Michael King return to the mound, where Brice Turang hit a one-out single and stole second during the next at-bat, which resulted in a strikeout of Jackson Chourio, King’s tenth of the day. Mike Shildt would turn to Wandy Peralta to hold the game at zeros apiece. However, Blake Perkins would hit a grounder through the left side to score Turang, bringing across the first run of the game.

Milwaukee turned to Joel Payamps to close out the game, who would get ground ball outs off the bat of Jurickson Profar and Manny Machado. Ha-Seong Kim would hit a hard line drive to left-center… into the glove of Blake Perkins to finish a 1-0 victory for the Brewers.

Despite being saddled with the loss, Michael King posted a superb outing, one which bodes well for the rotation going forward.
