The Mexico national team opened the 2026 FIFA World Cup in euphoric fashion with a 2-0 win over South Africa. Tijuana Xolos’ young star Gilberto Mora did feature in this game and became one of the youngest players to ever play in a World Cup game.

Mora has been on several radars with his recent performances at Club Tijuana and was never in doubt to make this World Cup roster. The only doubt was whether he would be a starting player or how many minutes he would receive on the pitch.

Mexico manager Javier Aguirre did not start Mora in the opener against South Africa, but the young phenom did receive playing time. The 17-year-old midfielder replaced Alvaro Fidalgo in the 66th minute as Mexico extended its lead shortly after.

The Chiapas native became the sixth youngest player ever to feature in a World Cup. Mora was just shy of beating out the legendary Pele on the fifth spot.

South Africa was already down a man due to a red card by the time Mora stepped on the pitch. However, the visiting side was playing a very physical and aggressive game defensively.

Mora was pressed in his limited playing time as he tried to generate offensive play for El Tri. The teenager finished the game with 14 accurate passes from 14 attempts, a pair of recoveries, and a successful dribble attempt.

Mora did not have any shots in his 24 minutes on the pitch, but will surely continue to receive opportunities. Mexico came away with the 2-0 win, although team captain Cesar Montes did receive an unfortunate red card in the final minutes of the match.

It was not a perfect game for El Tri, but the objective was secured with a valuable three points from the clash. Julian Quinones scored and was clearly the best player on the field as he received Man of the Match honors.

Xolos recently extended Mora’s contract, although the young player is expected to reach Europe sometime next year. The 17-year-old is expected to play the entirety of next season in Tijuana in what has the potential to be a career-changing campaign.

This World Cup has the potential to garner even more interest for Mora from the European market. Overall, this was a positive initial showing, even if there was not much of an opportunity to fully showcase his attributes.

Mexico and Mora will now shift focus to the next game against South Korea, set to be played on Thursday, June 18, in Guadalajara.
