Dylan Coleman Is a Value Pick in Fourth Round for Padres
The San Diego Padres selected right-handed pitcher Dylan Coleman during the fourth round of the 2018 MLB First Year Player Draft.
They selected Coleman with the 111th pick in the 2018 draft and the team could get excellent value from him.
Coleman recently finished his third season with the Missouri State Bears.
In 2018, Coleman posted a 10-2 record and was a part of a team that won both the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title, and the MVC Tournament crown.
He recorded 129 strikeouts over 102.2 innings in 2018, earning him a first team All-MVC selection. The 21-year-old ranked 14th in the nation in strikeouts. His collegiate accolades include a Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger All-America selection in 2016.
Coleman was ranked as the No. 90 draft prospect. He has four pitches in his repertoire: fastball, changeup, slider and curveball. He throws his fastball in the 92-94 mph range, but has reached 98 mph, according to mlb.com. His slider sits in the 80-84 mph range.
Coleman recorded 317 strikeouts during his three seasons at Missouri State. Two Buffalo Wild Wings franchises in Springfield, Missouri, held a promotion during the season, where they offered one free wing to fans who attended home games for every strikeout thrown during each game. Coleman threw 126 strikeouts this past college season. That’s a lot of wings.
Take a look at some video of Coleman in action.
An mlb.com scouting report said that “Coleman lacks consistency, with the quality of his pitches and even more with his command, but when he’s on he can can display stuff worthy of a late first-round selection.” His delivery does not have a lot of moving parts, so that tells you with better teaching his command issues should resolve them self. He has plus stuff and that is what matters.
The scouting report also said that Coleman was a durable pitcher in college and will get the chance to develop into a starter in pro ball, but his ultimate role may be as a high-leverage reliever. He has upside. And that is what the Padres covet. Keep your eye on this young pitcher.
